Welcome Tenley, Harper, Castiel and Bentley: The Hottest Baby Names of 2010
Filed under: Babies, In The News, Baby Names, Research Reveals: Babies, New In Pop Culture
With half of the year behind us, it's time to check in with our friends at BabyNameWizard.com for a baby name trend report. We know that Jacob and Isabella are the reigning king and queen of American baby names. But what's coming up next?
To answer that question, BabyNameWizard.com tracked the names that hundreds of thousands of name-searching parents looked for most. They've given us an exclusive peek at the hottest names of 2010 so far -- the names that rose the fastest from a year ago. The fast risers might not be common now, but we're likely to hear more from them in the years to come.
The #1 fastest rising girl's name is Tenley, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Kinley, Tinsley and Kinsley also made the top 20. Together, they point to a signature sound for the year's baby girls. Also keep an eye out for Everly, which placed two different spellings in the top 20.
For boys, the country's love affair with "-n" names is set to continue. More than half of the hottest rising boy's names end in that super-popular letter. Look for a fresh crop of surname names, too, especially luxurious ones like Sterling, St. John and Bentley.
The top 20 fastest rising boy's and girl's names are below. If you're afraid that your favorite names are rising too fast, check out the list of secret hit baby names that are more popular than they appear, and these appealing alternatives to the new hit names.

Laila said...I think that it's so funny that Ever made the list. My 3 month daughter is Ever Marianette and I never thought in a million years that it would make the list! I'm happy my son's names Julian Lorenz and Loren Rainier didn't make the list! P.S. My husbands name is Lorenzo thats where Loren and Lorenz came from! And I adore Lux and Tenely but no more babies for me.

Nicole said...I was thinking the Navi was coming more from people who had seen Avatar, who are also obviously people who have never played Zelda. No self-respecting Zelda fan would name their kid after that effing fairy... >_

luv2sing5801 said...Hahaha Navi was terrible =P I love those Zelda games though.
What's weird to me is that there are so many names on this list that I have never heard of, and hardly any I know how to pronounce. Although this kinda is good since I, for example, know 5 Jessica's =P

Penny Loken-Evans said...Lux reminds me of an old dish washing detergent(?), Eoin is too close to groin, kids will have a blast with this on the playground, as well as Sookie. Bently seems like a "wish I had the car but can't afford it name" and Ever just doesn't roll of the tongue. I'm a bit suprised Brighton didn't make the list. The thing about names is you want a name that's perfect but you have to remember these names go to school, play, will eventually graduate from college and enter the workplace. Different is good but it can also be ridiculous. By the way worst name in my opinion Seagrim 7, it's the alcohol of choice the couple drank the night of conception. I'm a labor/delivery nurse and some of the names just make you cringe. I'm 32

Michelle Kee said...You are pronouncing Eion wrong. It is pronouced like Ian which phonectically is Eon. There is a well known writter out there who's name is Eion. He wrote the children's books "Artemis Fowl" and the new sequecial to "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".

mrs.mulvaney said..."Eoin is close to groin"? It's a classic Irish name! It's pronounced similarly to "Owen" I wonder what you would have to say about Aoife, Sioban, Ronan or Donal? All as common in Western Europe as Ashley, Jessica or Christopher in the US.

Mary said...Right on, Penny. I am now 70 years old, and I didn't find out until I was 18 that my nickname, "Baby Gilbey," came from Gilbey's gin. I am relieved that they weren't drinking Absinth Frappes at the time.

Dee said...I like your thinking. Pick NOT a name that is popular and sounds good on a 4 year old. Think down the line. I went to high school with some individuals whose parents either didn't think when they named their child or were really cruel. Either way they endured a lot of hardship.
