But the reality TV star of 19 Kids and Counting has got it covered. The 43-year-old uber mom spoke to ParentDish by phone yesterday about life with a preemie, the surprising cause of her baby's upset tummy and her own plans for losing the (19th) baby weight. An edited version of the interview follows.
ParentDish: Welcome home. How are you feeling?
Michelle Duggar: I'm doing good. I feel much better than I did 7½ months ago, that's for sure. I'm so glad to have Josie home.
PD: Tell me about Josie? Is she your first preemie?
MD: Our second set of twins, Jedidiah and Jeremiah, came at about five weeks before their due date, but they were 5 lbs. each. They were in the hospital for about nine days. Jeremiah's lung collapsed and he had antibiotics. They're 11 years old now and just fine.
PD: Now about Josie.
MD: We are so thankful. It could've been much more serious. We're grateful that it was a diet change that made the difference for her. We changed from breast milk to a predigested formula that has no lactose, and within 12 hours she was better. And, within a week, she was pooing on her own, without us having to give her an enema. She was a totally different baby a week later.
PD: Wow, breast milk was the culprit?
MD: Typically, they never want to take a preemie off breast milk, but in her case the lactose in my milk was causing a problem. Her body was not producing lactase, which breaks down the lactose.

My 1st was a miscarraige, 2nd was a preemie, 3rd was bed rest from 4 mo to having her 1 day before due date and my 3rd baby I had not one problem went into labor night of my due date and had a heathy baby girl 40 minutes after getting to the hospitial. You go duggars have as many as your heart wants your a excellent mama. I love watching your family grow.

Lyndsey said...There are so many ILL-PREPARED and BAD mothers in this world who are having baby after baby with different men and are letting the government raise those children. The Duggars are amazing parents with well-rounded children. Why are you all so critical of them? At least they are active in their children's lives and are actually RAISING their own family (debt-free, I might add). God bless you Duggars...those children are a gift from God!!

They pay taxes, and don't take handouts, and they extend aid to people everywhere with their mission trips. I'd rather see people like the Duggars raise a huge brood than someone who's unkind and ungodly raise just one.

Mommy said...How can you say these people "raise their own" and "don't take handouts?" WHO do you think paid that hospital bill for the newborn that had to be in the neighborhood of a million dollars? WE did, either through the hospital's federal funding or through our insurance premiums. The Duggers are prostituting their childrens' lives in order to make enough money to raise a brood they couldn't afford to take care of. How can ANY two people give the needed amount of love, affection, and attention to 19 kids? I consider what they're doing to be abuse and neglect. I would rather see someone turn to the government for help than plaster their children's private lives on television in order to make money. The kids don't go to school and will grow up ignorant, just like the parents. Just look at the oldest son. The only thing he was capable of doing was selling used cars. I'm guessing he would be having big $$ problems if it weren't for his cut of the show receipts. Despicable!
I fear that the Duggers will continue to practice their only marketable skill -- breeding litters -- out of fear of being cut off of the TLC gravy train,at least until someone dies. Then, TLC will make a special episode about that one and we'll all be expected to feel sorry for them. This family is a train wreck waiting to happen. Someone needs to stop it! What's even scarier is the people posting here who think they are okay? Where are YOUR values?

You don't know anything about raising kids or being in a tight knit family. Love is multiplied not divided. I only have 6 children and they are almost all grown and out of the house. They all have jobs and they all come to family dinners at least once a week. I live in Los Angeles and we PAY for everything ourselves. I can imagine if we lived in a less expensive state it might have been different, we could have had more. I probably am paying to raise 20 other kids with all the illegal immigration here.
That is something to rant about!

She looks retarded. I know I know, people will curse me for saying that but she does. The mother is too old & worn out. I applaud the Duggars for taking care of their own ( I hear they are on no kind of welfare) God fearing people who love each other. I love the whole idea, but agree, enough is enough.

Bev said...How much are they willing to put children through just to say they had another one? You know there is no one that could possibly afford 19 children and all these hospital bills, grocery bills, dentist, drs visit, it goes on and on, so why have more children you must have to have others help support.

Jim Bob has lifetime insurance that he worked for no different from any other person who had his job before. So instead of judging these people do your research, they are taking care of their kids not the goverment, that's more than I can say for alot of people. If they are blessed to have another baby it doesn't mean that it will be a premie, her complication could've happened to a first time more anyone for that matter

I believe the parents are specially blessed people and their attachment and love is above and beyond for one another, again God Bless this family as they have not brought their little one home. Can begin a bit of normalcy as a family. Love And Well Wishes
