As we say goodbye to 2010, it's time to say "aloha" to the the newest American Girl doll.
Kanani Akina is the brand's 2011 Girl of the Year. The Hawaiian, open-hearted girl who loves to help others hits stores Jan. 1, kicking off a year of American Girl 25th birthday celebrations.
Available for one year, the 18-inch Kanani doll with long, wavy brown hair and hazel eyes will launch with two books telling her story ("Aloha, Kanani" and "Lend a Hand: Girl-Sized Ways of Helping Others") and, naturally, lots of accessories your child will be drooling over (can you say paddle board set, hula outfits or shaved ice stand?).
The Kanani doll also introduces an American Girl partnership with the National Wildlife Federation to help raise awareness of endangered animals. Kanani's stories feature Malana, a Hawaiian monk seal she rescued. For each sale of the plush Kanani seal sold in 2011, American Girl will donate $1 (up to $100,000) to the NWF.
Ready to warm up from the winter weather and bring a little Kaua'i home? On Jan. 1, American Girl retail stores nationwide will hold official unveilings of Kanani.
Guests will be the first to see Kanani, and each girl will receive a free grass skirt for her doll, check out a Hula demo by a professional Hawaiian dance troupe and take part in Hawaiian-themed crafts activities, doll drawings and more.
