Reviews: What's New This Week
Here is a look at what's new this week in family entertainment as adapted from reviews and ratings by Common Sense Media. Click on the links to read the reviews in full.
In Theaters: Grown Ups
Five friends reunite after the death of their beloved high school coach in "Grown Ups," a comedy about friendship, loss and aging. Despite the presence of wives and children, the film is all about the guys with plenty of sexual innuendo, adult language and drinking. Rated PG-13, iffy for kids 13-14
DVD: Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
An aged-up version version of the book of the same name, "Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" brings mythology to modern times. Action-packed and intense, the film is quite violent and features battle scenes with horrifying and potentially nightmare-inducing creatures. Rated PG, OK for kids 11+
TV: Sixteen Wishes
Disney cutie Debby Ryan stars in "Sixteen Wishes," a cautionary tale in which a young girl with mixed-up priorities learns to value what's really important in life. Wholesome and entirely family-friendly, the made-for-TV movie offers a teachable moment for impressionable tweens. Rated TV-G, OK for kids 8+
Books: Todd's TV
Parents who use television as an electronic babysitter may squirm a bit when reading "Todd's TV," a clever tale about a boy and his relationship with his television. Though the message may be aimed at parents, it's the child who eventually solves the problem of his family's television dependence. OK for kids 4+
Music: The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Soundtrack
Though the songs on this collection may be as dark as the movie, "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Soundtrack" is entirely appropriate for the film's young fans. Showcasing up-and-coming artists, the tracks feature clean lyrics and messages about love, independence and the importance of chasing your dreams. OK for kids 10+
Web: Wilson and Ditch
An educational site from PBS Kids, "Wilson and Ditch" offers visitors an informative and silly gopher-guided tour of the United States. Through videos, games, activities, downloads and podcasts, kids can learn about different cities as they join the "GoBros" on their extended road trip. OK for kids 7+
Games: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11
For Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11" is easy enough to to play, but has little to offer that's new. Players create an avatar, brush up on their skills and compete against the pros and each other. The open online play available in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions may not be appropriate for tweens. Rated E, OK for kids 7+
