When the Duggars, one of America's most beloved supersized families, expands, the news is well, huge.
Today Josh Duggar and his wife Anna announced that they are expecting their second child. The young couple stars with Josh's parents, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, and his 18 siblings, on TLC's reality show "19 Kids and Counting."
Josh and Anna chatted with ParentDish about their big news. Also, check out TLC's "19 Kids and Counting: GrandDuggar First Birthday" this Sunday at 8 pm EST/7 pm CT.
ParentDish: Congratulations on your big announcement! How far along are you, Anna?
Anna Duggar: Ten weeks.
PD: What made you decide to share the news so early on?
AD: When you have good news, it's hard to keep it in!
PD: Josh, since you and your 18 siblings all have names that start with "J," are you going to continue the tradition and give your kids "M" names like your daughter Mackynzie?
Josh Duggar: Everybody asks us that, but we're not sure. We'll have to wait and see what happens after we have an ultrasound to find out if we're having a boy or a girl.
PD: You just celebrated Mackynzie's birthday, which will air this Sunday on TLC's "19 Kids and Counting: GrandDuggar First Birthday." How is she doing?
AD: She's doing great! She's walking everywhere.
PD: Now that you have been married for a few years, how do you keep things romantic?
AD: Josh is amazing. He still opens the door for me.
PD: How do you find time to focus on your relationship?
AD: One thing is having a date night once a week. It doesn't always mean that we have to go to dinner -- sometimes we can just go for a drive. And Josh is a night owl, so we have time to talk after Mackynzie goes to bed.
PD: Anna, you recently revealed that you had a miscarriage last summer. How are you dealing with that?
AD: It was not an easy thing to go through. You experience so many emotions so fast. One thing that someone shared with me that helped was to thank God. I was so thankful to God when I found out I was pregnant, but it was hard to be thankful when I found out I miscarried.
PD: Anna, since you and Josh come from such big families (Anna is one of eight children), do you feel any pressure to have a lot of kids?
AD: No, I do not in any way feel pressure at all.
PD: Since Josh's youngest sister Josie was a preemie and experienced a lot of health issues, can you tell us how she's doing now?
AD: She's doing great -- rolling over, trying to scoot. It's amazing. She's developing so well for being a preemie baby.
PD: What's it like parenting in front of TV cameras?
JD: it's been a lot of fun! People will write with advice about what worked for them when their kids went through the same things. We've definitely been able to learn a lot.

Nicole said...They talked about their finances in several early episodes. They purchased several rental homes over the years and have become independently wealthy caring for all of the rental homes. They also built their gigantic home themselves because Jim Bob taught all of his older boys about carpentry, electricity, and plumbing. Michelle taught all of her girls how to sew and cook, so they have helped make a lot of the family's clothing and help out with the little ones. They also have had people in the community that have donated things to them through the church. They do make money from the show now, but they have never been dependant on the state or society to pay for their family.

The Houston Chronicle, which stuck the story about the Duggars’ 18th lil’ miracle in its “Bizarre News” section , does note that the Duggar patriarch “has not been specific when asked how he supports such a big family” but adds that Jim Bob’s mysterious accounting system “blends finance and religion.”
And, they fail to mention, donations. No family of 20 could get by on a single income—something any reporter who’s ever collected a paycheck ought to be able to surmise. In truth, the Duggars subsist on food donations from Sysco; supplement their bank accounts with contributions from other evangelical Christians and their church; and built their 7,000-square-foot “dream house” with donated supplies and decked it out with appliances donated by the Discovery Channel. Once it was built, the Discovery Channel sent the whole family on a trip to Disneyland. They also reportedly pay the Duggars for their participation. That’s not frugality—it’s welfare. The more babies Michelle Duggar has, the more free stuff she and her family get.

Usually it is an exchange of gifts for product placement or some such. It is very common. I am guessing that the network contributes to their income and that would be expected under the circumstances.

Lee said...No, the public isn't paying for them except in Earth's resources. They certainly wouldn't be able to pay for themselves if it weren't for television paying them so much money. The father is a court reporter. Not exactly enough income to support 19 kids.

ashleigh said...You are all wrong, those of you who say it's donations and charity and welfare!! Long before any money from the TLC show, they sold insurance and have been property owners, both residential and commercial, and THAT'S how they've made their living! Now that Josh is an adult, he has 2 car lots and a towing business and another Duggar owns a storage business... They shop carefully, and save the difference. They DON'T get free food from Sysco -- they might be a customer, but they're paying customers! They are clean, well-behaved, polite, SELF-SUFFICIENT people! They are NOT on welfare, they do not take charity, they are not takers!!

who cares said...Says the person who IS on the system. This family has BEEN self sufficient from the get go and they teach and instill that in their kids. Who cares how many kids they have if they can take care of them. This isn't the Octo mom that we are talking about. This is a wholesome family that is a GREAT example to the rest of the world of God's plan & I don't mean because they have 19 kids, but because they are truely pure and "right". They show living Godly doesn't mean living you can't have fun or have to do without. If every family could live to their example, this world would be a better place to live. They don't live in judgement and hatred. I am sorry you feel that miserable that you have to try and pick them apart and make lies to give yourself gratification. But as you see, no one agrees with you. I will paray for you. Embrace joy, it feels better.

Welfare comes from the government. Donations from people, churches and companies are, wait for it..... DONATIONS!
So, do you hate them for the large number of kids they have? Maybe their blatant Christianity? Cause it ain't because the govt is supporting them.

JohnA said...Ooooooh. It's doooonnnaaations! Now I get it. Thanks for clearing that up everybody.
...I wish I received donations to supplement being "self sufficient."
Done with this topic.

JohnA said...I had to laugh at the post from "Who Cares?" Pefect name.
First of all, I just questioned if they get aid. That's it. I've not said one thing personally about them, like the rest of you supporters who sling names at people who disagree with YOUR opinion.
You defend them, but it's all based on what you see on TV. You don't KNOW them. You don't know enough to make such blanket statements. Those comments in the post that I "found interesting" came from an article in the Houston Chronicle. I didn't write it.
All I know is... God helps those who help themselves. And if they DO take donations, then they help themselves to a lot of things.

Gail said...These people are disgusting - what if every family in this country, and the world, followed the Duggars' despicable actions and tried to see how many children they could hatch. They show absolutely no regard for using up our limited resources. More cars on the roads, more jobs needed, more food and water used up - their selfishness is magnified over and over. TLC should be ashamed that in its quest for ratings, it encourages this type of irresponsible behavior. These people are freaks and should all be sterilized.
