Massachusetts Elementary School to Distribute Condoms to Students
Filed under: In The News, Weird But True
Starting this fall, kindergarten through fifth grade students at Veterans Memorial Elementary School in Provincetown, Mass., will be able to obtain free condoms, ABC News reports.
Debate about the policy did not focus on whether condoms should be distributed at all, but rather on whether or not it was too restrictive.
"I don't like that students can't be discreet about this," says school committee member Shannon Patrick, the Provincetown Banner reports. "They have to go and ask for it. I'd rather them not have the conversation (with counselors) and have the condom than not have the condom."
Since there is no age restriction on obtaining condoms, some students need more information, school superintendent Dr. Beth Singer says.
"We're talking about younger kids," Singer says. "They have questions they need answered on how to use them, when to use them."
Not everyone agrees with the policy. Kris Mineau, president of the conservative Massachusetts Family Institute, says the policy is ridiculous, ABC News reports.

Can someone please enlighten me what a 5 year old is going to do with a condom other than filling it with water and throwing it at someone? Sounds like the parents of the educators should have used condoms!!!

michelle said...i understand the idea of trying to teach young people the importance of safe sex. if a young person is determined to be sexually active, the chances are they are already having sex without their parents knowing about it. but im talking about high school aged maybe middle school (maybe). these people want to give out condoms to elementary schoolers? its almost like "hello! is anybody home?" its an idea with good intentions, but its just stupid. an honest, good hearted, stupid idea. these kids are between the ages of 5 and 11. they are just now learning the formal names for their "tutus" or "dingdongs". yes some people mature a little earlier than others. i got my period for the first time in the fourth grade and i knew girls who had breasts at 10 years old larger than the ones i have now at 20. and i learned what sex was in the third grade from a girl who had asked her mom and told the rest of us in the girls bathroom after school. but i was never encouraged in any way shape or form to have sex, protected or otherwise. you want to give our free condoms? give them out to the horny high schoolers, not 6 year-olds.

Laura Burk said...As a pediatric nurse I am required by law to report any suspected abuse upon a child. Any child of elementary school age is way below the age of legal consent and a child of this age having sex is obviously a victim of some form of sexual abuse. Instead of the school providing condoms they need to provide legal help to have these children removed from the situation that is resulting in their need for condoms. It is not only a moral obligation that we do so, but also it is the LAW!!!

In that case you should report the entire Provincetown School Board for sexual abuse of children.

Seriously in kindergarten i thought girls had cutties and for a school to give them out .....WHAT IF THE CHILD IS BEING RAPED SERIOSLY and if they were nobody would know and for the school to contribute to this they become a giant part of the crime .. if i were to go to my school and ask for a condem my school would be smart and let the police and my PARENTS know......my parents gave birth to me they deserve to know everything and for you people and schools who agree with giving children condoms "you are retarded.......". Parents send there kids to school putting them in the schools hands trusting them and for this i would home school my child if i were a dad ..get real i hope this gets around so that those retarded peopple who agree with giving out condems get some brains and keep their children safe. Giving out condems to children makes kids very sick and makes them bad people and not respect their bodies

Laura Burk said...The school administration will be open to all kinds of litigation if they do not comply with laws that protect children from sexual exploitation. I myself am considering a suit on behalf of a child who ask for protection and has been violately raped repeatedly with full knowledge of "well meaning" adults. Children asking for information or exhibiting knowledge beyond their years concerning sex should always be taking seriously and reported to authorities ASAP!!

Hate to break it to everyone, but kids are having sex younger and younger and are going to do it with or without a condom or any type of protection. Schools get a double edged sword; when they want to have realistic sexual education, people freak out and say that the school has no business teaching children real knowledge about sex and where to obtain contraception, but when there's a spike in teen pregnancy, the parents say that the school isn't doing enough. Pick your poison: your kid having sex, but using protection or your kid having sex and getting pregnant or having an STD.

Our very young first and second graders know all the sex language, mimic humping each other, show their private parts, and joke about std's they don't even understand about. They are getting this all from. . . somewhere. They are exposed to way too much way too soon and are basically unsupervised. And they follow each other, they are so impressionable. they immitate their public 'south park' culture and adopt its behaviors. They don't seem to have much, if any, of an inner core of values or understanding about sexual behavior and love. So, I believe that, with the parent input missing for so many of them, yes, they will be sexually involved, use and misues condoms and do what their culture tells them at every turn and suffer the consequences. Informing them at every turn why it is a great idea to wait until they are adults and help them internalize this message would be a nice help. Arm them with good reasons to wait instead of condoms at 10.

Ashley said...What sane person gives condoms to a 5 year old? A child that age asking questions about sex deserves answers, but you don't hand them condoms. I am not opposed to this as an option for children in 5th grade, or maybe even 4th, since some children reach puberty quicker than others. But anything less than that is absolutely ridiculous and irresponsible as an educator.

Laura said...I think this is just insanity. When did it become the education systems responsibility to teach our kids about sex? Let alone distribute condoms? Are we all gone crazy???? Kindergarten? Come on....get a grip! Kids go to school to learn reading, writing, and arithmetic correct? When did it become the job of the schools to teach about sex and distribute condoms, especially K-5th grade? Insane...and anyone that supports this crap is insane too. Have you ever heard of phedophelia? Maybe the people that support this kind of stuff have fantasies about sex with children in the first place. Ridiculous is all I can say!!!! Leave the parenting of our children to the parents!

D said...Am I missing something???? Kindergarten to fifth graders???? Condoms???? First of all.... What 5 to 10 year old could keep a condom on his young self? Second of all....a 5 to 10 year old has not reached puberty and is incapable of producing sperm to create a baby. I think maybe it might be appropriate to start elementary information about sex to them; but CONDOMS????? This is totally out there !!!! Whoever came up with this idea; has something else on his/her mind besides educating these youngsters about sex. These children have absolutely no use for a condom, unless they rubberband them on their penises. How absurd !!!!
