Epidural-Related Deaths in Childbirth on the Rise, but Still Rare

These days, it seems every hour a new stress bomb explodes in the world of expectant moms preparing to give birth. The latest complication to worry about? A new study finds childbirth deaths from spinal anesthesia are rising, Reuters reports.
Though deaths related to general anesthesia fell, the number of U.S. women who died from complications from epidurals and spinal blocks during childbirth has risen since the mid-1990s, the study finds.
Dr. Joy L. Hawkins, principal investigator for the study, stresses that such deaths remain rare, but says there is a need for researchers to continue to explore ways that anesthesia can be made safer for women, according to Reuters.
"It is concerning," Hawkins, of the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, tells the news service.
The results, published in the January 2011 issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology, feature a research study, which examines anesthesia-related deaths for the past 12 years, and compares them with anesthesia-related deaths for the 12 years prior to that.
In the new study, researchers found that between 1979 and 2002, childbirth deaths related to any anesthesia complication dropped by 59 percent among U.S. women, Reuters reports.
There were three such deaths for every million live births between 1979 and 1990, compared with just more than one death per million births between 1991 and 2002 -- the most recent years for which data was available.
But, while deaths related to general anesthesia kept falling in the 1990s, those related to regional anesthesia rose slightly, from 2.5 deaths for every million cesarean sections between 1991 and 1996 to 3.8 per million between 1997 and 2002, according to Reuters.
Researchers say they believe deaths related to general anesthetics declined due to improvements in monitoring of patients receiving anesthesia, safer anesthetics and improved understanding of how the body responds to anesthesia, the news service says.
But although regional anesthesia is considered quite safe, in rare cases patients can have a severe allergic reaction to the anesthetic, or the drug can cause breathing or heart problems, Hawkins tells Reuters.
She stresses that women should remember that anesthesia-related deaths during childbirth are a rare event, but women should make sure they take every precaution to treat chronic health conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes, which make them more vulnerable to childbirth complications.
"I think the main thing is to get good prenatal care, and keep any medical conditions you have under control during pregnancy," Hawkins tells Reuters.
Hawkins also suggests women make sure their anesthesiologist knows about any health conditions they have or medications they have been taking.
Regional anesthesia numbs the lower portion of the body and allows women to stay awake during childbirth. Most cesarean sections are done under regional anesthesia, but emergency c-sections often require general anesthesia, Reuter's reports.

But, my sister had one and the dr who was putting her's in must have hit a nerve because she had what she called a JOLT of lightening shot down her left leg and into her foot. She said the pain was so bad she yelled out and a second later she didn't feel anything because the epidural took hold. Later on her dr asked why she yelled out like that and she told him what happened and he said they hit a nerve and was very angry over that. He got her bill for the epidural waved and also for part of her surgical bill. When she was home and healing she kept getting crusty patches erupting around her incission and the dr took a look at it and said it was a staph infection from dirty impliments! We are ALL disgusted at that thought! Anyone going to Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn better think twice. How filthy is that to find out your skin infection is because the hospital isn't cleaning their surgical tools correctly!
She's lucky that's all she got.

Me said...As per usual, the media thrives on hyperbolic news coverage so everyone can live in fear. The reason that epidural-related deaths are on the rise is because there are more women undergoing C-sections than ever before. If you have more people swimming in the ocean, you'll have more shark bites, if you have more people keeping bees, you'll have more stings, etc... In fact, so many people own dogs that dog bite related injuries and death are extremely common; I'm surprised the media hasn't warned everyone to buy a goldfish instead. Use your brain and think for yourself, don't let these articles scare you into a virtually harmless procedure. After all, without risk, life just wouldn't be life...

Holly said...An epidural is not a harmless procedure. I had one and would never have one again. If they don't tell you not to sit up or get up for several hours after having an epidural or monitor you to make sure you don't, you'll wind up with excruciating headaches that will effect your equilibrium. I was left alone in a recovery room and got out of bed to go to the bathroom. The horrible headaches took 2 months to go away and it was hard for me to enjoy my baby. When I was getting my master's degree, in conversation, one of my college professors mentioned a friend of his who was having severe headaches after having surgery. Sure enough, the guy had had an epidural. This type of anethesia is far from harmless. I had my 2nd child without anesthesia and would rather have 10 children by natural childbirth than experience the headaches I had due to the epidural.

wow said...Holly, you are an idiot. Just because your experience was not a pleasant one, does not mean the other million people who have an epidural will not be safe. I doubt you are a scientist or anything important, so no one wants to hear about your personal ideas pertaining to hard facts. Logic would tell you that these studies are often flawed and if you are gonna get your scientific info from this website then I am afraid for the education of your children.

sandi said...Why are epidurals being handed out like lollipops? We were built for birth. Still not sure the purpose of childbirth hurting so bad but can definitely see the cause. A good midwife is able to stretch you throughout labor so it is not as painful. A loving open atmosphere also helps with the tension that can distract from the focus you really need at this time. Too many docs delivering during t-times if you ask me!

sadie said...Sandi: I agree with you philosophically, but my own reality was that I needed to have my two births be C-section. Ironicaly, I am a huge proponant of natural childbirth. My pregnancies failed to progress and I was in stage 3 labor for hours and hours. In both cases, my babies were showing signs of distress and the doctor eventualy had to "take" them. I am so glad he did. He had tears in his eyes when he told me he felt that was what needed to be done becasue he was also a believer of natural childbirth. But I had an epidural, my husband was there with me and in both cases my babies were born safely. My daughter (the first born) came out purple / blue, with the chord wrapped around her neck and they had to revive her. But today, my daughter and son are 25 and 21 and both are not only surviving, but are thriving and both have received high accolades in terms of their academic achievements (meaning there was no brain damage as a result of their traumatic births). In contrast, I know of a few cases where at all costs, the babies were delivered "naturally" and these babies now have cerebral palsey (a lack of oxygen situation). In these cases, the mothers were told they must and could deliver their babies with natural childbirth no matter what, even though their babies were showing signs of distress. I am still a beliver of natural childbirth. But let's take the doctor and midwife and natural childbirth organization ego out of the equation and do what is best for the individual patient with each individual birth. The stakes are too high.

my son was born under general anesthesia in 1984. when my daughter was born 1986, it was a planned c-section with an epidural. it only worked on the left half of me, but it was still worth it: to see her born, to be aware and awake and not coming out of general anasthesia afterwards.
please don't paint all woman with the same brush; 100 yrs ago my son might have died and me too.

So, judging from one woman to another, on how they should personally handle the pain of childbirth is rediculus. Some of us can birth a child and deal with the pain, others of us cannot handle the extreme pain... AND THATS OK!
To any woman considering having an epidural, dont let comments like that affect your decision, or make you feel as if you are any less of a woman. DO WHAT YOU FEEL IS RIGHT!
I have had 5 epidurals, 1 went bad. All 5 of my children were born healthy, and are now happy, smart, and healthy children.

Sandra said...No unfortuntally this does occur and there is no real reason for it. I got the privilage at 25 while having my 2nd child. I asked for an epidural because it worked so well with my son just two years prior. The only bad fact was when they put it in they were not properly monitoring the doses and actually stopped mine and my daughter's heart in the process. They had been more interested in watching the fireworks on the 4th of July than to take care of me properly. This is why things like this happen some doctors have more important things as far as they are concerned to do than to take the time and do what is right by there patients. I will not say there are no good doctors because I know quite a few wonderful ones but it is a shame those few bad ones let things like this happen and make all other doctors look bad. Childbirth is suppose to be a wonderful experiance dispite the pain. And so what if a mother wants a little relief from what is going to be one of the most painful moments of her life. Should a mother have to worry about if something to help her have an easier delivery is going to kill her and her child? No, her only focus should be on that beautiful life she is bringing in to the world. With all are advances why should we have to worry about anything else? Now a mother who has a million and one worries as is has one more MAJOR thing to worry about when it should have been the last thing on her mind. Just remember to think real hard when they ask you if you want someting to ease the pain. I know I will never allow them to give me one ever again simply because the loss of my life and the loss of a future child's life is not worth the risk!

Notdumb said...Well, you and your baby could die just as easily without the epidural... You could hemorrhage to death, suffer from hypovolemic shock, heart attack, amniotic fluid embolism, uterine rupture, sepsis, etc... I could go on all day... So, don't let one bad experience create a phobia of an epidural; if you're going to do that, you might as well not have anymore children... Don't be ignorant!!

Just because its "offered as a choice" doesnt make it a GOOD choice. Its NOT healthy for your baby. My dlelivery was very quick too. Maybe BECAUSE I didnt have any interference.
