There are several companies that can scan your old film negatives, printed photos and even home movies. And trust me, you don't want to be scanning printed photos at home w/your printer/scanner/fax combo machine.
Like any task/chore, it's best to break it up into manageable chunks. Spend an hour or 30 mins going through one set of photos and figuring out which images from that set you want to get scanned and put the negatives or printed photos into a labeled envelope.
I'm currently using 3 companies: Digital Pickle, ScanDigital and ScanCafe for handling all of our old negatives, prints and super 8mm home movies.
