California Faces Worst Whooping Cough Epidemic in 50 Years

The death toll -- now at seven -- has almost doubled and, with 2,700 cases of the disease reported, physicians' concerns have turned to alarm.
National Public Radio reports California now faces its worst whooping cough epidemic in 50 years.
Many physicians thought, like diphtheria, whooping cough was largely a thing of the past, and that it had been all but wiped out by vaccines.
But that's why the disease is particularly brutal to young children who have not yet been vaccinated or had a chance for their bodies to build up immunity to the disease.
The vaccine for whooping cough starts when a child is 2 months old. Booster shots are needed until age 5, and, NPR reports, it can take those five years for some children to build immunity.
Meanwhile, they're vulnerable.
It doesn't help that some parents in California refuse to get their children vaccinated. Childhood vaccines have been blamed for causing autism, a myth refuted by study after study. Some people also ascribe to the belief that vaccines are some sort of vast government conspiracy.
According to NPR, California's Department of Public Health cites three schools in the state where 80 percent of parents have signed a "personal belief exemption" to keep their children from being vaccinated.
Dr. Harvey Karp, a child development specialist and assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Southern California, tells NPR 75 to 90 percent of whooping cough cases are seen in teenagers and adults.
The disease is not particularly deadly in these older populations. However, Karp adds, many of the patients have lower immunities because people have not been diligent about getting booster shots.
This makes them vulnerable to the disease, which, in turn, they risk passing on to infants.
Booster shots for whooping cough and other maladies are available for adults, but many adults are unaware they should get booster shots every 10 years, NPR reports.
"Doctors -- especially pediatricians -- aren't doing a good enough job," Karp tells NPR. "When you go into the doctor's office for your child's care, your pediatrician should be telling you that you should be getting immunized as well."

Make sure you teach them to wash their hands and not cough on other people or things. I've worked in pediatric doctor's offices and got very diligent about taking my vitamins. Plus, I not only noticed parents not telling their children to cover their cough, but coughing on me themselves.

They sneak in here without immunizations and carrying diseases. If they came here legally they could not be sick and must be immunized. Stop illegals and cut back on old diseases that were no longer prevelent in this country.

I personally know many people whose children were injured by vaccines. I also know many more people whose children have had these diseases after being properly vaccinated. 3 children out of 20 in my child's class got chicken pox last year. All 3 were vaccinated. Look up the graphs on Polio. The disease decreased by around 75% the year the vaccine was invented. The only problem was that it wasn't introduced to the public till after the decline. The measles outbreaks that keep happening at the colleges, over 70% were vaccinated. It's a proven fact that the false immunity provided by the vaccines (if it is successful at all) doesn't last for more than 5-10 years, depending on the vaccine.
People should do their research before judging others.

justyn said...the number of people who died in 2001 from whooping cough...17(found on wikipedia).
the number of people who died in 2001 from cancer.... 1 in 4 Americans 16,047 in NC alone
the number of people who died in 2001 from DUI accidents....17,448
(all these numbers can be found on links they wouldn't let me put in the post)
while I am in no way saying these whooping cough deaths are OK since there are only 17, I am saying that there are LOTS of things that kill people everyday. why do we focus on a sickness that is rarely deadly versus DUI which is nearly always deadly for someone? and insist on vaccination? i think keeping people from being unhealthy in general should be focused on. washing hands, staying home when ill and eating right and keeping fit. vaccination is the 'simple' fix all solution this country has adopted, rather than dealing with it the right way. i am not simply against immunizations because i am ignorant, i am FOR keeping healthy and not needing them. very rarely do healthy people get sick. immunizations should only be used for those with weak immune systems or unstable immune systems, they should not be the norm. and medications should only be used when needed. not everytime you have a runny nose.

Lisa said...My kid cannot get vaccines. Well, I guess she could, but they won't do any good. She has been through cancer treatment for over 2 years and the stem cell transplants wiped out all of her vaccinations. Because of all the treatment her body has gone through vaccines will not work. We have to rely on "herd mentality" to keep her safe from things like whooping cough. We NEED other families to vaccinate their children, so our child does not get these things. "Simple" things like the chicken pox will land us in the hospital (not just home on the couch) for 2-3 weeks. Yeah, only 17 kids died, but if one of them was mine, and it was your unvaccinated kid who passed it to her I would never forgive you for killing my child, when a simple shot could have prevented the whole thing. Please remember those who can't help themselves.

Maggz129 said...I agree with you completely about people minding their own business. I chose not to poison my children with genetically altered diseases and chemicals. I don't judge the parents who do it, believing it is the right thing for their children. They shouldn't judge me.
I also wanted to add that some of these diseases only continue to exist because the scientists keep them for vaccines. For years, the only cases of Polio in the US were people that contracted it from babies who had recently been vaccinated.

Pnapolichi said...First of all, vaccines are NOT safe for everyone. My children and my nieces and nephews have had serious reactions to vaccines. We stopped getting them.
I am not anti-vaccine. They are great in principle but you have to think for yourself. Think about it. There is not one other drug that is given in the same amount to everyone like vaccines are. Tylenol is even different in dosage based on size or age.
A test needs to be developed to test a family's DNA with vaccines to determine if any any reactions will occur. I am tired of my family are just considered "casualities" to mass given vaccines.

BETSY SNOW said...Wow, I never realized how much we protected the younger generations until now. I grew up when there was only asprin and penicillin to treat illnesses. There were thousands of people (children) with the end results of polio, crippled and in pain for the rest of their lives. They were the lucky ones, they lived, they survived. It was their generation that found the cure for polio, so that the rest of us would not have to go through what they and thier families did. The next thing I remember at the age of 5 was getting the whooping cough. There weren't just a few that died from it, there the hundreds. I remember that my brother and sister also had it at the same time as I did. They were up and about in a couple of weeks, it took me from Sept. (it was my first year of school and I missed most of it) until the ene of Jan. of the following year before I was allowed out of bed. I developed pneumonia and if it hadn't been for the Dr. coming to our house every day to give me a penicillin shot I would not have survived. A cure was found for that so that others would not die. Next comes the measles, mumps, chickenpoxs and any other disease that a person could get. Most of us survived, we lived and helped to find the cures for these diseases. Most who are under the age of 50 or so don't remember these diseases because of the cures, perhaps if they get out the books and start doing some reading on the history of this nation and the battles that have been won around the world they wouldn't be so **** (I don't know of a good word for here), I just have a hard time imagining that anyone would take a risk with thier childs life. Our ancestors worked so hard to protect everyone, the cures were shared world wide. They didn't have time to point fingers at who caused or carried the disease, they worked as a team to find the cure. The cure is here, now, use it to protect the world.

Please peruse the other comments; there's some interesting information related to the diseases including statistics.
Each of us selects the information we pass on; so, why only read what supports your position. More importantly, is our willingness to research the data and discern what is a red herring and which facts credibly support each side of the "argument". It could be that the combination of data and facts from eacy sides are "true" ~ then what?
Be reasonable
