Jillian Michaels Explains Pregnancy Misquote: Endometriosis

Jillian Michaels, who had been taking heat for saying that "pregnancy ruins your body," a comment that she says she never said or believes, was interviewed recently about the real reason she won't get pregnant: Endometriosis.
"I learned very early on that I have endometriosis and polycystic ovaries," Michaels said in an interview with Momlogic. "I was always told that fertility would/could be a problem for me."
She explained that the reporter for Women's Health magazine, which featured the interview with the misconstrued comments, started asking her about having kids at the end of a very long three-hour interview.
When asked about whether she wants kids, Michaels just skirted the issue, saying she couldn't handle doing that to her body and that she planned to adopt.
She told Momlogic that in order to have kids, she'd require surgery to treat the endometriosis, and it was in response to that -- not gaining a big pregnant body -- that she made the comment about not "handling doing that to my body."
Endometriosis is a condition of the endometrium, which lines your uterus. In this condition, the lining grows in other places as well, most often onto your fallopian tubes, ovaries, or the tissue lining your pelvis, according to the Mayo Clinic. The result leads to inflammation of the surrounding tissue, cysts, scar tissue, and adhesions, causing pain and also fertility problems.
Polycystic ovaries contain lots of small cysts that make it difficult to get pregnant.
"I don't feel that pregnancy ruins a body at all, and I was really upset that an entire community of women felt hurt by what I allegedly said," she continued in the Momlogic post. "So much has been misconstrued and taken out of context. I do expect that from the media, so I don't really care about that. But what I DO care about is moms. So if moms or women out there feel betrayed at all, that matters to me. Moms are incredibly important to me."

D said...I can understand where Jillian is coming from. I was diagnosed with severe endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome in college. They told me then that getting pregnant would be a slim to none chance for me. I held out hope, just praying, doing everything I could to ensure that one day I could have a child. I endured 7 surgeries to remove cysts that had grown to the sizes of lemons and softballs. I battled several infections that left me hospitalized. At 35, I had to make a very difficult decision...hysterectomy or severe illness which would put my life in danger. I looked into every option, including freezing my eggs. However, when they got in, everything was so diseased and infected they ended up doing an emergency hysterectomy. I know how painful and emotional exhausting her condition is. I understand the want to have a child and the inability to do so. I have a lot of respect for Jillian and she has inspired me in so many ways.

I wish there were trainers out there in the public eye that understood the plight of women that have had children and the challenges it presents. Beyond losing alot of weight, time, strength, and stretched skin and muscle are difficult to overcome!

Jayce said...I am 28 years old as was diagnosed with endometriosis AND polycystic ovaries three years ago. The doctors have told me that due to the number and size of cysts as well as the frequency of them on top of the endometriosis that getting pregnant would be extremely difficult for me. So, I, too, understand the difficulties facing women with these conditions and am proud of Ms. Michaels for her honesty regarding her condition.
Pregnancy on its own is a huge strain on the body, hence all the risks and precautions associated with it. To have to undergo treatments and procedures just to be able to even get pregnant is just that much more physical stress the body has to endure. And, healthy or not, your body is never the same afterwards (so my friends have told me.) So, I applaud her honesty. She didn't say pregnancy is bad or unnatural...she simply said it's not for her.
Good for you, Ms. Michaels. There are many mother-less children out there that could use your love and attention.

Andrea said...D - I went through the same exact scenario! I am 34 and just had my hysterectomy over chirstmas break at 33. I have been asking doctors to perform the hysterectomy since I was 25 years old, simply because dealing with the pain, hormonal imbalances and surgeries was intolerable. I have PCOS as well and they did not know about the endometriosis until they performed the hysterectomy, so when I found that out I knew I made the rigth decision. Other women think I am crazy to have had that surgery at such a young age and without trying to have a child; well, what they do not understand is everything we deal with. There is no menstrual regularity so you never really know when you are ovulating, the pain, the large chance of miscarriage, plus the chance of passing this genetic problem on to a daughter - I could never do that. It has given me and my family enough grief. I understand what Jillian was saying, assuming of course that is what she meant by her statement. I wouldnt (and now couldnt) do that to my body either - it just isnt worth it to me. I feel that there are enough "unwanted" kids out there that I could adopt, and I am okay with that.

Paula said...I was told and it did work that getting pregnant although difficult can be done will get rid of endrometriosis. It took me a long time a year and I got preg and then after I had my daughter they said I no longer had endrometriosis. I had a laparosopy and they looked inside and said the pregnancy did the trick. So somewhere there is misinformation on pregnancy and this disease. Getting pregnant is and was the best thing for my condition according to my ob/gyn and he was right. So Jillian might want to reexamine the real reason she does not want to get pregnant and not put it off on this disease because she sounds uneducated. Considering she promotes so much about the body and weight ect. She needs to be more honest for those of us who know the truth about having endrometriosis and getting pregnant. May be there is the fact u gain weight and get stretch marks. Hmmmm!!

Mary said...Frankly, after reading that Jillian Michaels will date men or womem it is obvious she is still confused at her age. She should put having children (adopting) on hold for now. Why have the children confused too? When adopted they do not have the option of rejecting selfish parents.

MomHadIt said...Wait a minute, Kagan has no spouse, so she's GAY. Jillian dates men & women and she's what? Anti-pregnancy? You can't judge one and not judge the other.
The media is sickening with all it's hype about what they want to do to make or break someone's career. Maybe she's really a man, and can't get pregnant. All that plastic surgery to look like she's the biggest winner, makes her look like the biggest loser to me.

Sheila said..."D" I could not have said it better. You and I have the exact story. Actually it was very strange reading it because even the time line is the same.
I am just wondering how your health is now? I seemed to go down hill after my hysterectomy. I am on cymbalta and premarin to get myself under control.
Let me know if you can.
Thank you,
Sheila

heather said...UM, Jillian Michaels is only famous because she helps people to lose weight the WRONG way! Someone read the article in people mgazine... she is a terrible person! I also have endometriosis and I have been told that pregnancy can actually HELP the condition. Yes, women with endometriosis may have trouble with fertility... but that does not mean that pregnancy ruins the body... it means that endo ruins the body!! Will someone tell this self-centered, egotistical biotch to shut up and get her facts straight before she tries to cover up a mess that she made? I can't stand this woman. Seriously, read he article about the Biggest Loser in People Magazine. You will hate her, too!!

LS said...Perhaps this will serve a lesson to reporters and bloggers alike - if there's a quote you don't understand, perhaps you should go back to the source and clarify before printing it and blowing it all out of proportion.
Oh, wait, what am I saying? That would require common sense, and we CAN'T have that!!!

Interviewers and writers often deliberately distort peoples' words and meanings because they know it'll draw attention to themselves. What's even worse, the average reader will 'skim' a story, read between the lines (exactly what the writer hopes they will do), and accept every word that's written as fact. Unless someone watches an interview and hears the words coming directly from the 'horse's mouth', I think it's a huge mistake to take anything you read as "fact".
