10 Great Styles for the Back-to-School Set

Yeah, yeah, folders, pens, calculators, rulers. Whatever, Mom. But back-to-school clothes? Now, there's something a lot of kids will suffer through a shopping trip to the mall for.
And, this year, Debbie Barrett, children's trend manager for JCPenney, tells ParentDish the trendiest item out there is skinny jeans.
"That goes for boys and girls, in denim and in the colored denim 5-pocket styles," she says. "That actually caught a lot of people off guard, as to how big it became."
Barrett says parents on a budget can make their fashion lists simple. For boys, she says, grab a couple polo shirts, graphic T-shirts, skinny jeans and plaid shorts.
"That would get you plenty of wear because you can layer the pieces and can separate them or put them together," she says.
Parents of girls can add leggings and a cami or ribbed tank top to the mix.
"They're key," Barrett says, "and can be worn alone or layered with a T-shirt or a woven shirt."
Jenny Cooper, head designer for J. Crew's Crewcuts line, says back-to-school fashions for 2010 are all about comfort -- and finding styles that transition well from summer into fall.
"For boys, graphic tees work all year round, as does the perfect pair of selvedge denim," Cooper says. "... And a navy heather sweatshirt with a printed white stripe is everybody's favorite. For girls, I feel like they're getting so good at layering and inventing their own fashion -- I've seen dresses worn so many different ways, with pants, with a long sleeve underneath. I think you can buy what you love and morph it for the seasons. Dresses do that particularly well."
Here's a look at some of our fave school-worthy styles that make the fashion grade.
