Is Hooters a Family Restaurant?
Filed under: In The News, Opinions, New In Pop Culture
Does a children's menu and a box of crayons from your waitress necessarily make a restaurant "family friendly?"
That's what Hooters is hoping you'll think now that it has a kids' menu and an expanded online store with toys and clothes for kids with slogans such as "I only date Hooters girls", "Hooters honor roll student" and onesies declaring "I'm a boob man." One creepy baby bid states, "Hooters. Your crib or mine."
To be clear, I do not begrudge the Hooters chain or it's owl innuendo. If frat boys and sports fans want tasty wings served by girls in tank tops and orange shorts over weird, flesh-colored tights, I have no objection. And I believe NOW ought to lay off Hooters and spend more time fighting injustices against women in the Middle East.
On the other hand, I worry about what Hooters' not-so-subtle corporate plan to attract families might mean for children. Will my kid's Little League coach think it's OK to take the team to Hooters after the next baseball game? Will normalizing family night out at Hooters sexualize yet another previously sacred part of our children's lives -- the family dinner?
Believe it or not, Hooters birthday parties for kids as young as 7 and 13 can be found on YouTube. It's difficult to watch how out of place and painfully embarrassed these kids look as they are serenaded and hugged by the scantily clad waitresses. These boneheaded parents clearly have no idea about what a kid really wants on their birthday. These kids aren't having fun. Why can't we let kids be kids?
The bottom line is that, with so many parents who are either too busy, too lazy or too stupid to parent consciously, Hooters' kids' menu will inevitably mean that many more families will go out for wings and buy their 4-year-old a "Future Hooter Girl" t-shirt on the way out.
So why should this matter to you if you don't take your kids to Hooters? Because culture matters. The combination of bad parenting and corporate profit-seeking has introduced children to "Grand Theft Auto," slutty Bratz bolls, sleazy kids' clothes and Disney starlets who pole dance. Without a question, the cumulative result has been an assault on childhood innocence that affects everyone's kids and makes good parenting harder than it's ever been. Bottom line: desensitizing children to the adult nature of a Hooters environment is a bad idea –- no matter how good the wings are.

CECUMMINGS said...I took a Little League team to Hooters after they won a Championship several years ago. All of the boys, now young men, remember it fondly. These boys are all fine young men now, attending the US Naval Academy, Texas Tech University, LSU, OU, Milshap. All will go on to achieve great things.
Lighten up, have fun.
Your children will learn how to act from you. If you act like a pig in Hooters or anywhere else your children will be pigs If you just have fun and are respectful your kids will too.

Anita said...I think most are missing the point.. this is about the insidious sexualization of children that has become acceptable in our society. I agree wholeheartedly with what Rachel has written. As a parent it disturbs me that this filters down into everything our children are exposed to. (Anyone who has tried to buy clothes for a 6 year old girl will know what I am talking about!)
Children do copy what they see so we have to be vigilant about what they are exposed to. They do not just copy their parents behaviour but everyone they think they want to be like.
As a Catholic and an immigrant I'd like to say that I think this is a more important issue than immigration reform! And one that is too often brushed under the carpet.
Keep up the good work Rachel!

samuel said...it's not the sexualization of kids.
it's the exposure of kids who are naturally sexual
to an adult boob food focus restaurant and the
way society and individuals treat the topic of sex.
since i'm NOT a wing guy, i'm not a Hooters patron
but this is all pretty tame...even for kids.
adults? you guys are the ones who have
to address the topic of sex with yourself and your
kids. what is your male child going to do when
he sees micro bikinis on the beach in the summer
or a terribly small tight tank top in public?
explain it, don't complain or whine.

Basically, anything he asks about, we discuss openly and he comes to me freely about questions about his body and others' bodies. But why, oh why would I, as a person responsible for his emotional, moral, educational, cultural, and physical development, take him to Hooters??? What could possibly be the point in exposing him to such an atmosphere - to turn him on?? Even if it's "tame" as you say, what redeeming value does that place have for children? Doesn't anyone want to just take their kids to museums, galleries, parks, and concerts anymore, or is it all about adult stimulation and who cares about your child's development and intellectual nourishment? Why even have kids if you aren't going to put some thought into the kinds of places, scenes, and situations you expose them to?

Why in the world some parents today seem so anxious to expose their children to such hypersexualized environment ? Do they know what the name Hooters means? unfortunately this kind of immorality is becoming so normal that parents do not see the difference. Do they want their daughters to dress like the waitresses at Hooters do? There are many great family- friendly restaurants out there to enjoy. Good job Rachel!

THAT WAS FOR MY GRANDSON'S 18TH BIRTHDAY. THAT IS WHERE HE REQUESTED TO GO. HE WAS NOT ALLOWED TO GO BEFORE THEN!! WHILE I WAS THERE, I OBSERVED DIRTY OLD MEN SITTING AROUND WATCHING THE EVERY MOVES OF THE GIRLS WORKING. YES, THEY HAD BIG BOOBS AND REALLY SHORT SHORTS ON!! NO MATTER WHAT HOOTERS REPRESENTATIVES SAY, THIS IS A SEXUALLY ORIENTED ATMOSPHERE, AND NO PLACE FOR CHILDREN!!

Sara said...Thank you Rachel for this article. I completely agree with this and it is sad that Hooters is trying to market more towards younger people. I also agree with the first comment. I don't think we should take children there and I don't think adults need to be in that environment either. It is an opportunity for lust. There are so many better places to go and things to experience that are life-giving and true to our hearts desires. Why support an establishment that objectifies women?

I believe there needs to be way more moralistic people in the world. I can understand single young men, but I do not believe it is a place for married men or children. I do not have any "trust" problems with my man and by the way he believes the same as I do but I don't think it is a good idea or appropriate environment for a family man.

And then the two harassing waitresses intimidated the one harassed. I hardly think that this is behavior that I would want children to see.
Moreover, the only two women I have ever known to be whores, yes, actual prostitutes, were Hooters waitresses (in costume and working while making this known to me). No, neither incident was a joke. And no, I did not purchase their services. I hardly think that I would want children overhearing this.

It is not healthy for kids to grow up thinking its normal to treat women primarily as a sex object. It’s also sad that a restaurant be named after women’s breasts. It is well known as a derogatory slang for the females “parts”, everyone knows it. My sister knows it, my mom knows it, the homeless guy on the bench knows it, even my damn dog knows it. The people at Hooters of course know it, but use the whole “owl” excuse to cover their asses and I’m sure laugh about it. I think women and men should be treated equally, but unfortunately sex sells, and women voluntarily exploit themselves. I guess we have gone backwards in time and money is more important than respect for oneself so women rationalize being sexually harassed. But to bring kids into it is wrong on so many levels. Morally and ethically, WOW…. It is shocking. Somewhere the “rights” and judgments of people’s choices got blurred in with idiocracy and stupidity. They say the parent is responsible for where they take their children and a lot of families are comfortable patroning hooters. Well I’m sure there are men out there that would take their 12 year old to a strip club because they are ok with it, but they make laws for imbeciles like that. So they slapped the 18+ sign on establishments like that just as they should with Hooters because clearly there are stupid parents out there. People get older which is a fact, they don’t get wiser which is proven. Its adult entertainment. Hooters openly says that and many other comments that back it. They have had dozens of sexual harassment claims, the outfits are skimpy with cleavage and ass cheeks hanging out, pictures with hidden innuendos in the restaurants pertaining to breasts and blonde jokes galore plastered all over the wall….this is insults+degrading-integrity = unbelievable! And they try to play it off as women having the right to choose where they can work and being empowered? what a load of BULL….we are talking a heaping load of horse shit for the purpose of benefiting the restaurant and getting the airhead waitress to think she is “empowered” ya, sure….while you’re at it, bend over a bit more to brush the wing crumbs off the table, I need a good look at those hooters…..This place is trash, it will most likely always exist and prosper from their faithful upstanding clientele, I mean “patrons”, but please let’s do something about taking the kids away from this smutty trash can of a restaurant. Let the white trailer-trash-can restaurant keep the filth inside and the kids keep some mental health by staying away before it’s washed away with this sexist crap. Take em to Chuck E Cheese or McDonalds for Christ’s sake. I personally don’t like Hooters (shocking) but there is nothing I can do about it. I am one of those people with morals, so I voice my opinion by not going and posting posts like this. But children in this environment is wrong. I’ts child abuse, and sexual abuse. The kids menu/kids eat free Sundays, color crayons, children sized T-shirts “future hooters girl” and high chairs need to be removed from Hooters restaurants as well as changed to an 18 and over adult restaurant....which from the pictures below, it clearly is...

To see a copy of the original court petition see The Smoking Gun website, or just Google Jarman Gray and Hooters. Hooters sure isn't a wholesome, "family restaurant" for the kids that the lying Hooters marketing campaign is trying to sell.
Also, if you disagree fine, say so. Then I will post some of my other Hooters true stories. You'll be sick when you hear some of them. What I am telling you is this: If you think it is all just no big deal that's only because you have no idea at all of how deep a cesspool the place can be. You just don't know. But if you make me, I will educate you as to exactly why Hooters is NOT a place you should ever take children.
