Women-Only Swim Hour for Muslims Makes Waves on Campus

In an attempt to be inclusive to all religious traditions on campus, last week George Washington University started "Sisters' Splash," a ladies-only swim hour, according to the university newspaper, The GW Hatchet. The school's Lerner Health and Wellness Center closed the pool to men and covered the glass door with a dark tarp, giving female Muslim students the chance to swim at their leisure, while honoring the basic tenets of their religion.
Everything was going swimmingly, and coeds shed their head and body gear and rocked swimsuits, at least until scores of critics began hurling heated comments that continue to pour in on various blogs and news reports, according to the journal Inside Higher Education.
"Should a minuscule minority force the overwhelming majority to abide by their rules or should it be the other way around?" is one of the Internet comments about the female-only swim, the journal reports.
Others include: "Come on, folks. An hour a week -- what's the big deal?" "It's not an unreasonable request. 'Women' is like *half* the population."
Because George Washington is a private university, there should be no constitutional issues with the swim hour, Ayesha N. Khan, legal director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, tells Inside Higher Education.
"Should a similar program start up at a public university, the presence of church-state issues would depend on the many facts of the situation, such as whether access is religion-specific," Khan tells the journal.
Aliya Karim, social chair of the Muslim Students' Association (MSA) women's group, tells the student newspaper the organization made the effort to coordinate the swimming hour so fellow Muslims would feel comfortable in the pool.
"Personally, I would only want to go when just girls are there," Karim, who is also a Hatchet photographer, tells the newspaper.
Rahiba Noor, a junior who serves as the community service chair of the MSA, tells the newspaper that, prior to attending GW, swimming laps at a private pool was an important part of her health regimen. At school, however, Noor tells the student newspaper she's resigned herself to staying away from the water and using a treadmill.
"Religious values always define us," Noor tells the newspaper. "Although I wouldn't really mind, it would be satisfying to me religiously to swim only with girls."
For some Muslims, being in public without a hijab puts them at odds with fundamental aspects of Islam.
Valdez Williams, the operations manager of the gym, tells the newspaper the university helped the MSA coordinate the weekly swim hour because GW wanted to make the girls feel comfortable.
"At GW, we try to take care of all of our students," Williams tells the Hatchet. "As long as it's requested and works within our policies and procedures, we will generally accommodate them."
Williams says the university will try to schedule one hour each week for the female students to have private access.
"The girls should be able to swim here," Williams says. "We will not penalize them because of their religious beliefs."

I'm sure I will get some bullsh*t comments on this but as you can see by my screen name, "I live in my own world" because there is too much criticism going on in THE world we live in. And yes, I am an American. Born and raised here. Religion is just that. Who we believe in shouldn't make a difference. If you were raised within a different religion, or this one to be exact, you wouldn't have a problem with it. "Nuf said."

Gee said...Except, those other religions don't have the same set of dress requirements. I clearly remember having no meat served in public school cafeteria during Lent although Catholics were certainly not the majority. And here in NYC parking rules are suspended for major religious holidays of all faiths. It's called America: E Pluribus Unum. Being kind and considerate of the beliefs and cultural habits of others is called fair and intelligent.

Karen said...They didn't say Muslim hour, it is women's swim hour and i am sure there are other women who appreciate a time to swim without men around, so they all win. And as such if you want a men's hour only I'm sure the school would provide that as well. But just because the Muslim students are the ones mentioned to benefit, does not make this a religious issue.

That's the whole problem is you start giving in to these people and before you know it, they will want more and more. Stop it now before it is too late. Those stinking people can just stay on their side of the world. I don't trust a single one nor do I care what happens to any of them until the ones that keep saying they are not like the terrorists stand up together and claim that to the world wide media, none of them are to be trusted. They should all be rounded up and sent packing. I bet if you looked, you would find that the ancestors of our founding fathers fought islam in the Crusades. This country was founded on freedom of christianity, not freedom of religion.

That is what our country stands for and if we can't pray in our Schools anymore and we can't tell Our President to put his hand over his heart during the National Anthem - SIMPLY if they don't like it - move back to your war stricken land and stop invading ours. We are all of the same human race - not one is superior than the other. We have uniforms than they should all require to wear the same uniform. I am sick to my stomach to all the bull that one specific religion demands from our country. ENOUGH - move .. let's start a fund to help those that don't want to fit in to the free world and send them back where they can't get in a swimming pool , eat as a family because men have to be on one side and women on the other.... PLEASE we will start that FUNDRAISER if they need it...

they are not done with us yet-when did you hear a baptist,a jew,a catholic,a morman or buhdist ever promise death to america and have already started the process

Jerry Dennis said...It wouldn't work, Ron. There are only 168 hours in a week and probably over 200 "victim" groups that would demand their one hour a week. Sad, isn't it. Maybe Rodney King had it right when he said, "Can't we all just get along?"

Max Spencer said...If Muslims were allowed to have a stupid mosque, to quote Rob, they would have their own pool and could swim whenever they want and follow their own rules. So, Rob, what will it be? Mosque or no mosque, Mr. Rob. If not, why not. Your reason makes no sense.

Some Jewish / Christian demonations have very similar and conservative beliefs. BTW--you really come across as an uneducated loudmouth. Try some punctuation instead of all caps, easier to read and shows a level of intelligence

If you are a Christian and a true follower of Christ, you would have to ask yourself,"What would Jesus do?" We are not here to judge anyone.
The Judging will be done for all of us one day.
This is such a small request. Why all the drama ?
Let these woman swim.
Prejudice of race or religion is based on ignorance.
Before the Muslims, everything bad that happened was the fault of the blacks.
Educate yourself...then pray for compassion. We have to stop promoting hate and learn to respect one another.

If these muslims come to America, and become AMERICAN citizens, then they should leave their burkas, and their head-wear, and their muslim traditions AT HOME! I don't suppose I could be granted the same demands in say...Iraq or Iran, or Libya, or Afghanistan?
