Do you vaccinate your kids? Credit: Getty Images
The focus here is on the flu vaccine, but of course there are many other shots out there for our children to receive.
The anti-vaccination camp, led in part by Jenny McCarthy, has quieted down somewhat. But there are still many parents who believe that vaccines are dangerous and unnecessary.
How about you? Do you vaccinate your children against the flu and other diseases? Or do you think the shots themselves are the problem?

There were some helpful ideas on Http://bit.ly/GetWellStayHealthy that I found. Be sure to get the samples of Emergen-C they're offering too while you're on the site.

Alicia said...No sadly. Otherwise this wouldn't be an issue. If you want to put your kid at risk by not vaccinating, fine. However, it is selfish and stupid to risk other peoples' children because you're trusting the unsubstantiated ravings of a Hollywood lunatic.

I've never read her book, and was anti-vaccination before I even knew she was. I did hear her speak about this issue briefly on Oprah since then, and she said her son was perfectly fine one day, and then immediately after receiving a shot, developed the symptoms of autism. Incidentally, her doctor was there with her and cooberated her story. If your child suddenly developed autism right after being vaccinated, you'd probably be anti-vaccination too! By the way, she also said on the show that she is not against vaccinations, but thinks doctors should be more careful about giving the correct dose per weight, not giving more than one at a time, and paying special attention to those who may be more vulnerable for one reason or another.
I, on the other hand, am anti-vaccination. There is a lot of information out there about the negative side effects that can, and do, occur, ranging from decreased immunity and more subsequent illnesses, like ear infections, to the many accounts of people who also claim their child was fine just before a vaccination and developed autism just after. Of course, the pharmaceutical companies, who make a fortune off of the big vaccination business, will tell you these cases were not caused by the vaccination. But why would all of these mothers say their child was fine one day and autistic the next? Big Pharma has a reason to cover this info. up and cover it up they do. I know people who work for the pharmaceutical companies, and did you know that the tests that have shown no correlation between the vaccinations and autism were done by the pharmaceutical companies themselves! The people I know who work for these companies have told me that if the test comes out negative (for them) they are not required to report that. I think there are other factors that contribute to the alarming increase in autism, like the pesticides on our food etc., but if the claims that the mercury in the vaccinations was causing problems were not true, then why did they stop putting it in the vaccinations? I have seen a list of ingredients in these vaccinations and I think most people would be shocked to see things like arsenic and formaldyhyde just to name a few. It must be very nice to believe that your government (the FDA) is protecting you and would not let you, or especially your children, put anything into your body that would harm you. Naive, but nice.

Kelly said...By the way, this issue is not going to go away. There are now all but two states who allow religious/philosophical exemptions (as well as medical exemptions), so that you can choose not to vaccinate and still send your child to public school. Only West Virginia and Mississippi offer just a medical exemption, which is very difficult to get because doctors are taught in med school that vaccinations, and drugs in general, are the way to go. I've met several doctors in the last few years who have told me outright that they do not know the effects of vaccinations, and therefore, do not try to talk their patients into giving them to their kids. I met one who outright said he agreed with my decision not to vaccinate.
And for the woman who said it is selfish to expose your unvaccinated child to other children, if your child is vaccinated what are you worried about? The supposed risk would be to MY child, not yours.
I just wish people would research the anti-vaccination information too. It's a little more difficult to come by because you have the pharmaceutical companies spending tons of money on advertising the benefits of vaccinations (instead of putting it into researching the real effects of these drugs), the FDA protecting them (not us), and the American Medical Assoc. and academia continuing to give med. students the wrong information on vaccinations.
Someone more educated on this topic than I recently said to me "they know that a small percentage of kids will have severe reactions to these vaccinations, but they are willing to sacrifice those kids to avoid a possible epedimic." Maybe that makes sense to you too, but let me ask you this...if your child was one of that small percentage who develops autism, would it be worth it to you?
Having said all this, I believe very strongly in the right to make your own choices. Most of the moms I know have vaccinated and I never judge them for it. First, the overwhelming majority of information and organizations still support this. Second, I believe that most mothers do what they believe in their heart of hearts is right for their children. The jury is still out on this issue, but the fact that most states now offer an exemption to enter school, shows that it's moving in the right direction (in my opinion). It also shows that those who are concerned are not "lunatics' as one poster called Jenny M. There are valid concerns and dangers either way. I, personally, believe that we have everything we need to fight off these illnesses. But, I respect others' right to believe differently. I think eventually more and more people will see that there is another way. It's not easy being in the minority, but even the biggest doubters had to eventually agree that the world was round!!

Around the time most kids are vaccinated is about the same time they are learning to talk, walk, and interact with others and the outside world. This is also the time that children start exhibiting signs of disorders and the like. It is highly unlikely that a child would just wake up one morning autistic. It's most likely that the mom was in denial or was just starting to notice the symptoms and wanted something to blame it on. Check out the Center of Disease Control. It's always better to get vaccinated then risk another outbreak of possible deadly disease. What if people had refused to get Small Pox vaccinations? And if we have everything we need to fight off these illnesses, why are people still dying?
