But the reality TV star of 19 Kids and Counting has got it covered. The 43-year-old uber mom spoke to ParentDish by phone yesterday about life with a preemie, the surprising cause of her baby's upset tummy and her own plans for losing the (19th) baby weight. An edited version of the interview follows.
ParentDish: Welcome home. How are you feeling?
Michelle Duggar: I'm doing good. I feel much better than I did 7½ months ago, that's for sure. I'm so glad to have Josie home.
PD: Tell me about Josie? Is she your first preemie?
MD: Our second set of twins, Jedidiah and Jeremiah, came at about five weeks before their due date, but they were 5 lbs. each. They were in the hospital for about nine days. Jeremiah's lung collapsed and he had antibiotics. They're 11 years old now and just fine.
PD: Now about Josie.
MD: We are so thankful. It could've been much more serious. We're grateful that it was a diet change that made the difference for her. We changed from breast milk to a predigested formula that has no lactose, and within 12 hours she was better. And, within a week, she was pooing on her own, without us having to give her an enema. She was a totally different baby a week later.
PD: Wow, breast milk was the culprit?
MD: Typically, they never want to take a preemie off breast milk, but in her case the lactose in my milk was causing a problem. Her body was not producing lactase, which breaks down the lactose.

tessy said...I feel so sad for these kids. They dont have a room to their selves. They are never alone . Them girls take care of them babys. not the mom . They cant say they have their own clothes, cause they all share clothes. sad sad sad . take away the show and let the dad make his own money by working a normal job. they would never make it .

eileen said...If you don't want a big family, don't have one....but don't get snarky on those who do, especially if they are footing their own bill! (and yes, they have prioritized so that they can afford to do that)
...giving kids chores and responsibilities is not a crime, whether it is taking out the trash, or helping with a younger sibling.
Would I choose their lifestyle? NO WAY...but it's their choice...(btw I am the youngest of 12)

They MADE themselves our business when they decided to sell their children's lives for a few bucks. Of course they don't have debt! They make good money prostituting their children for entertainment for people like you, who, apparently, have nothing going on in your own life. Also, if you think the Duggers are "educated" then you must not have gone past the 3rd grade. These people are ignorant.

Theresa said...Josie is a miracle, She is God's little miracle. I think the Duggers should count the blessings they have and stop. Children are a blessing, but the older they get the riskier it is for both mother and baby. She has small children that need her. To risk another pregnancy would be unfair to all of them. Including her and another baby may not be so lucky to survive next time. Enjoy the family she has.

Candy said...I would also love to meet the Duggars. I think they are amazing! I am not religious, have only 1 child (who was a preemie, -14 weeks premature, 32 years ago), been married 35 years. Josie does not look 'retarded' (seems to me the person who wrote that, is), it's a preemie thing-she's as cute as she can be, that special look goes away, probably before she's 3. EW said...I wish there were more families like this one, big or small. They are wonderful people. All of those children are supposed to be here. God created every one of them. I can't believe someone would say that Josie looks retarded and it's time for them to stop. God does not make mistakes. It just amazes me how some people can be so judgemental. It is none of our business how many children they have. Especially since they support them without any help. On top of that they are debt free and have income from not only their show but from their rental properties. All the children are very respectful and are taught good values. We could all learn something from this family and I say God bless them.

They are able to survive and support this enormous family because of the monies received from TLC, which is substantial. This is not a question of whether children are a gift from God. People from large families don't have better parents or offspring just because of the size.Conservative christian values are not the determining factor, in the creation of good human beings. Traditional gender roles or gender bias is not the basis for better children. she continues to procreate even though she puts her life and the life of her unborn child at risk. How does she children as wonderful gifts from God when each pregnancy due to advanced maternal age could result in her death and leaving these wonderful gifts motherless? I wonder if TLC will tape her funeral?

No one needs that many kids to take care of, and the older children end up with resposibilities they shouldn't have until they have their own kids. Not to mention, the many childhood activities like little league or recitals that mom can't make because one of the smaller ones has a problem. None of the children get the amount of attention they deserve.

Why do you think classrooms try to stay small. Better one on one attention. Get snipped, get some condoms, or just stop screwing.
