'I See You Have a Family Decal on Your Car. Now I Will Kidnap Your Kids!'
OK, folks: Quiz time! What are the glaring problems with this letter to Annie's Mailbox -- and Annie's response?
"Dear Annie" (wrote a lady): Years ago people put little placards in their kids' windows so that firefighters could find them in the event of a fire. But then, she continued, these "proved dangerous because pedophiles also knew which bedrooms the children were in."
Americans oh-so-wisely scraped these pervert attractors (and potential child-savers) off their homes, the writer says. But now she sees a very similar problem with the little stick-figure decals that people put on the back of their cars. You know, the ones that show how many kids they've got, and which gender? "Yesterday, I saw a car with two soccer ball emblems in the back window, each with the name of one of two girls. I assume those two girls were their daughters. To me, this is as dangerous as the window placards because any pedophile could follow the car home and target the children in the future. Should I be concerned for these children?"
And she signed herself (perhaps anonymously, so the members of Pedophiles R Us could not immediately track her down for ruining their fun): "New York."
So here's pretty much what Annie wrote back: Not, "You fruitcake! Seriously, how many reruns of 'Law & Order' do you watch a day?" But rather: Good point! "Publicizing the fact that you have young children by displaying emblems on your home or car windows (especially with names) can invite trouble. While it is extremely unlikely that a pedophile would follow your car home, it is still a possibility that should not be ignored." The chances of something earthshakingly bad happening are "remote, but not impossible." Signed -- Annie
Here are the glaring problems as I see them:
1. Pedophiles were looking for placards to find children's windows? Like that's a big danger to kids -- predators with great vision and climbing abilities? Does Annie understand that about 90 percent of child abuse doesn't even involve a stranger, much less a cat burglar/predator hybrid?
2. Pedophiles can't figure out if you have children if they don't see a family decal on your car? I guess the car seat and Happy Meal boxes in the back seat are just too ambiguous?
3. Even though something is extremely unlikely, we should nonetheless be thinking about it, and preparing for it and devoting advice columns to it? OK, then let's think about that guy who recently chopped off his own arm because it got stuck in a furnace. Possible Annie response: "While it is extremely unlikely that this will happen to you, you may consider chopping off your arm now to prevent it from becoming stuck in a furnace in the future."
This is the kind of "What if?" thinking that drives me bonkers. "What if" a predator sees your family decal? If that's really too terrible to even contemplate, shouldn't we peel off all the, "My Child is Student of the Nanosecond at Happy Valley High" stickers, too? Why didn't those worry Annie? Why don't toys on the lawn worry Annie? Why don't houses worry Annie? After all, why would you live in a house if you didn't have adorable, vulnerable jailbait living in there with you? Parents! For God's sake, sell your house, bury the kids' toys, trade your minivan for a Smart Car and when anyone asks, "How are your kids?" Shrug and say, "Kids? What kids?"
Otherwise, they're just not safe.

Its a form of expression that allows parents and children to do something together. The best thing that will prevent pedophiles from getting to your children is supervision, know where they are, who they are with and what they are doing! 24 hours a day. If you have to work, find someone who is responsible to look after them, someone who has the same beliefs as you so that there is no question what the rules are when you are not around. Parents seriously, you brought them into this world, now take care of them! Spend time with them and forget the fact that they may want to be away from you, know where they are at all times, take away their cell phones, their un supervised internet access, their facebook and any other networking privlidges, and watch them!

Charles said...I think that the message was not so much that the stick figure are the big problem. I think that's silly. But when you put your young children's names on the back of the car as in the soccerball, basketball, volleyball decals it makes it that much easier to appear to know those kids. A person with bad intentions can approach them BY NAME. It's the same reason parents are advised not to put their kids names visable on the outside of backpacks and such.

Debbie said...Alexis, I know it may seem as if parents are parenoid but look at the times we live in... we live in a time and society full of sick, demented people out there. There are sick perverted people out there who do terrible things to children and don't think twice about it. These sickos are even taking these children right out of there own homes, out of there own bedrooms. Home is where you are suppose to feel and be safe, and now even that si at risk sometimes. So you can't find fault with parents that feel the need to be extra cautious with regards to their childrens safety. Nobody wants to live like that, always looking over your shoulder, but unfortunately, thats teh kind of world we are living in, and it's very sad.

Uly said...WHICH children are being taken from their own bedrooms, Debbie? I can think of only two cases like that - Elizabeth Smart, and Polly Klaas. And neither of those is exactly "recent".

acm said...yeah, I think that the whole point of "freerange kids" movement is to point out that we don't, in fact, live in "dangerous times" -- the statistics are just about the same (or better!) than 40 years ago -- but that the media has made us *feel* less safe, and we need to fight against the stranglehold that that has on us as parents (or people, for that matter).

rn said...Um...I'm a nurse in a prison that contains mostly child molesters, commonly known as a "special housing unit". Because I work in a law enforcement setting where I am privy to graphic information about the crimes that these inmates committed, and because I am committed to the safety of children in my family, I know not to display anything in public that has my child's name on it. Those little stickers that indicate that you have 4 little prepubescent girls and a dog-what the heck are people thinking?
Do you know how many convicted pedophiles live within 1 mile of your home? Do you have any clue about how many of these inmates are currently being released as correctional systems feel the squeeze of shrinking budgets across the nation?
This is Safety 101 for parents. Shame on you for posting otherwise.

Jennifer said...Thank you. Let there be balance. I live in a major city where serious offenders are being released early because the city cannot afford to keep them locked up. I agree with you!

Uly said...They're probably thinking that fewer than 200 children a year are kidnapped by strangers and molested (most of them pre-teens and teens, by the way, not prepubescent... not that it makes it better, I'm just sayin') and that over 90% of all molesters target the kids they know, typically THEIR OWN children.
If you know enough to put (or not put) decals on your window telling how many kids you have, you probably already know your kids' names.

srsly said...I honestly can't believe they let idiots like you post on a blog such as this. These stickers are completely irresponsible for exactly the reasons you think. It's common sense.

lak1 said...The problem isn't "knowing that you have children." It's "knowing the names of your children."
Think about it: a stranger approaches your child, says, "Your sister Jessica got hurt and Mommy had to go take care of her. She asked me to come pick you up." To a young child, mentioning the names of his or her siblings is an easy way to engender trust and familiarity in the child.
In addition, putting the names of your family members (and pets!) is an invitation for identity theft. How many of us use pets names' or variations on them as passwords, or have them as answers to our "safety questions" on our online accounts?
It's not called being paranoid, it's called NOT INVITING TROUBLE.

Brian said...Or, if you don't like being a negative person, living in fear, you could realize its much, much, much more comon for a child to be in a serious car accident. A rescuer knowing how many people could be in the car could help them ensure they get everyong, and know your children's names could help them calm down if they are panicked from the accident.
Of course, thats still a reason rooted in fear, but at least its a much more likely fear than child molesters..

s0nicfreak said...So you teach your child not to go with anyone they don't know, even if the person knows names. And setup a family codeword and teach the child that if the person says this word, you really sent them, so go with them; if not, don't.
Someone could learn your childrens' names simply by standing nearby and listening for you, a sibling, a friend, etc. to call out to the child. And as has been said, a child is much more likely to be molested by a family member, who already knows their name, than a stranger.

Alexis said...Oh please...do you know how many other dangers you are surrounded by and encounter on a daily basis? most counties have a sex offender registry that's available to the public. the chance that there is more than one sex offender within a mile of your house is very low. granted its good advice that you shouldn't include the names of your kids on your rear window, but the idea that some people put out there that there are pedophiles and sex offenders literally waiting for you behind every corner is utter nonsense. these are probably the same people the don't get their kids vaccinated and end up infecting half the first grade with measles...

Evan said...We live in a time of media over-saturation. 24-hour news networks playing stuff like Nancy Grace makes it seem as though there are far more perverts out there than there are. But if you look at the actual numbers, there's little reason for concern. Don't live life as a paranoid fool.
