Fruit Roll-Ups Sued Over Health Claims

Watch out, y'all -- the grocery store is a mighty dangerous place these days.
First, those naughty folks at Kellogg claimed they could keep the common cold away with a little snap, crackle and pop, and now Fruit Roll-Ups are out to get you -- at least, that's what one New York City woman claims.

In a class-action lawsuit she filed against General Mills, the maker of the popular kids' snacks, Payton McClure of Brooklyn, N.Y., says the company is fibbing when it claims the roll-ups, as well as Fruit by the Foot and Fruit Gushers, are low fat, naturally flavored and a good source of Vitamin C, according to the New York Daily News.
The $5 million lawsuit, which was filed June 22, alleges that General Mills fails to disclose on packaging that the snacks are also made with partially hydrogenated oil, which is "dangerous and unhealthy," the Daily News reports.
"Unfortunately for consumers and, including children, all these claims are false and misleading," the suit states.
General Mills is an umbrella for plenty of well-known food brands, including perennial parent favorite Cheerios, as well as Green Giant, Pillsbury and Haagen-Dazs. The fruit snacks are distributed under the Betty Crocker brand.

Bee said...Actually, it is important to list ALL the ingredients in a food product because we all have a right to know exactly what is going into our bodies and our childrens' bodies.
It is also important because many children have allergies to certain foods and substances and the parents need to know exactly what they are feeding their children.

Elisha said...I am SO sure that $5 Million will help her prove her point on the snack being "unhealthy". Why not just sue for them to change the label instead of suing for money. If it is on the shelf in a regular grocery store 9 times out of 10 it has additives! Get over it! Get past it! Move on! If you want "natural" fruit for your kids....Um...buy Fresh Fruit!

mom said...You know there is a very easy solution to this problem. If you dont want your kids to eat fruit roll ups DONT GIVE IT TO THEM!!!!!!!!! It is a simple as that. And get a life. Almost every product on the shelf has additives and dyes and chemicals to keep it "fresh" for a period of time or give it a shelf life. Stop trying to get rich by sueing big companies. If you are so worried about what your kids eat grow the food yourself!!!!! Why is everyone so busy trying to sue everyone and all these companies? In my opinion we have bigger things to worry about these days than fruit roll ups. We have had floods in Tenn., terrorists attacks, earthquakes, murders, rapes, and all some lazy lame woman can think of is using then court system and taxpayer money to sue over fruit roll ups. Does anyone else see anything wrong with this picture? GROW UP AND STOP BEING A CRYBABY ABOUT A SNACK. It is not meant to be a source of nutrition for the kid it is a snack and as far as snacks go it is better than a candy bar!!!!!!

Are people like this in foreign countries as well? Do they sue someone for a lable or a too hot cup of coffee? Or a zipper pinched someone trying to fit into a too small piece of clothing?? Pah-leeeeze. The people that allow this kind of thing need to make some major changes. A lot of this is brought on by money hungry attorneys. I would hope the judge would laugh them right out of the court room.

I just dont understand one thing, we worry about cigarette smoke and trans fats, and sodium but no one seems to care if you or your neighbors are putting all the pesticides and killers on your lawns that you walk in and it gets in the air you breath. I think breathing in that would do more damage than eating a fruit rollup

Debster said...Oh gee, let's take to court companies that make PopTarts, all those sugary cereals and even oatmeal filled with sweet flavoring.
While we're at it, let's take sugar to court for being sugar!
Me, I raised five kids who were rarely given these processed items.
They were lucky to get fast food once every two weeks or more. They were raised on whole foods and meals made the old fashioned way. Yeah, stuff like pot roast and baked chicken, homemade applesauce, real potatoes and veggies. And no, I'm not 70 years old!
Something crazy happened 30 years ago where parents thought it was okay to sit a kid down to eat a fat and starch laden bowl of Kraft macaroni and cheese. Or Spaghettios (ugh). They were too lazy to make their kids real, nutritious meals.
My kids never suffered in that respect. And they are all healthy, proper weight for their ages. There isn't a fat, lethargic sugar junkie in the house.
Sue over fruit rollups? She's crazy. I hope the lawsuit getslaughed at and booted right out of court. Manufacturers have the right to market unhealthy food products. It's up to US as parents to simply say "No thank you" as we cruise those grocery store aisles.
This is just plain ridiculous.

But given moderately there is nothing wrong with snack foods. Make sure that your child is eating a balanced diet, is exercising properly, and understands when to stop eating, and there is nothing to worry about. I assure you, only idiots are feeding their child three fruit roll ups a day to hit the fruit intake goal.

I believe some people just look for a way to sue a company. Sad very sad because responsible adults have to pay for it. Roll Ups as a treat once in a while. Try real fruit it actually tast good and has juice that runs down your face. O! I forgot and Fast food is not healthy and again maybe as a treat once a week maybe. So if your brat gets fat from eating to much junk food. YOU should be the one that gets locked up for child abuse.

Someone do us a favor and shove some down her throat and choke her. At the same time, could someone drown the Yoo-Hoo fool in a vat of Yoo-Hoo?

Cheryl said...Just within the last 2 days there was an article stating that these products contain food dyes that are KNOWN to cause cancer and still are being put into fruit snacks and fruit "leather" (especially Red #3), assuming that is fruit roll-ups. So on top of the other unhealthy things in this stuff, it's not a good choice for kids. It's just candy with them putting the word "fruit" on it. The lawsuit has merit but they should also include the carcinogenic food dyes that are being pushed on our kids and grandkids under the guise of being "healthy". And down the road when the cancers start showing up (if people haven't already noticed hyperactivity, etc. in their kids), people will be scratching their heads wondering what caused it. The FDA does not appear to protect the people.

Parents look for any and everything to blame but themselves when something is wrong with their child. These "lawsuits" against these large corporations are nothing more than attention seeking activist trying to regulate what a parent should give and not give. Fruit Rollups arent a bad thing if its a once in a while kind of thing but if your basing your child's diet around it, then obviously there is an issue. Instead of suing these corporations sue these parents that let their child's diet and health fail because they feed them all the junk they want. Oh wait, that seems like the bulk of activist today.
