We Tried It: Cynthia Rowley Diapers
The diapers, printed in 11 different patterns, are available in Target stores and online, and the news seems to be generating a bit of skepticism. People are asking: Does a baby really need designer diapers?
No, but then again neither does she need to have her underpants plastered with TV puppets and cartoons from birth. But that hasn't prevented every major brand from making it nearly impossible to find a diaper without one branded onto it for the past 10 years.
So, for the design-conscious or the commercial-averse parent, Pampers' announcement of these diapers was refreshing. For the parents who appreciate both -- something lovely (yes, even in the fleeting lifespan of a diaper) as well as disapproving of their child being a walking (er, crawling), billboard for Nickelodeon and Disney -- this is the disposable underpants jackpot that is long overdue. They can only hope that this collaboration, like those that Target has struck with other designers (for actual clothing), will be the start of many to come.
The only question is, what took them so long? For years now, parents who love good design have been able to buy stylish baby decor, accessories and clothing. How has this not hit the brand-name disposable diaper market -- the one item for which essentially every household with a child is a necessity -- until now? Likely the answer lies in some corporate economics, but let's not trouble ourselves with that. For now, while they last, let's just sit back and enjoy the pretty.
