Drunken Baby Photos? Not So Funny

I'll admit, when I first came upon this article from The Stir about chocolatiere Lunivers de Chocolat's drunken baby ad campaign for their whisky-filled chocolates, I wasn't immediately irritated. As an urban mom of two teenagers, who actually ask me to hang out with them and their friends sometimes, I like to think I'm cool and hip to modern culture. I wear Converse and rarely tuck my shirts.
So, when I read the bit about how there are three types of parents: "The ones who think it's hilarious to have baby pose with a beer bottle for a photo, the ones who have photos where baby looks drunk and they play that up, and the ones who think the other two types are borderline bad parents. (Read: Have no sense of humor.)" -- I naturally assumed I would never be the type who has no sense of humor.
So why am I feeling so uneasy about these photos?
Simple. I've seen those looks before on my own baby. Granted, she was 17 at the time, and not a toddler -- but, honestly, that makes no difference. Three weeks before my daughter headed off to college, I got a call that she was stinking drunk.

I jumped in my car, drove the mile or two to reach her, and was greeted by the sight of two girls and one random man carrying my daughter. They unloaded her onto the sidewalk, where she lay, half-conscious, perpetually throwing up.
I dialed 911 for an ambulance, then tried to make her talk to me. At the hospital, they put her on multiple bags of intravenous fluids and catheterized her. Five hours later, they gave her medication to help her stop throwing up so we could take her home.
This may sound new-agey, but my sense is that she was lucky this happened to her right before she went away to college, where she could have suffered a far worse fate had this happened amongst strangers or at a wild party.
Sure, this is my family's story, but before you sit back and say "it'll never happen to my child," think again.

Here are some pretty jarring statistics about adolescents, aged 12 to 17, from the National Center for Health Statistics:
- 16 percent had their first alcoholic drink before age 13
- 39 percent had at least one drink of alcohol in their lifetime
- 21 percent had at least one drink of alcohol during the 30 days before the survey
- 37 percent of those who drank in the past 30 days reported drinking on three or more days during that period
- 10 percent had five or more drinks of alcohol within a couple of hours -- binge drinking -- on at least one day during the past month
- 3 percent had five or more drinks of alcohol in a row on three or more days in the past month

So, Lunivers, sorry if I don't think your ads are funny. Maybe it's an American thing, considering that the ad campaign won a prestigious Gold Lion award at the 2010 Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.
Or, maybe it's because alcohol abuse in kids just isn't funny.

Stella said...I think most of the posters here are not understanding the point of the writer of the article. No where does she insinuate that these children are actually drunk. Of course they are just pictures of them either sleepy or what ever. Anyone with a pulse knows that these kids aren't really eating the chocolates or drinking. It's the way that the company is promoting their alcoholic product by using children in the ad. It's not funny because children and alcohol don't go together and for a company to do this especially in a world where so many underage people drink isn't the brightest choice. It's not THAT bad though compared to if it was a company promoting whiskey alone, that would be worse. So the moral of the story here is that most people think it is okay to show this ad because we all know the babies aren't drunk? What if little babies were posed in provactive clothing holding cigarettes? We all know that it isn't real but the question is....is it right?

No doubt your lackadaisical parenting led her to believe that drinking that much is even remotely acceptable. This may be news to you, but people can advertise how they want within the limitation of the law. There is nothing illegal about this. If you don't like it look at something else. The world is not out to please every person in it.

MELODYMUSIC1118 said...I don't hear any complaints about the talking babies for an online wall streeet trading company. So if babies can be used in advertising why not these ads? They are obviously sleepy babies and not drunk. You'd have to be an idiot to think they are drunk. If your baby would make a crap load of money to pose for a picture or just be filmed cause they are cute don't tell me 99.9% of you wouldn't do it. It's great that one can be holier than thou behind a computer.

Jamie said...So, from what I could glean from this rambling parody of an article, the author was offended by the pictures because her own daughter has a drinking problem? Perhaps she should spend less time complaining about adds and more time teaching her own children to abstain from alcohol until they are old enough and responsible enough to handle it. When describing the "3 types of parents" she left out the ones who are so obsessed with complaining and thrusting their opinions on the world that they completely fail at raising their own children.

Brenda said...I get the point....Im not "offended" but I DO THINK it very tastless and a sign of just how twisted the world has become. Why would you think it funny or cute to "portray" a baby as being intoxicated? How is the image of a "drunk baby" funny OR cute in your mind? Alcohol is an adult form of entertainment. Children have NO PLACE in the world of alcohol. What if this were marijuana brownies and the babies looked all red eyed and high? What about portraying the infant in a sexual manner.....same thing isnt it? Adult situations are adult situations right? Still think its funny? If you can find humor in the "portrayed drunkness" of an infant...you DEFINATELY have a serious problem and SHOULD seek some form of help. You obviously DONT KNOW where to draw the line.
People have no morals anymore. These babies are NOT being portrayed as being SLEEPY...they are being portrayed as DRUNK...very big difference! The JOKE is not funny...it's sick. Idiots!

Jordan said...There's nothing offensive about this. These babies are not actually drunk and these ads are not advertising alcohol. People need to stop searching for reasons to 'feel offended' and just enjoy their lives. I can't imagine the amount of time and energy that some people waste 'feeling offended'. That time would be better spent enjoying your life and family. Grow up people!

Angiebaby said...The middle one and last one are pretty funny, but the other 2 don't make sense to me. I'm so sick of every time somebody doesn't like something, the rest of us have to suffer for it. It's a photo of a sleepy kid used in a candy promotion, and the b*tch writing this article is going on and on about her 17-year-old lush! And then it gets even more nerve stimulating when the "statistics" given have absolutely no relationship with the writer's complaint. You know, not everybody has to live like we do. In many, many countries, so long as it isn't hurting anybody, they like to live and let live, while we like to force others to live the way a few of us think is "right".

dowell said...tell me exactly how you are 'suffering' because this author chose to express her opinion. 'suffering"? jeez..... you're just plain mean.... if your best friend came to you and said her daughter had made a mistake (that so frikkin many kids make) and gotten too drunk, and that it had changed the way she felt about things, would you call her a bad parent and refer to her daughter (your best friend's daughter) as a lush? no. why do you do it to a stranger whose article no one forced you to read.
if this article makes you suffer, then i suspect you live a hard life. perhaps you will experience a thought changing event. there's always hope.

Deborah Y Payton said...The babies are cute, but my concern is that someone will get the idea to actually give their babies alcohol, and think it's funny to re-create the look of these babies. People seem to do anything in reality for almost any reason. Our world has become and now is stupid.

litlhippiefriend said...WOW. I was totally mislead. I thought this was supposed to be an article about a woman's disposition against INFANTS who LOOK like they're drunk. It turned out to be about a very -uncool- mother whining about her TEENAGE daughter actually BEING drunk. Yeah, lady, kids do that. Most children try alcohol and marijuana and cigarettes before leaving high school. It happens. Get over it! You are pathetic. Just because you THINK you are cool, does not mean you are. It is very uncool to be taken by such surprise that your children would do something you didn't approve of. Grow up and get over it. Maybe that's what's wrong with the picture! You think you're your kids' friend so you feel betrayed when they disobey. Well let me tell you, cool or not, you'll never be a friend. You'll alwyas be the mom. They'll never see you as anything different. So they'll never be your friend. Quit bitching. That's all people do on here anymore. And just for the record, your kid never would have done that before the 90's -back when punishment by belt or switch was still publicly acceptable.

Tara said...Ok I admit, we have a picture of my 9 month old daughter chewing on an empty beer bottle. It had been washed out so there was no drips of beer to be found. We have this picture, but it is a private joke in our family and would NEVER show anyone else. I am not saying the photo is right, but we couldn't resist since she was going back to that bottle the whole day (and she doesn't even drink from a baby bottle). I do think this is a very imappropriate ad for the public. How many people are sitting their kids down and saying "Even though there are pictures of kids with these Chocolates, it isn't for you. You have to be an adult to have these chocolates." Come on now, unfortunately a lot of parents today aren't that in tune and honest with their children AND even if they are, to all kids, parents don't know anything and the media is the law! The media KNOWS the power that they hold and they are abusing it over and over again!

For Pete's sake, lighten up! You are so anal, I bet you are real fun to live with. Parents today are turning their children into hypochondriacs, sissies, mama's boys, whiny and obnoxious little brats. You demand nothing from them and pamper the little darlings too often. As they grow (and we have seen the consequences already) they become self centered, angry, lazy and rude. They also do not seem to have compassion for any one or any thing. You don't discipline because you think that it's cruel and abusive. You are full of crap. How in the hell did we survive as a species when discipline was applied to wayward children? Your children do not respect you, they laugh at you because you are a joke!
