California Faces Worst Whooping Cough Epidemic in 50 Years

The death toll -- now at seven -- has almost doubled and, with 2,700 cases of the disease reported, physicians' concerns have turned to alarm.
National Public Radio reports California now faces its worst whooping cough epidemic in 50 years.
Many physicians thought, like diphtheria, whooping cough was largely a thing of the past, and that it had been all but wiped out by vaccines.
But that's why the disease is particularly brutal to young children who have not yet been vaccinated or had a chance for their bodies to build up immunity to the disease.
The vaccine for whooping cough starts when a child is 2 months old. Booster shots are needed until age 5, and, NPR reports, it can take those five years for some children to build immunity.
Meanwhile, they're vulnerable.
It doesn't help that some parents in California refuse to get their children vaccinated. Childhood vaccines have been blamed for causing autism, a myth refuted by study after study. Some people also ascribe to the belief that vaccines are some sort of vast government conspiracy.
According to NPR, California's Department of Public Health cites three schools in the state where 80 percent of parents have signed a "personal belief exemption" to keep their children from being vaccinated.
Dr. Harvey Karp, a child development specialist and assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Southern California, tells NPR 75 to 90 percent of whooping cough cases are seen in teenagers and adults.
The disease is not particularly deadly in these older populations. However, Karp adds, many of the patients have lower immunities because people have not been diligent about getting booster shots.
This makes them vulnerable to the disease, which, in turn, they risk passing on to infants.
Booster shots for whooping cough and other maladies are available for adults, but many adults are unaware they should get booster shots every 10 years, NPR reports.
"Doctors -- especially pediatricians -- aren't doing a good enough job," Karp tells NPR. "When you go into the doctor's office for your child's care, your pediatrician should be telling you that you should be getting immunized as well."

This disease was for the most part irradicated here in the USA and now thanks to the neglect of the government to enforce the laws the whole population is at risk. Last time it was leprosy, what will be next........?

Paula said...Here's a bit of info for all you IDIOTS blaming parents for not vaccinating their children and spreading it..... If vaccines work, then your child who IS vaccinated isn't at risk, because, if the vaccines work your child can't get the the disease it's vaccinated against.... You people are such idiots.... every time vaccine use goes down, the CDC puts out these alarms.... Get a grip you idiots!!

Dr. John said...Be careful of a study that does not have the percentage of disease of vaccinated people. Whooping cough epidemics generally occur 50-75% in vaccinated people. Check miller's books.

But did you know that they thought it wasn't necessary to include it in Tetanus shots anymore, so they they left it out for years! Until there was an up serge of Whooping Cough in this country and it's included in the tetanus shot again. We live near a reservation and Amish to the East and West. The Amish do not believe in inoculations. Nor does a Jehovah Witness. So, over the years it has put all of at risk. Especially, if you haven't had a Tetanus shot in 10 years. That's the shot you really need to keep up on! Whether you are an adult or a child! You can get shots free at your local Health Dept. That's why when you go to the Emergency Room for a cut, they do not take any changes and they just you the shot.

Heather said...Actually wooping cough came back before Obama. My son had it during the Bush era so should we blame him? We all have our vaccines and we all caught it. TB is also back because of people who don't get vaccines. We had an outbreak here near a Mennonite community the only people who got sick hadn't had the vaccine. Should we blame the Mennonites? Leprosy is also huge problem in SE Asia more so then in Mexico so who should we blame for that.
Diseases happen when there are a lot of people close together so should we ban cities too?

Local pediatricians were trying to tell us it was Asthma. Luckily we pushed for antibiotic which may have lessened the severity. In some countries they call this the "80-day cough"...its true...we're at 60 days now.

And you can thank the "Oprafication" of medicine, because Oprah invites on to her show people like Jenny and Suzanne Somers, who spread bad medical ideas without any medication knowledge!

I told her Dr. she had "whooping cough". This was in 1999. Her Dr. said he had only seen 2 cases in his career and almost blew me off. I had this disease as a child and know first had how deadly and frightning it can be. You CANNOT get your breath!! Lucky for her he listened to me and put her into the hospital. The test came back positive and she was hospitalized for 8 days. I shudder to think what might have happened if they had ignored this again.

Carol Walton said...Dr Karp...you must NOT be a pediatrician. We, pediatricians spend countless hours talking to parents about immunizations and their importance. Yes, no immunization is 100% foolproof...that's where boosters come in to try to get that number as close to 100% as possible. Parents deciding NOT to immunize their children do so out of media-hyped misinformation. Put the blame where it really is! During outbreaks, everyone should be immunized.

NONE of them have had side effects other then feeling a little icky the first 24 hours after.. next day they are fine... NONE Of them have autism or anything else wrong with them.. that is such BS.. i think its something in the water where these high cases of autism is turning up. theres something enviromental old factories closed down.. anyone ever watch CLASS ACTION with John Travolta as an attorney? based on a true story from where factories used to dump toxic waste in peoples back yards, in the water etc,, all where we unknowingly get into it.. someone would have to be accountable so they turn the attention away from where its REALLY coming from...
my oldest son got the whooping cough when he was young, he was vaccinated. it was scary we kept the window open in the winter and it didnt last long, he got just a mild case of it thankfully to the vaccine, his immune system didnt have time to be fully immune from it but it helped him from getting a severe case of it. the ice cold air of winter helped ease the symptoms.. vaccinations dont keep us from getting it completely , it makes the disease bearable and mild if we do end up catching something...
yes our parents had those round marks on their arms from mandatory innoculations. we need to go back to that. Denge (spelling) fever used to be known to tropical places people travel to, its now in the US... TB is on the rise...so are a number of others.. Vaccination is key to keeping the plague from making a comeback... there is more of a chance of your child dying from a preventable disease if you choose not to vaccinate then it is for that child to get autism!!!
the benefits OUTWEIGH the risks!! cuz now not only is your child going to get a deadly disease which is normally NOT deadly . but that child is going to pass it on to the rest of your family. his/her friends and their families etc.. IS IT REALLY WORTH IT???

so if it's the fault of all the people who don't get vax why do so many people (who are supposedly immune) then catch the sickenss? perhaps the vax aren't as good as the doctors tell us it is. apparently it isn't since all of a sudden they say that people need boosters and even those in the medical field didn't know this. and what about those people who CAN'T have vax, like my daughter because she is deathly allergic to eggs? sorry but she isn't getting any vax. deal with it. why don't you just worry about your own family, since they got shots they are fine right, you don't have to worry about them getting sick, right? so shut up and mind your own business and let me and my family stay away from unneeded meds. and the only reason we have viruses etc. that are resistant to meds is because of the OVER USE of meds. that's what causes super bugs which are what people are starting to get. if these were the older strains they would be taken care of right away with a regular medicine. YOU with the overreaction and over medication caused these problems. you tried to mess with nature and it found a way to kill people anyway. thats how it works. but you probably ran out and got the H1N1 vax too, just like the government told you because you were scared of all the hype they created. the H1N1 killed fewer people then the regular flu does every year, so much for a pandemic. by the way mr. medical nurse, the H1N1 was a combination of 3, yes 3 strains of flu viruses. now how on earth did 3 strains (from 3 differnt parts of the world mind you) manage to come together in a small village in mexico in a little boy? i think it didn't naturally, and lots of people didn't sink into the hype, and look we are all still here. you go ahead and put blind faith in the gov, but IF the government EVER made it mandatory i would still not get the vax. they have no business telling people to get vaxed. they can make quarentine etc if you get sick but they can't make it mandatory to get vax.

Bill said...I don't where most of you get your facts about only the illegals bringing all these illnesses. i think that if you check your history books...yes either dust them off or ask your local library for some information. You will find that immigrants founded this country. That means that most of us came from those families that brought their own native illnesses too. Most of us are legal now, but still immirgrants. The only true native here were the indians, but the immigrants thought to take care of that part. So easy to point the finger at someone else when looking in your own back yard first and taking steps to make sure you and your children get vaccinated properly should be the main priority. Such a shame and waste of precious time and energy.
