Specialists in glands and hormones have noticed an alarming increase in girls as young as 6 or 7 showing signs of puberty, according to a new study conducted through the Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Centers, established in 2003 by the National Institute of Environmental Health Science and the National Cancer Institute.
That means the trek to the bra store and the pressure to cover those little bumps may be mounting earlier than you anticipated. The new study reported in the journal Pediatrics found that very young girls are showing protrusions from their chests earlier than ever before, increasing their risk of breast cancer and other health problems, as well as taunts from boys, says Frank Biro, M.D., director of adolescent medicine at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the study's lead author, in a release.
The study found that the proportion of girls who had breast development at ages 7 and 8, particularly among white girls, is greater than that reported from studies of girls who were born 10 to 30 years earlier, according to the release. At age 7, 10 percent of white girls, 23 percent of black girls and 15 percent of Hispanic girls had evidence of breast development.
The issue is of concern, Biro says in the release, for both medical and psychosocial reasons. Studies suggest that earlier puberty, as measured by the age a girl is at first menstruation, can slightly increase the risk of breast cancer.
"What causes earlier onset of puberty isn't entirely clear at this time, but we are looking closely at several different potential factors, including genes and environmental exposures, as well as how those two may interact with each other," Biro says.
Overweight girls were more likely to have more breast development, the study shows. But Biro says he does not think weight is the whole story. He adds in the release that it is possible environmental chemicals are also playing a role, and that future research will examine girls' hormone levels and their exposure to various chemicals.
What the study means for retailers, who have come under fire for offering over-sexualized clothing to kids, remains to be seen. Last April, a survey by the Guardian.co.uk, found an array of items available in major chains, from a T-shirt for a 3-year-old bearing the slogan "Future WAG" to a top for a toddler with a pink bikini appliquéd on the front.
The Guardian's report prompted British retailer Primark to remove its line of padded bras for little girls, according to TheAge.com.

Do you know why people write in ALL CAPITALS?
Think about this Alicia......
NOT ALL OF US CAN SEE WELL.........CAPS ARE BIGGER! I CAN READ THE POSTS EASIER. I AM ALMOST BLIND!!!!!!!!!!
WHO ARE YOU OR ANYONE ELSE TO TELL ME WHAT TYPE OF WRITING I DO!?
HAVE YOU NO COMPASSION FOR THE "HARD OF SEEING'?
It's not rude, Alicia, and others who feel this way. Someone once told me that writing in all CAPS is tatamount to screaming.
Excuse me, I don't hear any screaming.
I DO APPRECIATE WRITING IN CAPS SO I CAN READ IT BETTER IS ALL, ALICIA!
DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!

Coop said...Karen - Actually, it IS considered rude, equivalent to screaming, on these sorts of forums to use all caps. The reason they have capital and lower case letters is to make sentences easier to read, so your argument that all caps is easier to see is a dubious one. (For one thing, are you writing your posts for others to read or for yourself?) Anyway, if you truly have a hard time reading posts, try holding down the Control key while using the scroll wheel on your mouse - by doing this, you can "zoom" in on webpages to read them more easily (I think Ctrl and the + key will do the same thing).

PAULINE said...This doesn't surprise me at all because there are so many problems with our food. Our meats are loaded with hormones and our vegetables are sprayed with pesticides. Let us consider the beef industry. Cows do not eat corn! Should I repeat that! Cows do not eat corn. Our children are smart enough to know that. Have you ever saw a child draw a cow in a cornfield? Cows eat grass, but they are given corn to fatten them up for mass production. We can thank our fast food industry for that. Now consider the milk that sits innocently in the refrigerated section of our markets. Can we say BGH. Come on let's say it together, shout it out, and don't be shy. Bovine Growth Hormones! It is in our milk, once again, it's for mass production purposes. How about the chicken that we eat. Do you want me to go there? Antibiotics, what is up with that. I didn't know that hens and chickens got sick which requires antibiotics. Actually, I did know, but it isn't their fault. If you were couped up in cramped spaces with a thousand other people, you would need antibiotics too, especially if there's no proper ventilation. Those little guys and gals deserve air, sun, and plenty of room to move around. If mass production wasn't the problem once again, our chickens and hens would live in more humane conditions. Where do we go from here? Oh yeah artificial flavors, preservatives, msg, high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, hydrogenated oils, dyes, and other names you can't pronounce or spell. So why are we questioning why our girls are getting breast at a young age. Please don't leave out the man boobs either because my sons brought that to my attention. My final thoughts are where oh where is the FDA and the USDA gone. Oh where oh where can they be? No where that's where they are. What happened to regulation? What happened to support our local farmers? What happened to truly making sure that our foods are homegrown with pure and natural ingredients that this great earth is capable of reproducing. I guess I'm a dreamer. I guess I'm expecting too much. I guess I am asking for too much. Actually I'm not and neither should you! Protest, Protest, Protest. That is the solution because this is harming our children and our families. Obesity, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, and all of the other diseases that's related to what we eat and breathe. Awareness and education is the key to prevent some of these problems. We really don't have to eat this garbage because we still have the power of choice to buy and eat healthy.

Coop said...Pauline, I pretty much agree with you, but I have to point out that the reason you don't see cows in cornfields is mostly because grain (corn) farmers don't want cows eating their crops, not necessarily because cows don't like corn. Also, cows would be hard to see in a cornfield. Corn generally grows about 8 feet tall. An average cow is just over half that height.

A friend of mines daughter had this problem, she switched to organic milk (as well as other foods) and within 1 year (things take time) her pediatrition said all signs of early development had resolved.

We are so overpopulated that we cannot wait for a chick to become a hen naturally, so we introduce growth hormones to make that chick go from hatchling to frying pan in 90 days as a necessity. Add to that we keep bulldozing our farms for housing and before you know it our food supply is in even greater jeopardy. Wanna fix the problem: 2 kids per person for 20 years; any more and they ALL will pay the price.

Its disgusting how these corporations want to save a buck by inhancing our food supply. Half the items we eat are all corn based. This is horrible and will only get worse!

Richard Pawley said...Sorry, but 7 and 8 year old girls becoming sexually mature is as unnatural as the food they eat! In most of the western world, from Italy to New Zealand and from France to Australia artificial bovine hormones are illegal (given to cows to make them give more milk), but it's good enough for Americans...I drive 44 miles to buy milk free of this crap. Canada even made it illegal because of what it does TO THE COWS! Is the meat these children eat organic? If not it's full of hormones that fatten up the beef and hogs that most eat and is likely a contributing factor. Equally bad, is the fact that 70 percent of anti-biotics in this country are fed to beef and hogs to add more weight to them. This is even polluting their manure so it can't be used in organic gardening! Additionally about 90% of the corn, soy, and beet sugar in the USA is genetically modified, something neither God nor nature ever intended and something the government hides from the citizenry, whereas in other countries they are given a choice and told about this. On top of that the government requires triple the vaccines for childred than it did just 25 years ago, and of course it's just a mere coincidence that the number of chronically ill and disabled children has tripled in the same time span. And then there are the 15 medical czars that the Socialist-Democrats appointed to administer the new health care plan (those who will decide what treatment the doctors will give you IF if it is cost effective). Their names were released over the weekend. They or their staff will decide if your life or your child's is worth saving. Is it any wonder that thousands of doctors are planning to leave the country or change their profession as this new improved health care goes into effect? My mom died last month at 92 and she often said to me, "Aren't you glad you never had any children who have to grow up in what the USA is becoming?" At least she doesn't have to see how congress is destroying our children and our country. Oh, yes, this is all so mysterious!

Different strokes for different folks ya know - slap one women and she gets excited slap another and they get mad. Joke people don't get excited. As for caps or not who CARES. LOL - if that is all you have to do is complain about anything this minor maybe you should get out side, get a life and DO SOMETHING. Get a life, get along and enjoy. Caps or NOT who Cares. BIG deal OUT of NOTHING. Could you still read that - you could – then be happy about that fact not the way it is typed. Think of the people that would love to be able to just see the words, or those that would like to be able to read the words they see. Your lucky in life if your reading this be grateful and pass off the petty. Tracker

Cindy said...My youngest daughter started developing breasts at 5 years old, and started her period at 7. We took her to the pediatrician who ordered a battery of tests. After many tests and many visits to different specialists, they concluded that it was the hormones that are fed to chickens and cows. My daughter was not overweight and was considered to be in the normal weight/height ratio for her age. Because of her early puberty, she stopped growing at age 12 and now stands at barely 5 feet tall. She is now 16, The early puberty has also caused her to have some emotional problems that we did not experience with our older two daughters.

It is possible that the early development of reproductive organs is a telltale sign of the new problems the remnants will have after the war. After devastating wars male birthrates usually go up. Anybody managed to explain this yet?

Karen.......You know...... I have often wondered the same thing as I'm sure others have as well. I think what has happened is some just didn't like the font, caps, or whatever you wish to call it, and it simply just started from there. From there, like a bunch of sheep people jumped in (which is a same way a fad gets started) using the same verbage as the one they heard it from such as the word "scream", which I tend to agree with you makes no sense to me.

The filly had horrific cramps which led to colic every month which she did outgrow in a year. The vets call it cystic ovaries. The research shows the cystic ovaries are caused more from chemicals in the air. I say it is caused by good food, growing well and faster. The filly was always very well developed for her age. I think the same is true for human children. No starving kids in our society. No one is without food. The growth charts are bigger and bigger until lately it seems we are growing shorter as a nation because of all the illegal immigration. So, our gene pool is shorter now but fatter. Just a condition of TOO MUCH FOOD and not enough lean years.
