Aieeee! Lice!
They are about as welcome on your child's head as Godzilla at a downtown Tokyo sushi bar.
For all the horror they produce -- in both kids and their parents -- head lice are not an uncommon problem in childhood. Still, you want to give them their walking papers as soon as possible.
We asked contributors to Seed.com, AOL's website for freelance writers and photographers, to share their head lice-related memories and tips for giving these creepy crawlers the bum's rush.
'Head' Counselor
"During the one and only year I worked as a camp counselor, I was prepared to deal with mosquitoes, ticks, even spiders," recalls Shellie Braeuner. "But when first one girl, then several, then my entire cabin, started scratching their heads, I didn't need to scratch mine."
"A lice check turned up the tiny livestock on every head in the cabin, including mine," she adds. "I spent my only free weekend of the entire session using all washing machines in the only laundromat in the tiny town near the camp washing every stitch in that cabin."
Hold the Mayo
Susan Radzic used the mayonnaise approach.
"When I was combing my son's hair on the last day of kindergarten, I was a bit puzzled by what appeared to be small white dots on his hair," she says.
After giving him a shower, she combed his hair. But the flakes hadn't budged. "As I scratched my head, both in confusion and because my scalp had been itchy the last few days, I thought I saw something move in his hair," she adds.
"OMG! He's got head lice!"
A nurse at the pediatrician's office told her not to bother with lice-killing shampoo. It's too expensive. "Just put mayonnaise on their heads for an hour and the bugs will suffocate," Radzic remembers her saying.
She also remembers thinking it was dumb advice. So she called the Centers for Disease Control. "The woman I spoke with was very understanding and helpful. She directed me to the CDC's website and told me to hold the mayo on the hair," she says.
Now Radvic's a believer. She stocked up on mayo. "Luckily, we have not had the expense of 'hosting' these unwanted guests again and I saved the mayo for sandwiches," she says.
Thanks a Lot, Mom
Dana Hiles discovered his son had head lice after the boy used a friend's hairbrush at school.
He says he thought of all the home remedies his mother always told him about. "None of them worked."
What did work was a regular kit from the store. "This was a big relief for me, but even more so for my daughter who was scratching her head constantly," he says.
Blonde Ambition
Skye Moffett says you can use a lot of things to get rid of head lice, up to and including kerosene. Hint: Don't smoke when applying this remedy.
However, head lice also hate coloring bleach, she says.
"If you do not mind him/her being blonde then I would use the bleach, it will kill every egg and adult lice on your child in no time," she adds. "If bleach is not an option, douse your child's scalp in two parts kerosene, one part water. It might sting the scalp slightly, but this kills everything."
The Lex Luthor Look
"The first time a lice infestation hit our home I buzzed my head and my 5-year-old daughter got her first real hair cut," recalls Rob Clark. "In the country we lived in at the time, infestations were frequent. It wasn't long before we considered ourselves experts regarding the treatment process.
A Family Affair
"Once when I was about 9, someone in our family brought home lice," Rachel Mae. "My two cousins and I had it, our parents, all of our neighborhood friends and even some of their parents.
Her mother tried everything she could think of. She used the head lice-killing shampoos and sprays. She cut her hair. She covered her head in Vaseline and made her wear a shower cap for an entire day.
"None of these things worked for very long," she says. "Eventually she got smart and got everyone that was having similar problems to do their treatments at the same time. Finally after months of on and off infestations, everyone was clear, and we stayed that way."
A Perm Won't Do It
Just do one thing if your child has head lice, says Melanie Recoy. Don't take them to a hair salon. She's a stylist herself and knows there's not much she can do.
"The old wives' tale that a perm can get rid of lice just isn't true," she says. "The fact is, if someone comes into our salons with lice, we have to sanitize the whole place. Try some RID instead. We can't perform miracles when we are cleaning."
Final Surrender
Roxanne Hammons fought lice for years with her daughter.
"I would put the harsh chemicals on her hair then comb through the tangled mess it created," she recalls. "I'd get a few out, but most were left to dwell and procreate in her hair. I would wash all the bedding and shower the upholstered furniture with the stinky canned spray. After about a year of this endless cycle, we still had them.
"I would hate to know the tally of the money I spent on all that stuff that is supposed to 'treat' head lice."
"Treat" is a good word, she says. "It was like giving them an ice cream cone," she says.
She tried every remedy recommended. She even tried vinegar and aluminum foil. "To pickle them, I suppose, she says.
She tried dousing them with motor oil. Nothing.
"I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I firmly believe the little rascals just got bored and moved on to some other kid's head," she says.

Heather said...What finaly worked for us was after treating the hair we used a flat iron ( curling iron works too) we " striaghtened" every inch of hair which fried the eggs and killed them and any nits that we possible missed. You can tell it is working because you can hear the eggs sizzle ( yes it is kind of gross) but it worked.

SQZ said...Flatiron is the best. especially if it has a steam feature. The mayo mentioned in the article does work as long as you use a fine comb.

It is baby oil. yep. thats it. they slide right off cause they cant hold on and you just wash it off in the shower. may need to do this a few times but they should outlaw the stuff you have to buy cause is dangerous. you know the lice shampoos. bad for eyes and brain

Laura said...Our daughter came down with head lice when she had her last visit with her father at a foster agency. We fought and fought it for months. We tried using RID & Nix. We thought the Nix worked but nope, neither did RID. What finally worked was an over the counter stuff called Lice MD. My husband bought it at Walgreens. It was much chepaer than the other too as well. We got rid of the lice in less than 2 treatments...actually 1. It's a bit on the oily side but it worked wonders. Haven't had an infestation in over 5 months. Worked like a charm.
Just my 2 cents. 8)

Deborah said...Omgosh.. when my daughter woke me up in the middle of the night scratching the daylights out of her thick mop of hair (it's actually beautifully curly), I instantly knew. What else could it be? So, it's 3am and I and my husband are slowing picking thru her hair with flashlights when all of a sudden... THERE! It was like a shawdow moved from one strand of hair to the another and then disappear. Creepy buggers. Anyway, I freaked out. My first time dealing with this and hopefully, the last. The only thing I had on hand that I thought would do some good was lavender oil. Well; I took that lavender oil and I doused her with it. And, for the next two hours, we went through her hair strand by strand. We found only 2 large lice - dead. They fell right out of her hair onto the white towel. There were no eggs to be found. She must have picked them up at that old movie theatre we visited earlier the day before. Perhaps they had no time to lay any eggs or perhaps they fell out with the lavender. All I know - is that after I put that lavender oil on her head.. that was all she wrote. So, I keep a few bottles on hand. If you choose to try this; make sure you get the essential oil.

Finally, I decided to try virgine olive oil. It worked, but then I had to figure out what to do with the oil. All I had on hand was Dawn dish detergent.. This really works. A friends daughter was in the band (wool uniforms are good for holding lice), and I told her about this. That was the last time she had it also.

Connie said...I have three daughters with really long hair, when one came home from school with her uninvited guests, I checked all of them. We tried the shampoos...But for all three it cost a fortune. They just wouldn't go away. So I searched and searched...we tried listerine. I pour listerine over their heads, wrap it up with saran wrap and let it sit for an hour or so. Then we add childrens shampoo to it and lather up. Then a regular rinse. They told me that the cooling felt really good on their heads after all the itching. The listerine kills the bugs and there is something about the childrens shampoo that releases the "glue" from the eggs so that they are able to be combed out. They smell minty, and for all three girls it cost me less than $5.00.

C said...Hello everyone, just thought Id let you know my story, I tryed over the counter Rid, Doctors prescribed cream etc......Nothing worked I was getting really upset because my girls had it for 3 months off and on. I tryed another idea, I looked up online about LIsterine the yellow bottle, I put shower caps on my kids and it only took 2 hours, I drenched them with listerine and when it was time to take the caps off, You could see the dead bugs in them. WOW thats all it took for us. I only did it once and they havent got them back and its been 6 months free of LIce. Please try it because it does have alcohol that kills them within minutes. I swear by it. Dont spend money like I did. I bought one bottle for 6 bucks at Target. Dont bother washing beds etc... just get rid of the ones on the kids heads and maybe then just wash their beds but nothing else needs to be done. Doctors told me to wash everything but research tells you that they have to live in the hair to survive. Good luck...

bitsie said...Sorry to say this... but schools do let kids stay with head lice I work in one almost 20 years. Once the nurse knows the child has head lice she sends a note home telling parents to do hair and if they can send empty bottle to nurse. This is the sad part many parents dont do hair or they send child back saying they used mayo
and some it works but some parents are too lazy to comb out so the kid ends up back in school! We were told if they are just the eggs and not live brown bugs( yet) we can't keep the child out of school. I see it all the time especially when there are many brothers and sisters who have lazy parents who wont wash bedding and brushes.before you know it half the school has lice!!!!!

Kathryn said...The best thing we found after treating head lice for over a year with our daughter was tea tree oil!!! Super great stuff. I also wash all of my kids's hair with tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner and we have been lice free forever! It is gross but when we put the tea tree oil on her hair the lice were litterally jumping off of her head. I don't think they like the smell of it or something.

Sharon said...Tea Tree oil is the Best! My grand daughter had lice every time we turned around. She was almost toxic from store bought remedies. The health food store recommended tea tree, said to put ten drops on her head, cover with a shower cap for ten minutes then rinse. Put tea tree shampoo on for another ten minutes then the conditioner and comb. We only use tea tree shampoo and conditioner for the kids because lice will not come back if you do.

Pam said...Teat tree oil shampoo and conditioner is the only thing that worked for us as well. My daughter has super sensitive skin and those toxic lice killing kits left her with small sores all over her head. We also ended up using the tea tree oil shampoo to get rid of our dogs fleas.

trish said...tea tree oil is the best and easiest of all. I put 10 drops in any shampoo. The whole family uses it. Yes it smells, but regular conditioner covers the scent. well worth the money. I've been using it for three years no lice and it seems to help with conditioning the hair. Great product.

Teacher said...I am not sure who thought that putting bleach or kerosene on a kid's head is a good idea but ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!! Not only can they easily cause burns to the more tender skin of a child, but, these things are TOXIC!! Breathed or applied to the skin, you are causing brain and lung damage. While killing lice you are killing the poor kid. Take the advice of a doctor or from the CDC as bugs are more resistant now and if you don't get them the first time they get passed over and over again in the classroom.

Me being a cosmetologist myself asked my mom a cosmetologist herself, why wouldn't perm solution work? I tried on my two kids, sister, and her daughter. It worked first time, everytime. Yes salons must refuse to touch your infested head, but you may find someone willing to do it at home. Better yet, do it yourself at home. Just don't wrap in rods. Saturate the hair, leave on for the time required (most are now self timing for 20 minutes) rinse and neutralize as directed. The adults die and the nits rinse away.
