After months of health issues and hospitalization, Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar's 19th child, Josie Brooklyn, is finally going home from the hospital, People magazine reports.
Josie weighed just 1 lb. 6 oz. when she was born on Dec. 10 via emergency C-section at just 25 weeks. She then suffered a perforated bowel when she was eight days old.
The couple, stars of TLC's "19 Kids and Counting," took Josie home from the hospital on April 6, but then she was readmitted two days later.
This time, though, doctors have identified the source of her health issues.
"Her digestive issues have been linked to lactose intolerance," says her physician Dr. Robert Arrington, co-director of the neonatal intensive care unit at Arkansas Children's Hospital. "We are happy that she is doing so well and fully expect her to continue to thrive. Today, as she's leaving, she looks like a full-term baby."
The Duggars will live with Josie, who now weighs 7 lbs. 6 oz., in their Little Rock rental house until they are ready to take her home, probably in a few weeks, People reports.
"We're going to wait and see how it all goes," says Michelle. "We're going to take it easy and hang out close to the hospital."

Bonnie Pope said...absolutely. babies that premature don't have the basic chemistry to break down the complex proteins in most milk based formulas. Before this was identified, many preemies died from a multitude of complications, including enterocolitis, which baby Josie narrowly recovered from.

mei said...Not hardly. I have two sons that were born with it, full term babies that weighed in at almost 9 pounds. FYI, it is like an allergy, something that happens at times. By the time one of my sons was in his teens the problem cleared up but the other one, in his late 30s still has problems. I also have a child that was born when I was 6.5 months pregnant. (I am from the age that we figured months rather then weeks) and she was and is fine. Luck of the draw.

Mary Hopkins said...Yes it very well could be. I have a brother that was a preeme and when he was born the Dr. told my Mom not to give him milk so for the first three months I believe it was he live on coke cola, that was what they had her feed him. It turned out though after he weathered this he was the healthiest of us all. Didn't get sore throats, colds and flu like most kids. We would all be sick and he would be just fine. This was some fifty years ago though I am sure they feed them something else now.

Kim C. said...Nope! It's not a preemie thing. My son was born at 28 weeks & he has never had a problem with milk, dairy products or any foods. He also had expressed milk & milk based formula with no problems. Every preemie is different.

Lisa said...Yes "Glorious", when people don't have enough common sense on their own to stop after 19 kids, maybe that is what we need. No one needs or can adequately care for 19 kids.

Jenni said...What Lisa and JMaltus aren't taking into account is that the Duggars aren't hurting anyone, their kids are better behaved than any other children I've ever seen, they all help each other and love each other very much, and they are self-sufficient, i.e. not living off the government! It's nobody's business but theirs how many children they have, nor is it anyone else's business as to when they decide to stop having any. They consider each child a blessing, these are deeply religious and spiritual people. Now I certainly wouldn't choose to live the life they live, but I'm not about to pass judgment on them either, since NO ONE has the right to pass judgment on anyone else. Look to yourselves and your own lives before you throw stones at others, because I'm betting you've got plenty of cleanup to do in your own lives! JMHO, YMMV.

Val said...My youngest was on soy formula as an infant after regular milk based formula caused some problems. He tolerated milk products much better when he was about 13-14 months old.
I hope little Josie continues to improve and there are no permanent problems from her premature birth.

I am sorry that the mother and father have set such an inexcusable example for all their children. They contribute NOTHING except their combination dna which apparently, they believe is superior to others.
Imagine if even 20% of the families in the U.S. pulled this legal tax cheat, burden to others lifestyle.

Virginia said...Yes Duggars are paying the bill, house is paid and INSURANCE is paid by them. As far as taxes why should they have to pay tons of taxes like me and you to support the rest of Americas teens and future welfare population?? So far the daughters aren't getting knocked up and using the programs either. In essence their lifestyle and kids don't cost America ZIP. I was the oldest of six and had all the kids live 10 and I helped plenty with the younger kids and housework etc. It prepared me for motherhood and kept me from growing up an entitled self absorbed wonderful one like too many young people today!

If you study the facts this family pays its own way and does not depend upon the government for care which is more than half of our country does with food stamps and welfare. The only thing they are guilty of is loving children and taking care of them.
While we may not agree that this is what is best for all the children or for the mother's body, these people have not given anything but what they believe is love.
Personally, I don't believe this mother will last long depriving her body of nutrients like calicum and sleep having so many kids. Secondly as a retired teacher I know that you can not possible give all the attention that children need to be really nurtured in a group that size.
Thirdly just because these people want kids, it is not fair to the older kids to have to raise them and perhaps not get to do other personal interests just to "help out" because the parents don't know when to stop reproducing. Finally, has this father thought about how hard it would be on the mother if he were to die or vice-verse. That is a lot of responsibility to put on one parent without proper provision being made.

American4America said...How do you know what they pay in taxes? The Duggars are not on any social programs. They pay for their family. While my personal opinion is 19 kids is CRAZY, they have every right to grow their family as they see fit. This is America... Geez, who are you that you feel the right to determine how many kids someone can have?
