Drunken Baby Photos? Not So Funny

I'll admit, when I first came upon this article from The Stir about chocolatiere Lunivers de Chocolat's drunken baby ad campaign for their whisky-filled chocolates, I wasn't immediately irritated. As an urban mom of two teenagers, who actually ask me to hang out with them and their friends sometimes, I like to think I'm cool and hip to modern culture. I wear Converse and rarely tuck my shirts.
So, when I read the bit about how there are three types of parents: "The ones who think it's hilarious to have baby pose with a beer bottle for a photo, the ones who have photos where baby looks drunk and they play that up, and the ones who think the other two types are borderline bad parents. (Read: Have no sense of humor.)" -- I naturally assumed I would never be the type who has no sense of humor.
So why am I feeling so uneasy about these photos?
Simple. I've seen those looks before on my own baby. Granted, she was 17 at the time, and not a toddler -- but, honestly, that makes no difference. Three weeks before my daughter headed off to college, I got a call that she was stinking drunk.

I jumped in my car, drove the mile or two to reach her, and was greeted by the sight of two girls and one random man carrying my daughter. They unloaded her onto the sidewalk, where she lay, half-conscious, perpetually throwing up.
I dialed 911 for an ambulance, then tried to make her talk to me. At the hospital, they put her on multiple bags of intravenous fluids and catheterized her. Five hours later, they gave her medication to help her stop throwing up so we could take her home.
This may sound new-agey, but my sense is that she was lucky this happened to her right before she went away to college, where she could have suffered a far worse fate had this happened amongst strangers or at a wild party.
Sure, this is my family's story, but before you sit back and say "it'll never happen to my child," think again.

Here are some pretty jarring statistics about adolescents, aged 12 to 17, from the National Center for Health Statistics:
- 16 percent had their first alcoholic drink before age 13
- 39 percent had at least one drink of alcohol in their lifetime
- 21 percent had at least one drink of alcohol during the 30 days before the survey
- 37 percent of those who drank in the past 30 days reported drinking on three or more days during that period
- 10 percent had five or more drinks of alcohol within a couple of hours -- binge drinking -- on at least one day during the past month
- 3 percent had five or more drinks of alcohol in a row on three or more days in the past month

So, Lunivers, sorry if I don't think your ads are funny. Maybe it's an American thing, considering that the ad campaign won a prestigious Gold Lion award at the 2010 Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.
Or, maybe it's because alcohol abuse in kids just isn't funny.

Andy said...I am still sitting here giggling over these cute pictures of these kids who are obviously really tired or just woke up and think it is a very cute way to advertise the whisky choc. Now, it they were really making the babies drunk then of course there would be an issue but can you parents just take a deep breath and get over such a silly issue.

Pam said...You don't get it, it doesn't matter if the "kids" don't know about the alcohol, I do. It is very offensive....you must not have children, or have respect for them. The innocence of children is always being undermined by the world today; this is one more dismal attempt for someone to make a buck at the expense of our standards. You may think me as an over-reactive person, but these things don't erode all at once, but a bit at a time......They should really use some creativity and not the cheap shot to peddle their wares. How simple-minded!!!!

Sammy said...@ Dayton: You say, "and they're probably not even drunk."??? Really? Wow. Of course they're not drunk; they're babies! You think this company fed babies alcohol for these ads? Of course not! How retarded are you? They are just silly pictures of sleepy babies, some of them with their hair purposely messed up, I'm sure, as a method of funny advertising.

samantha Withrow said...No, they don't know they are alcoholic.. but what kind of example does that set for the rest of the children that do know they contain alcohol? Very disgraceful.

DaveNH said...Give me a break folks - lighten up!!! This is very funny and since there is no claim that some idiot actually got their kid drunk, how about learning to laugh. Americans are so obsessed with such nonsense regarding children yet they refuse to address real issues like parenting and park their kids in front of the TV or gaming device .....

Megan said...i can see where the author of this article would be upset, but I also think we are pushing this jump from one to the other a little hard. While the ads might not be in good taste, at least the kids aren't really drunk.
I think we all need to take a step back and try to see it from someone else's POV. It could be worse, but its not the best idea either.

SKL said...There are so many things wrong with this article, I don't know where to begin.
There is nothing wrong with involving a baby in a joke about a legal act/substance that is not dangerous to said baby.
An ad about chocolates with alcohol in them is not going to make teens get drunk! Do you really think they start drinking so they can look like the babies in those pictures?
Do you believe in banning all ads for alcohol, including beer? Because I'll bet the beer ads inspire more teen drinking than chocolate ads ever could.
There is nothing wrong with a young person having experience with drinking a little alcohol. It is better to expose your child to alcohol in a mature way than to hope no "bad influences" come along and corrupt your innocent little girl. So most of your "scary statistics" are not alarming at all. I drank alcohol occasionally (and legally) before I was 10, but I have never been drunk in my life, and now I'm a teetotaler. Go figure.
My preschooler gets drunk regularly - on mango juice - and it's hilarious to me. Check back with me in 15 years and I'll let you know if my joking about it has turned her into a teen alcoholic.

Katie said...For God's Sake Brenda, GET A LIFE!! These babies are sleepy, not drunk! No, I don't think it's appropriate to insinuate that they are drunk, but that's all it is....an insinuaton!
Don't get on your high horse about SKL's post about her baby getting "drunk"on mango juice. If mango juice was harmful in any way, it would be legally bound to be labeled as so. SKL's child might be a little like my child, he gets crazy when he drinks mango juice or eats raw mango! It's something about the sugars and genetic make-up of mangos. Most people's bodies don't react to mango's, but some do! It's almost like a stimulant to my son and he doesn't have mango juice very often at all!
So, while I think the advertisement is in poor taste, it shouldn't be fodder for those of you in the moral majority cult!

CPS is going to get off the phone with you and laugh their butts off at you. Your accusation is rediculous. I bet your own kids are going to grow up and resent you. (if you have any) You must be a whoot at parties assuming you have any friends at all.

Mary Fleming said...I've seen this look on all my g-children when babysitting them while their parents are at work/ school. I think these pics are really cute but not particularly appropriate for what is being advertised. I realize most things advertised are advertised with sex in some way so at least that aspect is not in use. Still, I think the ad men/women could have come up with a better idea.

Kate said...To the author of this article: What happened to your daughter was terrible. And I hope she is better from the experience and that maybe she learned a lesson from it!
However, to link this silly ad campaign to what happened to your daughter is a BIG stretch. I have a young daughter. I hope and pray that she makes it through her youth unaffected by alcohol & drugs. I will do my best (like I am sure you do) to teach her properly and protect her from peer influence. BUT I ask, what does an ad campaign directed at adults who buy expensive, luxury chocolates have to do with teenage alcoholism/abuse?!?!? The scenario that has happened in your family has gravitas, but you cannot allow it to affect your ability to let other people live their own lives (when it is not hurting others). Your efforts might be better directed at involving yourself with an alcohol awareness campaign!
The ads are not in great taste. Silly, somewhat funny. But offensive only to people who have no sense! Clearly (and hopefully) the company did not really make these babies get drunk for the photo shoots! Everyone can relate to the look on these babies faces (if they have had children of their own)! It's meant to appeal to upscale, young and modern parents with disposable income. If it attracts young teenagers to drink - then so can babysitting!!!!
To propose that someone might be influenced by this ad to get their baby or child drunk for real, takes the same kind of idiot mentality to actually do such a thing! These type of individuals are going to be inspired by ANYTHING - more than likely their own family members or partners who are drunk or drugged up themselves. Their ability to have, much less raise children should already be in question and trust me, it will come to light in some other way regardless!
So please, do us all a favor and involve yourself in a political action committee to prevent youth alcoholism and leave trivial (albeit mundane) advertising alone!
[And no, I am not an advertiser or related to one. I am a suburban mom who lives in the conservative South]!

rjd_2630 said...I do take it that you do know one drink of any alcohol will make you drunk no matter what it is you drink, because most people will not stop at one drink, that is why our DUI and DWI is so high in this country. It is people like you that think that it is okay for a teenager to have a drink, however if you had parents that are or were alcoholics then you know that the chance of you becoming an alcoholic is higher than most. So to show babies with candy that has alcohol in it is very offending.
