While no one is rejoicing over a recent, devastating spate of teen suicides related to bullying and homophobia, out of the ashes has come an openness and vulnerability rarely seen in our society. Take this powerful and moving video from Joel Burns, an openly gay city councilman in Fort Worth, Texas.
His personal narrative about growing up gay in America and the pain it caused him defies our ability to summarize it in a few pithy words. Instead, we ask you to watch -- and listen. The next time you find yourself with a homophobic slur on the tip of your tongue, remember the tears of a grown man recalling the pain that still lingers, all these many years later.
