Pediatricians Call for a Limit on Tobacco and Alcohol Ads

In a new policy statement, "Children, Adolescents, Substance Abuse and the Media", published in Pediatrics, the AAP calls for a ban on tobacco advertising in all media, including electronic; limitations on alcohol advertising and shielding young children from substance-related content on television and in movies.
More than $25 billion is spent every year on advertising for alcohol, tobacco and prescription drugs -- money that has been shown to be effectively spent, the statement says. While illegal drugs are always a concern, alcohol and tobacco present an even greater danger to children and teenager because they're the first ones kids try and are gateway drugs, according to the statement.
A preadolescent or adolescent who smokes or drinks is 65 percent more likely to smoke pot than a child who doesn't, the article states, and the younger a child starts experimenting with substances, the greater the risk of serious problems. Every year 5,000 kids under the age of 21 die from excessive drinking, according to the article.
Parents have a role to play as well, the statement warns, urging parents to "exercise extreme caution" in letting younger children watch PG-13 and R-rated movies or adult-themed TV shows because they often show substance abuse. Exposure to more mature programming at an early age may be a "major factor" in kids starting to smoke and drink in adolescence, the paper says.
The article also recommends that advertising and media be discussed in substance abuse-prevention programs. It also calls on pediatricians to encourage parents to limit unsupervised media and "especially encourage removal of televisions from children's bedrooms." Having a television in the bedroom is associated with greater substance abuse and sexual activity for teenagers, the article says.
Pediatricians should also urge parents to limit children and young adolescents' access to channels that show a lot of substance abuse, such as MTV, Comedy Central and HBO, and to watch television and other media along with their children and teenagers and discuss what they see. They should also encourage parents to turn the television off during evening meals, the article states.

Kira said...How about is parents just get off their asses and take their children outside to play instead of letting them sit in front of the TV all day being lazy? Then you wouldn't have to worry about them seeing these ads.

wowsham said...I agree with Kira. Also it has been proven that the more open a country is about sex and alcohol, the less violent crimes there are. The more we remove the worse society will act. Take prohibition for example, not only were people still getting drinks, there was a gigantic increase in crime rate as well.

It is quite embarassing to be enjoying a football or baseball game on tv with my boyfriend, and have a "feminine" commercial pop up. I'm toally sure that some of them make him uncomfortable also. If the subject is going to be talked about, do it in a straightforward mature manner. That includes the AXE commercial for "how to wash your balls>"

wowsham said...but who the hell wants to have a sad period? Also, as for seeing it during a game or whatever, there is an option to, I kid you not, change the channel. The remote control is a magical object that gives us the ability to choose what we watch on the television. Who could have thought? What is also funny are the commercials for PADS AND TAMPONS (grow up people that's what they are called) that make fun of the ultra feminine commercial for such products. And to finish, axe is the worst smelling material on earth, it is like black death in a can and makes you less attractive.

They have made it through their teen years without becoming smokers, drug addicts, of alcoholics. Yes I'm sure they have tried it like all children but I don't think that the movies they watched when they were younger was as huge a contributing factor in their lives. I think it has more to do with the values at home and the company they keep outside of the home.

Gary Wilkes said...Seeing something doesn't "cause" behavior. If so, you'd have to ban television news. How come people smoke marijuana? They never saw it in an ad. Same thing with bank robbery. Worse, you are taking the advice of pediatricians who have no academic or professional qualificiations to speak about behavior modification of masses of people. That's like asking your chiropractor about prescription drugs just because he's a "doctor." So, let's see their children and find out if pediatricians can actually raise a child properly before you take their advice. In case any of them haven't noticed, there are no TV ads for cigarettes and it hasn't stopped the behavior.

Nancy said...Did you really ask that question? The govt. outlawed alcohol at one time and look what happened. Also, do you have any idea how big the tobacco industry is? The tobacco farms, plants, advertising industry, etc. How many people are employed through the tobacco industry and its subsidiaryies. The drug companies that supply the chemicals added to tobacco in cigarettes; the paper industry, whoever makes the filters, etc. Then those people become unemployed and are on food stamps, welfare, medicaid and MORE problems. So we try to teach people that paying all that money to look bad, smell bad, taste bad, get sick and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to die in so much pain from cancer and emphysema is just plain stupid.

Take personal responsibility for your own choices and stop doing things that cause your body -- and the body of those around you -- harm.
