Drunken Baby Photos? Not So Funny

I'll admit, when I first came upon this article from The Stir about chocolatiere Lunivers de Chocolat's drunken baby ad campaign for their whisky-filled chocolates, I wasn't immediately irritated. As an urban mom of two teenagers, who actually ask me to hang out with them and their friends sometimes, I like to think I'm cool and hip to modern culture. I wear Converse and rarely tuck my shirts.
So, when I read the bit about how there are three types of parents: "The ones who think it's hilarious to have baby pose with a beer bottle for a photo, the ones who have photos where baby looks drunk and they play that up, and the ones who think the other two types are borderline bad parents. (Read: Have no sense of humor.)" -- I naturally assumed I would never be the type who has no sense of humor.
So why am I feeling so uneasy about these photos?
Simple. I've seen those looks before on my own baby. Granted, she was 17 at the time, and not a toddler -- but, honestly, that makes no difference. Three weeks before my daughter headed off to college, I got a call that she was stinking drunk.

I jumped in my car, drove the mile or two to reach her, and was greeted by the sight of two girls and one random man carrying my daughter. They unloaded her onto the sidewalk, where she lay, half-conscious, perpetually throwing up.
I dialed 911 for an ambulance, then tried to make her talk to me. At the hospital, they put her on multiple bags of intravenous fluids and catheterized her. Five hours later, they gave her medication to help her stop throwing up so we could take her home.
This may sound new-agey, but my sense is that she was lucky this happened to her right before she went away to college, where she could have suffered a far worse fate had this happened amongst strangers or at a wild party.
Sure, this is my family's story, but before you sit back and say "it'll never happen to my child," think again.

Here are some pretty jarring statistics about adolescents, aged 12 to 17, from the National Center for Health Statistics:
- 16 percent had their first alcoholic drink before age 13
- 39 percent had at least one drink of alcohol in their lifetime
- 21 percent had at least one drink of alcohol during the 30 days before the survey
- 37 percent of those who drank in the past 30 days reported drinking on three or more days during that period
- 10 percent had five or more drinks of alcohol within a couple of hours -- binge drinking -- on at least one day during the past month
- 3 percent had five or more drinks of alcohol in a row on three or more days in the past month

So, Lunivers, sorry if I don't think your ads are funny. Maybe it's an American thing, considering that the ad campaign won a prestigious Gold Lion award at the 2010 Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.
Or, maybe it's because alcohol abuse in kids just isn't funny.

It is about finding humor in a child's being harmed or being portrayed as being harmed. Because a drunken child is a harmed child. How can anyone condone laughter based on an image of a harmed child?

If the theme here was "Babies trying to stay awake after playing hard all day" We'd all be remembering when our children at one time or another looked just like some of those pictures. I find no humor in this at all. I especially do not like the inference of the combination of babies and alcohol. In the real world babies get abused. Can you imagine some copycat fool saying " you think THOSE babies look goofy, look at these!!!" The things people will do for attention is scary. Pleaes do not point these fools in the direction of innocent, helpless babies! No there can be no good that would come out of this kind of thing. Just another push of the envelope. HL

Jomamma said...We have all seen our babies look like this when they fall asleep eating or are about to fall asleep playing, but the fact that the ad is for alcohol makes it appear the children are drunk and that is not cute or funny!!!

I was the single most driving force in my kids life. I was the stronger influence in their lives. I always had time to talk to them about everything even between long hours on my job or in some cases 2 jobs. PARENTS STOP LOOKING FOR OTHERS TO BLAME FOR YOUR BAD PARENTING SKILLS. Stop trying to be your child's friend and start being their parent. Then you can start seeing humor in articles like this. Excuses are killing this country.

I am a drug and alcohol counselor and I work with kids on a regular basis, the biggest problem.....I never meet any parents, and they wonder whats wrong with their kids. Take responsibility for your children, pay attention to your children, and stop trying to pass the blame on silly ads, music, or tv.

MysterySurrounds said...These pics look like several that I have on my own computer of my OWN 3 children. My mother in law is terrible when it comes to taking pictures and quite a few of hers have turned out like this! I think that they are funny and cute but wouldn't sell them out to some marketing company to used in this manner. I also have those previously mentioned pics where the child has a beer bottle in the picture however they were NEVER allowed to actually drink from it. My second child was a breastfed only baby for almost a year and at the time of a relative's graduation party when she was about 7 months old there were some relatives who were imbibing and she happened to look at a bottle sitting on the table near where we were sitting and her eyes lit up like the fourth of july and she reached for it like she was about to take a big swig and someone snapped a pic like that because it was FUNNY not because I was about to let her drink a beer. I doubt at 7 months of age having had only a breast to drink from prior to that point that she would have even known what to do with the bottle had she been allowed to get a hold of it anyway! These people need to lighten up and get their panties untwisted, I highly doubt those children were given the damn chocolates that their parents were paid for them to advertise anyway!

I think these pictures look like some I have of my kids as well. I don't think it's funny that they are using these pictures to advertise chocolat. That just seems morally wrong. That has to be the most horrible marketing idea in the world. No, these pictures are not funny to me at all. The ones of my kids are not funny to me either. I throw those away!
My mom used to buy me alcohol when I was a minor. She was the "cool" mom. It didn't have any affect on my adult life. People are just using that shit for an excuse. Ya there is statistics out there.. but really?
IT IS CALLED CHOICE!!
These pictures look horrible and this advertisement is wrong on so many levels. People need to be focusing on these kids that are commiting crimes and being trialed as MINORS!

They look just like they are not quite awake yet. I'm with totrodder, and lisa on this. I just Pray someone doesn't call CPS. In my state,(that would be Florida) things like this cause absolute family destruction when whining bitches stick their nose where it shouldn't be.

They are just annoying photos of tuckered out, half asleep babies.
If your coworkers showed you pictures of their kid looking like this,, you would be bored to tears.
Give it a rest people.

Marye said...This is not offensive. These babies are actually NOT drunk. I keep reading comments about how it's not funny to portray babies as drunk, but folks, THEY'RE NOT! Someone took innocent pictures and made a joke out of them, which I believe has been happening to pictures of babies, kids, adults, dogs, horses, all other animals, AND inanimate objects for years!!! Get over yourselves, please, and worry about something that is actually worth getting offended by, like maybe how America is so damn sensitive. Learn to laugh. It's not that funny when someone slips and falls on ice, cause they could've broken their hip or leg or cracked their skull open, but you know what? IT IS FUNNY!!!! Laugh first, then when there's cause for concern, be concerned! Are these ads for a chocolate that I personally have never heard of affecting your life? I doubt it.

No one was hurt making these adds, it's just a cute way to emphasise the product. Please don't tell me I'm the only parent who has seen her two year old trying her hardest not to fall asleep and thought "Wow she look drunk". Wobbling, rolling around on her bed, one eye open the other fluttering shut. It's adorable, and it makes me giggle!
For the record I have never been drunk, and don't have a drop of alcohol in my house... And still find this cute.
