Bow Hunter, 17, Bags 448-Pound Bear

How about hunting bear with a bow and arrow?
This summer, Jessica Olmstead killed a 448-pound black bear while on a hunting trip in Ontario, Canada with her dad, according to the Battle Creek Enquirer.
The bear was the first animal the teen, who lives in Battle Creek, Mich., and is a senior at Harper Creek High School, has killed with a bow, the newspaper reports.
Jeff Folsom, publisher of Bear Hunting Magazine, tells ParentDish he had not heard about Olmstead's feat, but says he wasn't surprised by the news. There are "lots of women (and) girls that are into (hunting bear)," he says, adding that the next issue of his magazine will include "pictures of two girls under 16 with their bears."
Folsom may not have been shocked to hear about a teenage female bear hunter, but he was impressed Olmstead used a bow.
Bow hunting is "more difficult, more challenging" than hunting with a gun, he says. "You have to be so much more precise and accurate. There's a lot more things you have to do than take your safety off the gun and squeeze the trigger."
It's also more dangerous, Folsom says.
"You've got to be up close and personal," he says.
The average bow shot is made between 17 and 22 yards from your target, whereas, with a gun you can be as much as 60 yards away, Folsom says.
With a bear to be in that close of range, bow hunting is not for the faint of heart.
"There's a lot of people that just freeze," Folsom says, describing a typical bear hunting scenario. "There's a bear 20 yards (away, and) you've got to pull your bow back ... To hold it all together, and focus and make the shot, it's a cool thing."
Tim Olmstead, the girl's father, tells the Enquirer his daughter is a "natural at this sport," but Folsom says it takes a lot of practice to be able to handle a bow well enough to take down a bear.
"You can't just pick up a bow (and shoot)," he says. "Most states have a 45-pound draw weight minimum, (which) means you're pulling back 45 pounds."
Folsom says his personal bow is between 65 and 70 pounds, and an inexperienced archer would be lucky to come close to hitting a target -- that is, if they could manage to pull the bow back and take aim.
And while most communities probably have more girls on the gymnastics team than they do in the woods looking for wild animals, hunting can be very good exercise.
"Depending on the type of hunting you're doing, it can be real physical," Folsom says. Sometimes "you do more in a day than any football player does in training camp."
The Enquirer says the teen "currently holds the Pope and Young Bowhunting record for the trophy bear," which Folsom calls "the record book for archers."
Pope and Young's Glenn Hisey tells ParentDish the group did not yet have a record on the books for Olmstead, adding that bears are ranked "by length of skull plus width of skull" and hunters need to wait 60 days after they bag their animal before having a measurement done. Since Olmstead shot her bear in mid-August, that time has not yet passed.
Still, it would seem that Olmstead has begun her hunting career with, well, a bang. A 448-pound bear is "a very nice bear," Folsom tells ParentDish. "There's people that have hunted for 20 years and have never shot (one) that size."

Kinda like how Jeffrey Dahmer, Joel Rifkin, Tex Watkins, Jack the Ripper felt when they committed their "kills". I always say that if hunters didn't have these animals to get their rocks off by killing and destroying them, then they'd probably resort to being serial killers. You musta had a sick father just like the girl in this article. Obviously she's not able on her own, or strong enough to comprehend what a violent disgusting sport this is. Nowhere in the article did they say they were hunting for meat. They only talked about how big the skull is and if she'd get in the record books for this. And for all you "parrots" saying "It's good for animal population"...gee, hmm, we have human overpopulation...what do you suggest we do, Dahmer?

Mel, how could you possibly know that?
She grew up In Michigan, one of the biggest hunting States in the Union. I'm sure she's well aware of what she has done.
Personally I don't hunt but I'm not going to knock those who do. Who am I to judge?

GO JOHN GO said...Mel,
I posted my response to irritate people like you. How do you know how those people, of whom you speak, felt when they committed their "kills"? You don't you are just another person who does not like hunting or killing animals. Do you eat, meat or vegetables? if you eat either you are killing living things. That makes you along with a lot of other people that want to trash this young lady a hypocrite. She probably can comprehend a lot more at her young age than you ever will be able to.
By the way no where in the article did it dismiss the idea she was hunting for food. So again, as with the serial killers, you are just guessing.
In reference to your overpopulation comment, It is too late for your parents to do this but maybe you can. Use a condom when you have sex, that will stop the spread of your genes. Therefore the human race will be improved. Thanks.

To kill a living thing that probably had cubs and a family of its own, for fun and sport is beyond disgusting. Not to mention the fact that parentdish permitted graphics that included a picture of the actual dead bear. It truly makes me sick how ignorant people can be. 'Jessica Olmstead' has nothing to be proud about. Karma will come around.

honeykeet said...From the things that some of you are saying, you are obviously not familiar with reality of hunting. Hunting is a sport. It is also a way of life. Just like being a vegetarian. You choose to eat vegetable that have "in no way harmed you" you vegetable murderers. Remember, most animals that are hunted (by the way, people eat meat) are not used for 'just sport' the meat is harvested. And eaten. There are rules and regulations to hunt. These are in place to protect animals as well as people. You have to have permits to hunt many animals. Which is completely fair. It also keeps the animal population from overrunning everything else. I hunt every year. I have harvested a deer. My family hunts. We harvested 2 wild boars this year. Perfectly legal. There were plenty of them left out there too. Yes, there are hunters out there who may not harvest appropriately, or kill out of season...these are called poachers. The majority of legal hunters do things the right way. So please, respect us and our way of life too. This is a family tradition. An American tradition. A human tradition.

It has extreemly little fat if any at all and alot of people eat wild meat because of that very thing. Some enjoy it more than beef or fish or pork, chicken.....ect. This young lady and her father, I bet my last dollar, love to eat bear. And other wild game meat. Unless you know for sure about your comments, don't pass judgement! And unless you are a vegitarian or P.E.T.A supporter, probably don't even know what that accronim means, Than keep your pie hole shut. By the way, P.E.T.A. stands for: People Eating Tasty Animals :)
