Baby Josie Duggar Celebrates First Birthday
Filed under: Twins, Triplets, Multiples, Celeb News & Interviews
The littlest Duggar, Baby Josie, has just passed an important milestone -- one that even her parents thought she might not reach: Her first birthday.
When she was born via emergency cesarean-section on Dec. 10, 2009, weighing only 1 lb. 6 oz., the family, and especially Mama Michelle Duggar, feared for the preemie's life.
"We didn't know if she was going to live. She was so tiny and fragile, the size of Dad's hand," she tells ParentDish, referring to her husband, Jim Bob.
But a year later, Josie weighs 16 lbs., and she's doing well developmentally, though she continues with monitoring and receiving oxygen when she sleeps, the ubermom says.
"She's so strong," Duggar of TLC's "19 Kids and Counting" says. "She's saying da-da. She has an iron grip. She's a funky little fighter; she had to be to stay with us this long. I thank God; we are so grateful."
The family, steeped in the QuiverFull religion, is quick to acknowledge the power of prayer. Eight-year-old Justin gave his mom all the spiritual props: "Mama, you prayed for that," he told her yesterday.

Little Josie is bright-eyed and smiling, and though she might not have real pigtails yet, she's sporting a Bebe Doos headband with faux blonde hair.
"Our babies don't have hair for the first year-and-a-half," Duggar laughs. "We love these."
A balder Baby Josie initially went home from the hospital on April 6, but she was readmitted two days later. She finally went home for good in June. "We are so thankful," Duggar told ParentDish in August. "It could've been much more serious."
Now, to celebrate Josie's first birthday, Mom has cut out a giant number 1, which her younger kids are decorating in pink with polka dots. She plans to start a new tradition of taking a photograph every year with the three little Duggars who are the same age. Other daughter Jordyn turns 2 on Dec. 18 and her granddaughter Mackynzie was born on Oct. 8, 2009.
In addition to the fun photo, the Duggars will throw Josie a proper ice cream and confetti-poppers birthday party -- either tomorrow or Thursday -- when the rest of the family arrives back from a mission in Central America, specifically Honduras and El Salvador. Daddy Duggar took 10 of the older kids with him in an effort to teach the Duggar youth to help others.
"In the spirit of the season, Jesus gave the greatest gift and we need to reach into our own lives and be sacrificial for others as well," Mom Duggar says. "It's about giving others their basic needs and not expecting anything in return."
And speaking of not expecting anything, baby Josie has no idea that a riding toy is at the top of the list of birthday gifts from her family, along with new pajamas in the next size up, nine months. Josie is just growing out of her six-month size pjs, Duggar says.
As for her own 44th birthday back in September, Mama Duggar says she's still using the elliptical machine -- sometimes twice a day -- she received from the family, adding that she only has 10 more pounds to drop until she's at her ideal weight.
And then what? Will she get pregnant again?
"I would love more and we're hoping we're not finished," she says. "But at this point, I'm not pregnant."

Kkh said...Actually, I think that all the comments about this family "making [people] sick to their stomachs" is quite a bit of brainwashing from the late 20th century. Ever since birthcontrol, more life-saving medical help, and constraints on more family budgets, we all "learned" that no one need have big families anymore.
But here is a family, who pays their own way in the world; home-schools the kids at a high level of learning; sends their kids to foreign countries to actually GIVE of their own time to help people who are really poor, or digging out from a natural disaster, and thereby teaching the kids about other countries, and about GIVING!!
Michelle seems to be a wonder at organization of her family and their needs. Have any of you naysayers watched the show at all??? The children are well-spoken, intelligent, have learned a lot more than many kids educated in our public school systems (not their fault maybe,... lack of public funds), and they actually seem to care about ALL their siblings, and their parents. The parents KNOW the names of each child, and who they are. Michelle and Jim Bob make sure to spend some quality time alone with each child, since they may not have the quantity.
And something that may offend many of you is that Michelle and Jim Bob made a decision about having the children in relationship to God and trusting in Him. It looks to me like Heavenly Father has kept his end of the bargain, by helping them to have the means to have a good and full life. The Duggars have not stepped back from their end by NOT trusting in Him. When you hear them say that they could have more, it is because they are TRUSTING that Heavenly Father will be watching and helping them in that capacity.
It is hard to "trust in the Lord with all thy heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding". I struggle with it, but I try. I admire the Duggars. All of them have gathered round to help with little Josie, and her difficulties from being born as a "preemie". If you watch any of these types of TLC shows, you can tell what is real, and what is not. The Duggars have a lot of love and peace in their home. I believe that their children will go into the world and make a difference in positive ways.
The thing that would, indeed, be difficult to watch or learn of, would be some of the people in the world, who have as many children as they want, regardless of having many fathers contribute to their pregnancies, but then they do not live in their homes and are rarely a part of the child's life. They let the older kids run wild because they can't control them. They then pay for them from the means that the government has set up to help people because they feel entitled to it. When that money really belongs to those who are really trying, but need the help. If TLC were showing those families on their programs, I would say that there was a most definite need for counseling regarding just having lots of kids.
That is not what the Duggars are doing in their lives and with their children. Watch them in their show. Are your kids so kind and well-behaved, let alone smart and using it all for good in the world?
I doubt that Heavenly Father wants everyone to have many children. Not just anyone could handle that kind of life. But if you are one that does trust in the Lord's understanding, then you know that He will watch over you and help you with your family, no matter the size. If you do not believe in God, then you have to rely on yourselves and information in the world. That is all right too, if you "teach your children well".
I think that the Duggars leave only room for admiration in all that they have and continue to accomplish.

Savannah said...what everyone fails to mention is that before the show they had a 3 bedroom house with 13 kids crammed in there and one bathroom. of course they are living in a huge house now... do you know what they get paid per episode? they can only afford them now because of the show but if it wasnt for that all these kids would be in a sardine can of a home with the parents bringing nothing in the home and all the kids wearing hand me down clothes and barley eating, this mother makes me sick. i dont watch the show, they wont get my rating. she needs to get fixed. she is not even a parent the older kids are to the younger ones. makes me sick!

They have nineteen, Josh and Anna are expecting their second and Michell said she "hopes they're not finished." One more could be the end in more ways than one. Please go through menopause and quickly. They were on TV before there were 17. I wish the children would go to college and get an education. Being a mother without a means of income is ridiculous. Their husbands will not live forever.
Michelle has had enough medical problems in the past year without adding another pregnancy to it.

David S. said...I am glad the baby is OK -- having seen this family's show on TLC, I am impressed at how the Duggar parents manage so many kids. That said, maybe at age 44, Mrs. Duggar needs to face some reality here and concentrate on the children she and her husband have. I know they don't believe in birth control, and that is their right, but given the intense medical needs of ths child, maybe having more is just not a good idea.

RUSSELL said...Before all you "perfect" people get your panties in a knot, consider one important FACT. The Duggars are a decent, honorable, GIVING,
family, who has been blessed with many children. For you heathens who can only point to negative aspects of this family - grow up !! If your life has been a disaster, with one disappointment right after another, it is VERY likely that YOU brought most of your problems upon yourself. Most people just love to blame their ex-spouse, or money problems, or bad employers, or any number of OTHER people or events, for their misery. The TRUTH is that if we are miserable, WE caused our own misery. Grow up, stop blaming others for your indiscretions, accept responsibility for your own actions, and stop being jealous of people like the Duggars. They are simply leading their lives as they see fit. You losers have absolutely NO RIGHT to judge these people. Change your negative attitude, and clean up your OWN house. You'll see that your own pitiful life begins to improve. Time is getting short, think about what I have said here.

However, at the age of 44, I think it's time for the Duggars to stop having babies. Josie's premature birth should have been a wake-up call that Michelle is getting to be too old. They were lucky with Josie, but the next one may not be as lucky. Preemies can suffer from a whole array of medical and learning issues. And after the age of 35, there's a larger risk of Downs Syndrome. While I respect their belief that having 19 kids was part of God's plan, God also gave man the knowledge to invent birth control. I just don't see using birth control as a sin.

Shar said...It occurs to me that she may want to consider that her age might have been a factor in Josie's problems.....and the fact that when Josie turns 18, mom will be 62. She's considering having MORE kids??? At this rate, she'll have grandchildren older than her own....if she doesn't already.

Kkh said...Yes, well.... how often do we read articles on the "rich and famous" just starting a family at 42, or 46, or Kelly Preston Travolta having another child at 48. AND people that we know nothing about, but we read that doctors are giving the opportunity to get pregnant at older and older ages. It would seem to me that it is according the the woman or couple's choice. Not yours or anyone else's that chooses to make their opinions known.

That comment makes me sick to my stomach. You would think after the health issues on this last one they would say enough. She is too old to have any more. These people are truly psychotic.

This is an amazing family and they have taught their kids to be responsible people nothing is just handed to them and look how well grounded these kids are. May God continue to bless the Duggar family .
