You have to be 18 years old to vote, but some parents think that it's never too early to start talking politics with their children. There are numerous politically-themed children's books for kids available for all political stripes, like "Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed!" for the right-wing rugrats and "Why Mommy is a Democrat" for the little ones on the left. (For something a tad more subtle, try Dr. Seuss' classics "The Lorax" and "The Butter Battle Book.")
How about you? Do you discuss politics with your kids?

Alicia said...I don't have kids and my parents never discussed politics while they were together because dad's a die-hard Limbaugh fan and mom's a Dem. However, when they split, my mom encouraged me to do my own research and form my own decisions and did her best to explain things as neutrally as possible. To my dad's (loud, angry, judgmental) disappointment, I turned into a left-wing activist more liberal than my mother ever dreamed of being and more passionate about politics than he is. I don't think parents should try to sway children (my dad tried for years and almost destroyed our relationship because I refused to change my mind so he'd switch to personal attacks) but I think parents should educate (or encourage older kids to educate themselves) on issues and politics and support them no matter what side of the aisle they end up on.
