Can I Name a Baby Charlotte in Charlotte?
Filed under: Baby Names, Expert Advice: Pregnancy
I'm a first-time mom pregnant with a daughter. Our absolute favorite name is Charlotte. It's just so beautiful! Here's the catch. We live in North Carolina. Charlotte is the largest and most well-known city in our state. Is it out for us?

There's no simple rule for how a place name plays to people from that place. Some city names sound silly on babies to the locals, whereas others sound extra-appealing. And still others just sound like, well, names.
On one end of the spectrum, take Brooklyn. Brooklyn is the 37th most popular girl's name in the U.S. The closer you get to Brooklyn, N.Y., though, the less popular it gets. In New York State and New Jersey, the name has never cracked the top 100. Brooklyn-the-borough has such a powerful image there that namers stay away from it. But far from the Big Apple, where Brooklyn has less daily reality, the pretty sound and vaguely big-city edge make the name extremely popular -- it's top 10 in Utah and South Dakota.
At the other extreme, Savannah is more popular in Georgia than in the U.S. overall. Virginia the name was for several years most popular in the state of Virginia, and Caroline remains especially hot in the Carolinas. (Want to explore this on your own? Try the BabyNameWizard.com NameMapper tool.)
Part of the calculation is whether the image of the place fits the name's style. Brooklyn, N.Y., is many fine things, but sweet and girlish don't top the list. Savannah, in contrast, is just right for Savannah, Georgia's southern charm. In fact, the portrait of the city of Savannah in the book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" helped make the baby name popular.
Another factor is the name's associations beyond the place. This is where Charlotte really shines. It's a classic girl's name, linked to centuries of culture from Charlotte Brontë to "Charlotte's Web" to the "Charlotte of Sex and the City." Even a city as strong as Charlotte, N.C., can't dominate the name. As a result, Charlotte remains quite popular in your state. So go ahead and give your child the beautiful gift of your "absolute favorite name." Your fellow North Carolinians should welcome her with open arms.

Crystal said...Dear NC Mom,
I, too am a NC Mom. I couldn't help but read your question after the beautiful name "Charlotte" caught my eye. I live in a county right next to Charlotte, NC and we are in the city often. I think the name more closly reminds me of a gorgeous, historic name rather than a city. I see no reason NOT to name your daughter Charlotte. And congratulations and best wishes for your family and hopefully, your daughter, Charlotte!

nola said...I agree, It is a beautiful name. My daughter named her first child Brea,,Sounds like( Braya) They lived in Brea California and then there are the Brea Tar Pits LOL But is still a very nice name. So I think if it sounds pretty or nice in the case of a male name, then go for it.

carol said...Good Grief!! What a completely stupid article. Why in the world
would anyone think that they couldn't use the name of the city
in which they live (if it is an appropriate name) to name their child?
Charlotte is a very normal, beautiful southern name . Some people
have too much time on their hands so they conjour up really dumb
ideas and questions.

My question to you? Why do you care so much?????????????
Smile, life is too short to be a grouchy old poster :)

lily said...You might think its a stupid question but your answer was just as stupid if not more so. You have too much time on your hands if you felt it necassary to speak out about someone elses questions. Why not make better use of your time and think about why youre so nasty and judgmental. Maybe you can change your ways and be a nicer happier person.

Katie said...I agree, Carol. What the article really begs is have the current generations gotten so stupid that they have to ask something like this? Here it is, in little bites: Lots of 'places' have 'people' names, boys and girls. If you like a traditional name like Charlotte, I doubt anyone will ask you if it's because you like the name or that you wanted to name your child after a place, even though you live in North Carolina. Surely the populace there hasn't embraced the notion that Charlotte is only a place name since a place in NC is called Charlotte. (Charlotte as a people name is older than Charlotte as a place name, boys and girls). ;)
Our youth can barely think for themselves. Before anyone calls me a hater, etc., I just consider it my responsibility, as a dinosaur, to attack and stomp out stupidity at the root whenever I see it.
Have a good evening, boys and girls! Miss Common Sense signing out!

leeann said...Yeah, I know Carol, I get it. What would she do if the answer was, "No, you absolutely cannot name your baby that" ? If she feels she needs permission from a total stranger on what she can and cannot name her baby then that baby is in for a real treat of a mom.

Kyoteee said...What parents name a child will last forever. Trying to be 'cute' or (worse) 'pretend-ethnic' or (even worse) using 8 random Scrabble letters will always be detrimental to that child. Kids tease over little things all the time but if another kid has a silly name like "Charylettae" or "J'Kan'Tesh'-ickyee" then that child will be targeted by other kids and adults when they try to make friends, get a job, find a mate, etc. Of course, if the child has at least twice the number of working brain cells than his/her parents put together, they will probably, sensibly, change their name in adulthood to something they can be proud of. Why make a child suffer endlessly because their parents were incredibly stupid?
