Black Couple Surprised When Newborn Daughter is White
Filed under: In The News, Weird But True
Imagine the surprise of a black Nigerian couple in London when they discovered their newborn baby was a white girl.
No, it's not the second coming of Michael Jackson.
Professor Bryan Sykes, the head of human genetics at Oxford University, tells the British newspaper The Sun there's a perfectly reasonable scientific explanation for this sort of phenomenon: These things happen.
But they don't happen often. Ben and Angela Ihegboro tell the newspaper they didn't think they had any white ancestry, but Sykes says there must be a white skeleton in one of their family closets for Angela to give birth July 19 to a California surfer girl.
Newborn Nmachi has blue eyes and blond hair that would put Paris Hilton to shame. She is not, however, albino. Sykes tells The Sun that Ben and/or Angela must "have some form of white ancestry" in their DNA blueprint for such characteristics to be tucked away and forgotten in the back pocket of their genes.
It's puzzling, Sykes tells the newspaper.
"This might be the case where there is a lot of genetic mixing, as in Afro-Caribbean populations," he says. "But in Nigeria, there is little mixing."
Sykes adds Nmachi's appearance is a mystery all the way around.
"The hair is extremely unusual," he tells the newspaper. "Even many blonde children don't have blonde hair like this at birth."
Ben Ihegboro, 44, was understandably, uh, concerned when Nmachi was born.
"Actually, the first thing I did was look at her and say, 'What the flip?' " he tells the Sun. "I'm sure she's my kid. I just don't know why she's blond."
Angela Ihegboro, 35, spoke like a typical new mom.
"She's beautiful -- a miracle baby," she tells the paper. In fact, the name Nmachi is Nigerian for "Beauty of God."
Nmachi is the couple's third child. She joins 4-year-old brother Chisom and 2-year-old sister Dumebi, both of whom share their parents' dark skin.
Ben Ihegboro tells the Sun that Chisom keeps staring at his new sister with a puzzled expression.
"We're a black family. Suddenly he has a white sister," he tells the paper. "Of course, we are baffled, too, and want to know what's happened. But we understand life is very strange. All that matters is that she's healthy and that we love her. She's a proud British Nigerian."

Misty said...Queen Darling, you really are ignorant. Perhaps you should do some reading yourself into DNA and genetics. My husband and I, both have dark hair and hazel eyes, yet we have a red-headed child with blue eyes. I suppose that's not possible either?

Alicia said...This has been happening for thousands of years. Look up Moon Children in the Amazon. It's rare, but not unheard of for people with dark skin, eyes and hair to give birth to albino-like children with plae skin, eyes and hair.

Winking said...Yes, and the bottom line is this: lighter skin is better for coping in colder climates, while darker skin helps people living in warmer ones.
Science has proven that mankind started near the Equator, so light skin had to begin as a genetic mutation that in warmer places got squashed, but in cooler places became an advantage. Specifically, lighter skin lets in more sunlight, which aids in Vitamin D production. Darker skin blocks out harmful ultraviolet radiation. This is why darker people often have Vitamin D deficiency in cooler climates, while lighter people are at a greater risk of getting skin cancer in warmer places.
Note that this only held any value during an era in which global travel was nonexistent. In today's world, it simply no longer has much relevance, because we are now traveling all over the place! But if you really think about it, this is a good thing, because genetic diversity will make us better equipped to survive the rigors of space and populate other worlds -- which will probably be necessary, since we are destroying the one we're on...

Gloria said...Queen darling you are the most stupid and ignorant person around. My daughter is mix race black and her husband a German with blue eyes. Their two sons have blue eyes and daughter hazel. They all have white skin. My father was very brown skinned, mother was mixed black, Jewish, Irish, Native American and light skinned. Their children range from dark like my father to fair like my mom's side of the family. So you jerk, you just can't stand to think blacks and mixed blacks as well as minorities can have white kids. Best example, Ann Curry on Today show, she is half Japanese and white but looks Asian and her daughter looks Asian and her son looks totally white like his father, a fair as you can get blue eyed blonde. Jerk, you need to take a course in genetics, you are one who hates to be fooled by a white looking black/minority person. But Miss Racist, most of all, it's only the exterior features of a person, we are all the same, if the truth is told.

jessica said...this is non sense.. this here will prove to u that there is no such thing of ancestor gene nor white or black.. ppl come in all kids of shades. well epsciallly for ppl in there late 30's who make babies usaully get weird gene for the baby.. cuz my last brother is five and my mom was 36 wen she had him.. he was morn fairer among the rest of his siblings including me..like i said b4 mostly ppl in there late AGES HAVE WIERD BABIES they can be very light, twins, or mongoloids( retarded) no genes. but in tis situations it is rare its cud be either the mother had sex with two ppl at the same time and the sperm mixed, or blondes in there background from there parents cuz back then there were many slaves in africa and those brtish men wud have babies with them then wen that child gets older that story is nver being told to them.. but the best thing to do is check for a DNA test.. i hope thats his child..god bless

Barbara said...Simple Genetics, The eeebrown genes are dominant the blue eyes and blond hir are reccesive, So therefore two brown eyed black haired people can have a baby with blonde hair and blue eyes . But two blue eyed blond haired people could not have a brown eyed black haired child because if They had Those genes they would be brown haired and brown eyed This once again proves there is only one race the human race. We are all in it so Why cant We all get along?

CLM said...Barbara, you need to read up on Mendel. It's not that simple. Brown hair and brown eyes are NOT always reflective of dominant genes within an isolated gene pool, such as Native Americans, certain Asian populations, and certain African populations. That is why my brown haired, brown eyed mother of Native American descent has a blond haired, blue eyed daughter (me).

Sarah_Jo said...CLM, honey, reread what Barbara posted. Specifically the third sentence. "So therefore two brown eyed black haired people can have a baby with blonde hair and blue eyes."
She said exactly what you (and G. Mendel) said.

Valerie said...Once again, you need to research before making such a statement. My parents are both blue eyes and so is my brother. My grand parents are also blue eyes Yet I have brown eyes. No, my mother did not cheat. I look exactly like my father, except for the eye color. It is not usual for two blue eyed people to have a brown eyed child, but it does happen. It happened to me.

Suprsavr-Nazgrel said...Actually, two blue-eyed parents can produce a brown-eyed baby. The blue-eyed gene is just a brown-eyed gene with one or more defects in it so that there is no pigment expressed. It's not common, but every once in a while, the defective portion of one gene is transposed with an undefective portion of the other gene during meiosis (sperm/egg production), leading to a 'fixed' brown-eyed gene in a sperm or and egg, which is dominant over the blue gene contributed by the other parent.

Velma said...Thank God that Nmachi is in such good health and was born of such loving and understanding parents. God gave her to this family for a reason and time will tell what it is. There are probably very very few of us that don't have some mixed blood in our bodies and so what! We are all God's children and he loves us no matter what. So get off the black/white issue and be thankful she is such a beautiful and healthy child.
