Boys Will Be Boys, but They May Be Hitting Puberty Faster Than Their Dads

Actually, boys will be men. And it seems boys are growing up at a much faster rate these days -- with some actually achieving something vaguely resembling maturity by their 50th birthdays.
That's emotional maturity. As always, of course, men's brains evolve much more slowly than their bodies.
Boys physically start turning into men, a new study from Bulgaria suggests, as young as age 12. Reuters reports this flies in the face of the conventional belief that places the dreaded onslaught of male adolescence at least a year later.
However, boys may be physically developing faster than their fathers did.
Researchers studied 6,200 healthy Bulgarian boys between 0 and 19 years. They tracked the boys' height, weight and testicular volume, as well as the length and circumference of their penises.
Yes, penises. Grow up, guys.
"Studies done several decades ago in the same population reported that a leap forward in sexual development occurs at ages 13 through 16," researcher Dr. Fnu Deepinder, of Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, tells Reuters. "However, our study indicated that this spurt takes place between 12 and 15 years old."
That doesn't mean Bulgarian boys are more well-endowed than their fathers. They do, indeed, have growth spurts earlier, but researchers found the size differences generally disappeared by age 17.
Other recent studies have shown girls also are experiencing puberty earlier. Deepinder tells Reuters his study suggests the phenomenon is not limited to girls.
Lots of factors could be in play here, Deepinder tells the news service. Genetic, environmental, nutritional and educational factors could all be behind accelerated puberty.

Alicia said...here's an idea to save money. If you think you're kid is going to have sex at 13, teach them about sex and contraception at 10 and make sure they know where to find it and how to use and will use it, even if you have to buy the condoms. Better than being pregnant or having an STD before they graduate high school.

I am not sure if 10 would be the appropriate age, but I "knew" the basics about the facts of life by the age of 10 anyway. Yes, even if the parents have to buy condoms it is better than having a pregnant 13 year old girl, or a child with an STD, and worst of all acquiring HIV. We're not talking just about preventing life, but preventing death as well. This is scary indeed! I hope parents teach their children to be responsible and careful!

Alicia said...I wouldn't say 10 is too young. I'm 20 and my school started sex ed when I was 10 and I started puberty at 11. You're right, this is scary that puberty is happening younger and younger, but for kids who start it early, you can't reverse it. So work with what you've got and make it as easy and safe for them, even if it's uncomfortable for you.

10 might actually be pushing too late anymore. This is especially true in the areas where sex education consists of scare tactics and little information (like my school). By family, I knew all of the facts by 8 years old...partially due to a pbs program my grandmother had me watch. In school, we got no relevant info until 11th grade. And this was a school that took all of the area's pregnant teens. I'm sure you can imagine how prevalent they were.
I am of the mind that earlier education is better. Sure, be less specific with younger children...but seriously, be honest and maybe one day accidental pregnancies will be far fewer than they are now.

MotorCityMama said...Gary, get over yourself. Accidental pregnancies happen because boys tell girls they love them and refuse to wear condoms. Speaking of anyone you know? :-)

Alicia said...@MotorCityMama- Actually, I agree with Grey. Information is empowering, by teaching girls young what sex is and about contraception and how to protect themselves, we can remove the mystery from sex and give them the ability to refuse altogether or say, "condom or blue balls, you decide."

Scoff at that if you wish, but kids having intercourse at ever-younger ages will keep our school-girl pregnancy rate at the unacceptable level it has been for decades--higher than many "less developed" nations, and oral sex remains an alternative. I'm not saying parents should promote it, but that they keep an open mind when discussing sex with their kids, and not stamp oral as a definate "no-no". Earlier-developing boys means seeking sexual relief for more teen years, and girls ingesting semen from them has virtually no health drawbacks for either of them.

Alicia said...Um, STDs? That's a huge health drawback and is definitely something to be concerned about with oral sex. Better to teach kids about safer ways to prevent STDs and pregnancy than oral sex.

(Any parent with half a brain should be able to tell when puberty is beginning.) If a parent is there to discuss the things the child has questions about, defines all of the things that can and will probably happen with irresponsible sex, and explains what masturbation is all about, the child will be less likely to feel the need to have sex with someone.

rachshoes said...ummm not feminist alert you idiot, FAIRNESS alert. Why is it feminist to expect a return favor? Is it also feminist that I might like to orgasm as often as my male partner? And neesee is right! There are STDs that can be contracted by oral sex. Let's see, all bacterial STDs (like Syphilis, gonorrhea, Chlamydia) and let's not forget herpes. Yes, oral herpes can be contracted on the penis or vulva. How'd you like to have cold sores on your penis from a blow job? Doesn't seem so safe anymore does it? The truth is oral sex, like intercourse and anal as well, carry much of the same risks. So don't go around proposing oral sex as a "safe alternative." It's not and shame on anyone who is stupid enough (or foolish enough to ignore what they know) to believe (and act) otherwise.

Gary said...You grow up Tom Henderson!!!!!! I know that "Tom" is traditionally a male name; however, you write like a biased female. Old news, most of us "men" hit puberty at or before this age.
"Yes, penises. Grow up, guys.", sounds like something that only a female would write.
"Actually, boys will be men. And it seems boys are growing up at a much faster rate these days -- with some actually achieving something vaguely resembling maturity by their 50th birthdays.", If you are not a female, then you are missing a perfectly great opportunity. Listen to yourself.
Of course, I am sure that you will come back with something witty that also shows your feminane side. Give me a break.
If you are in fact a female, It figures and if you were not so biased, you might have a broader following.

The only difference that I can state is that I grew up (as an Army brat) overseas, but that shouldn't make any diff since my diet and culture were the same. Hell, if I had remained on the base, I could've been in West Tapioca, TN for all that matter.

My 10 yr. old grandaughter is in a bra because she needs to be, not because it seemed fashionable. The only thing I know for sure is that virtually every single thing we were fed was fresh, home-made (bread and all) and we ate meat only three times a week. All the rest of our protein came from nuts, beans, fish, cheese and eggs. Is there anything unprocessed anymore?
