W. Virginia Bill Would Yank Your Driver's License if Your Kid Misses Too Much School

"Look at this note from school! Ten unexcused absences?! That tears it! Don't even think about going out with your friends this weekend. You just lost your driving privileges, Bucko!"
Sound familiar?
Actually, this is not the sound of you talking to your kids. It could be the sound of the state talking to you.
That is, if you happen to live in West Virginia.
The Parkersville News and Sentinel reports State Sen. Erik Wells has introduced a bill to yank your driver's license if your kid misses 10 or more days of school. You'd get a warning after the fifth unexcused absence.
The Democrat tells the News and Sentinel he knows this bill will go over about as well as Rush Limbaugh in a pole-vaulting contest. However, he wants to make a point.
"I think responsibility has to start somewhere, and it is the parents' responsibility as parents to put the welfare of their child first, and one of those aspects is to get the child to school," Wells tells the newspaper.
He adds perpetually absent kids should also lose their ability to participate in band, play sports or enjoy other extracurricular activities.
"There needs to be some consequences," Wells tells the News and Sentinel.
Yeah, maybe. But West Virginia's General Assembly has a lot of other issues nipping at its heels, the newspaper reports, including a bill adding five to 10 minutes to the school day. Lawmakers say this, too, will impress upon parents the importance of education.
All told, lawmakers have 2,000 bills staring at them this legislative session. Only 200, on average, become law. Wells tells the News and Sentinel he's not optimistic about his bill passing.
Nonetheless, he adds, he hopes his effort will spark discussion. It already has. The News and Sentinel reports West Virginia Education Association President Dale Lee supports the bill.
"I think that one of the things a parent owes to a child that they bring into this world is to provide an environment to make sure they're in school," Wells tells the News and Sentinel. "I just have a hard time, as a parent, seeing how a parent would neglect their child, and I do think it's neglect ... You are hampering that child's ability to succeed in life by keeping them out of school and that's a disservice to that child."
Bills don't always have to be signed into law to be effective, Wells tells the News and Sentinel. Sometimes it's enough that legislation -- even futile legislation -- is introduced to let people know that lawmakers are doing something.

CocoChavez said...Great Idea! If you leave for work before your teenager does and he keeps skipping school, what are your options to remedy this problem? The best option would be to drive your child to school yourself to make sure they get there. Oh wait that wont work YOU JUST LOST YOUR LICENSE, and if your not willing to break the law you will be likely losing your job shortly soon to in many cases. Then you can go unemployment, welfare and food stamps and stay home to make sure your kid gets on the bus. Problem solved until your child gets sick or suspended and needs to get picked up and then the state will take your child away for neglect place them in a foster home and they will be placed on a variety of psychotropic drugs to zombify the child until he doesnt' mind sitting in school or drooling all over himself for that matter. The System works Hooray! Stay in school kids and stay off drugs (or at least the ones prescribed to you).

I have met parents so overwhelmed they can't get their kids to school. These parents don't need to loose their drivers license. They have often already lost their job, house, and car. Piling on does nothing to help the situation. Wouldn't it be better to have a school councelor ask the parents what is inhibiting the child from attending school than having a judge sanctioning the parent?

This is only going to cause a lot of parent to lose their licenses over BS. We no longer have rights except those given to us at that specific time. My children are in school and both on honor roll to boot. So why should the govt have the right to tell me how to raise my children??? And this especially becomes a problem in the winter time. They (the school board) tells the parents that if you feel the roads are too bad to send your child to school then don't ~ you have that right. But at the same time it is held against you and your child and counted as an Unexcused absence. So with bad weather, your child can miss the 10 days in one season. Too many side effects for this idea to actually beneifit the children without causing parents to lose their jobs to loss of license. I am sick to death of everyone having the right to tell me how to raise my children. Yet WE aren't allowed to punish them for fear of losing them to the state (CPS), but yet the school is going to have the right to punish us????? WTF??????????? Our govt really needs to wake up, let parents punish their kids again without fear of the state taking them and you will see a major improvement in everything kid related!!!!!!!!!

railroader said...see my problem with this crap, is not only the fact that the govt is supposed to work for us, not us for them. We pay taxes so they make life operate smoothly. I dont work for some politician. And if they were ever face to face, they wouldnt have the guts to tell me i am a bad parent. If it came down to it, between me losing my job (cause i need a licence to work) my kids would go to a private school, and where i live, I can prove my kids dont go to public school, and i dont have to pay school taxes.

Dan said...Unreal..more govt interference where it clearly does not belong. Its hard enough being a parent nowadays with out having "clearly overreaching" laws passed by short sighted policy makers. Kids miss school for other reasons besides just skipping class. many are sick and can miss more then 10 days per year alone for that. There are many other reasons children could miss school to inumerarable to count. Lawmakers listen up: You do not need to pass laws for the sake of passing laws. Sometimes the status quo IS good enough. Please stop trying to make parenting harder then it already has to be. Yanking our license would not help the situation, would make life hard for families, parents, and would probably just add another layer of fat to the already overbloated, budget challenged state govts out there. Just my thoughts..

emstethem said...And I quote: "...hampering that child's ability to succeed in life..." This comment just flat out sucks. Our American school system really thinks too highly of itself. I think if the school system wants to help a child succeed they need to step up to the plate and improve the school system nationwide by offering NUTRITOUS LUNCHES, and offering to teach a second language (such as SPANISH or MANDARIN CHINESE or INDO. or ARABIC) because this is clearly much needed. How about some basic life skills? Such as how to sew? knit? darn? make butter or cheese? identify wild herbs? how to use those herbs medicinally or in the kitchen? make a poultice? tinture? build a shelter? or solar panels (oh no we cant have that! what would the power company do!)? Our school system turns out mediocre, insecure people destined to sit behind desks under flourcent lights for the rest of their lives AT BEST...uggg. But, I don't guess that's what this article is about...wow are the parents in this state really that bad???!!! PARENTS FIGHT BACK!!!!
