Girl Calls 911 From Car as Her Mother Allegedly Drives Drunk
Filed under: In The News, Weird But True, Alcohol & Drugs

A 12-year-old girl called 911 from a car on Interstate 84 in New York earlier this week. The emergency? She reported her mother was not speaking properly and was weaving into other lanes while she was driving.
Now, Jamie Hicks, 48, of Islip, N.Y., faces more than a year in jail on felony drunken driving charges.
The girl and a 10-year-old were still in the car July 25, when New York State police arrested Hicks and charged her with driving while intoxicated. According to police reports, her blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.
The New York Post reports the arrest was made at about 6 p.m.
Hicks was lodged in the Putnam County Jail on $1,000 bail and was released today.
Capt. Robert Nuzzo of the New York State Police Department tells ParentDish Hicks is scheduled to appear in court at 3 p.m. on Aug. 17. He says she was arrested under Leandra's Law, a New York law that makes it a felony to drive drunk with children in the vehicle.
The law, which went into effect Dec. 18, 2009, was named after Leandra Rosado, an 11-year-old girl who was killed on the West Side Highway in New York City two months earlier when her friend's mother, Carmen Huertas, flipped the car they were in while allegedly drunk. Six other children also were injured during the incident.
If found guilty of the felony, Nuzzo tells ParentDish, Hicks could face more than a year behind bars.

I have been guilty of driving under the influence with children in the car, it certainly is one of the worst decisions I ever made in my life and thank the GOOD LORD above that I never injured anyone during that period of my life. Alcoholism is a very real and deadly disease that makes otherwise normal and wonderful people do horrendous things in the name of chemical dependence. I commend this child for being brave and doing the right thing for both her and her mother. I pray that her mother gets the help she obviously needs to get sober. God Bless.

michele said...The only reason this mother needs "support" is so she does not get on the road and potentially kill anyone else while she's plastered. I'm the child of drunks and I have zero sympathy for her. If she had shot up with heroin before getting behind the wheel, would you have the same sympathy for her? Thank God the little girl had a cell phone.

My mom lost her baby when she was pregnant when a drunk driver hit her. Because someone chooses to be responsible and values life doesn't make them perfect. However, I do agree that this woman needs help. My thoughts are with these precious children and their family.
As for the people who troll message boards wielding their figuative red pen looking for spelling and grammar mistakes like a sour-faced old school marm: You know what's worse than bad spelling and grammar? Your obtuse comments that try to stifle human dignity and the right to self-expression. Get another hobby. You'll be happier and lose the need to put others down.

BERNICE said...GOOD FOR THE DAUGHTER WHO CALLED 911. SHE COULD HAVE BEEN DEAD IN A TERRIBLE CAR CRASH, THAT MOTHER SHOULD GO TO PRISON, WITHOUT A DOULT, HOW DARE THE MOTHER DRIVE WITH HER DAUGHTER AND A FRIEND WHILE DRUNK. ITS ABOUT TIME THE LAW DID SOMETHING ABOUT THESE MOTHERS WHO DRIVE DRUNK. THEY NEED A INTERVENTION. GOD KNOWS, THE WHOLE COUNTRY NEEDS THAT.

Margie said...Geez people. That girl did her mother a favor. Not to mention possibly saving many lives. Hopefully the mother will recognize this as a wake up call and get the help she needs. Ya having your mom gone for a year is tough, but living with an alcholic that disreguards your safty isn't much fun either. Lets hope mom gets the help and support she needs and realizes what her daughter did was out of love and concern for all of them. Sure the kid might have done it just out of fear, but she can come to relize what she did was very adult and be proud of herself for it.

Three weeks ago, I ended up in the ER with my 15 yr old epileptic daughter who had a computer induced seizure because the blog she visits all the time was full of people typing in caps! I have had one myself also not long after a stroke. People don't realize that it is truly dangerous for some of us online to read all caps blogs and why should not have to be omitted from reading or adding comments because of a few who refuse to release the caps locks.

Heidi said...I've always though that typing in all caps is rude because it's like shouting. I've never done it and hate to read them. I'm sure most people don't realize all caps can cause health issues. However, if reading all caps is dangerous to you and your daughter health-wise, maybe you should stick to uncontroversial stories where there may be fewer people typing in caps for the effect of making a strong point. Unless there is a blog police force out there to make sure no-one types in all caps you will continue to have problems.
