Welcome Tenley, Harper, Castiel and Bentley: The Hottest Baby Names of 2010
Filed under: Babies, In The News, Baby Names, Research Reveals: Babies, New In Pop Culture
With half of the year behind us, it's time to check in with our friends at BabyNameWizard.com for a baby name trend report. We know that Jacob and Isabella are the reigning king and queen of American baby names. But what's coming up next?
To answer that question, BabyNameWizard.com tracked the names that hundreds of thousands of name-searching parents looked for most. They've given us an exclusive peek at the hottest names of 2010 so far -- the names that rose the fastest from a year ago. The fast risers might not be common now, but we're likely to hear more from them in the years to come.
The #1 fastest rising girl's name is Tenley, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Kinley, Tinsley and Kinsley also made the top 20. Together, they point to a signature sound for the year's baby girls. Also keep an eye out for Everly, which placed two different spellings in the top 20.
For boys, the country's love affair with "-n" names is set to continue. More than half of the hottest rising boy's names end in that super-popular letter. Look for a fresh crop of surname names, too, especially luxurious ones like Sterling, St. John and Bentley.
The top 20 fastest rising boy's and girl's names are below. If you're afraid that your favorite names are rising too fast, check out the list of secret hit baby names that are more popular than they appear, and these appealing alternatives to the new hit names.

Alexa said...yeah like hannah said those are really not unique names. They are really nice names but not unique. I'm 14 and I like the names Stella, Grace, Alexa (which is my name), Mia, and the only name I actually like on the girl list, Charlotte. But for boys names I like Nicholas, Anthony, Jakob (but only with a k), and again the only name on the guys list, Eliah. The names on the two lists are older names they are really not new. But I personally like older names though.

Jason Smith said...I think what the other meant when she was saying that there are more surnames being used is that names that are usually used as last names (such as St.John) are being chosen as first names for boys.

Kathleen Vaughan said...Sookie? Sounds like something you'd name a pet, or a cow. Puhlease!! Everly is an old name, I knew someone that had that name, and if she were alive today, she would be in her late sixties. There are so many beautiful names available that are not outrageous, why on earth do people come up with these crazy concocted names, is beyond me.

Kathleen Vaughan said...I forgot to mention, on some of these names that are given to girls, they are masculine sounding, so you are condemning your child to forever having to clarify whether they are male or female. Would you really want to do that? Think, new parents, think!!

Rhonda said...No name is a stupid name. Parents spend hours on trying to think of the perfect name. Some names may reflect some family history or a special place the parents visited. My grandaughters name is Lily and I think my daughter and son-in-law done a great job picking out her name.

Natasha P-M said...No name is a stupid name?? I DISAGREE! Potential name I heard recently: ABCDE pronounced: Ab-Si-Dee. Now the pronunciation of the name isn't bad sounding, but the spelling! Talk about getting picked on! Thank goodness the woman (really a girl! ) didn't use it!! BY THE WAY: the reason she considered it was "nobody will ever mis-spell the child's name!"

Penny Loken-Evans said...Eion is phonetically pronounced Ian, I get it but kids of a certain age will see it in black and white and get the giggles because it looks like groin. Sorry guys, if you're drawn to the name Ian, and I love it, I'd choose the less toxic way of spelling it. kids can twist things and poke fun at the Eion spelling and anyone who doesn't think so doesn't hang out with kids much..and yes, they have kid humor. when you have a kid, think back to when you were in school and all the different rhymes you made up. Today there's a veritable smorgasborg of names that are just people not really thinking long term impact. Artsy is great for a wall hanging, not for a child.

Lisa said...Oh, dear heavens, what has the world come to? It's not about giving your child a good, honest name anymore, is it? NOOO, you parents want to be UNIQUE. You want people to see your kid's name and think, "Wow! The parent is really creative!". Listen, it's not working. These names sound like a phonebook for some far of galaxy! Granted, some of these names are very nice, true blue names (i.e Charlotte, Ursula), but for every good name out there, there are 20 terrible ones. I especially feel sorry for they boys who have to wear any of these names. It'll only make school that much harder, because boys tend to get made fun of more for their names than girls do. And do you even think about their future? What if your little girl becomes a lawyer. Do you think a client will want to be represented by a Maria, or a Sookie?

Wendy said...Seems to me the parents that are coming up with these names are "readers". As the following names are characters in currently popular books :: Ever, Sookie, Harper, Kinsley, Tinsley. Those are just a few that I recognize. Same with the list of boys names. Reminds me of the old Johnny Cash song " A Boy Named Sue". lol
