90 Teens Pregnant in One Memphis School

Why are so many Memphis teens getting pregnant? Credit: Getty Images
Just when you were getting over learning about pregnancy pacts, here is another shocking statistic, this one from Frayser High School in Memphis: 90 girls are pregnant or have had a baby this school year, Jezebel reports. In 2009, the teen pregnancy rate dropped to 39.1 births per 1,000 teens in 2009 but My Fox Memphis reports that the teen pregnancy rate in the high school's ZIP code is the highest in the city at 26 percent.
Why is this rate so high? Some people blame MTV shows like "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom," but then why wouldn't more schools have such high pregnancy rates? There is an even scarier explanation for such a high pregnancy rate among teens: lack of education.
In response to this alarming problem, Frayser High School has developed a new program called "No Baby!"
"The whole point of that is to teach them to say no. That's the reason this is 'No Baby.' No. We're not going to have babies. No, we're not going to have sex. Or at least we're going to be protected if we're going to do something. So that's really our purpose, is to teach these girls how to say no. They don't know how," Deborah Hester Harrison of non-profit Girls Inc. said of the new program.

appalling said...it's sad morals are this way, just totally lacking. but look at who kids are viewing as role models - mom and dad aren't around or talking about important stuff like this, so they look to disney stars like miley cyrus or justin bieber. these "stars" aren't good examples. pick up a "seventeen" magazine - it's full of sex tips....think parents!....do you want your kid's knowing sex tips?!?!?!?! of course their curiosity will win out and they'll try what they learn. keep it family friendly - HTtp://Bit.Ly/9EihZ0 and talk with your kids.

some1whodreams said...to: Appalling.... I really have an issue with your comment. I understand that media has an impact on children, but you don't see Miley Cyrus pregnant and you don't see Justin Beiber advertising sex. Seventeen magazine is an awesome magazine for girls, but the title of the magazine is there for a reason it is for girls who are around the age of SEVENTEEN or OLDER, they also have a college column in the magazine as well, This magazine is not for girls under 14, I am a 17 year old who has been reading 17 magazine faithfully for the past few years and have never had an issue with the magazine. the magazine strongly suggests to make wise decisions and to abstain from sex to prevent issues like pregnancy and STDs. Please do your homework before you go all crazy and blame the media. A lot has to do with parents and how children are being raised. It is not strictly the media's fault, nor is it strictly a parent's fault, it is everything combined. As long as your child knows what's going on with his or her body and knows what is acceptable and what is not, there should be no issues. Obviously mistakes can happen and things like rape and incest can occur, but those occasions are rare and need to be handled legally and should not be blamed of the famale.

So you admit that you're 17 and that that is the magazine's target audience for 17 and older, yet you've been reading it for years. You blew it right there admitting that. Your mind has already been altered by the media and what you've been reading and watching. And what Justine Biber and Miley Cyrus do is SELL SEX by the clothes, attitude, shows they're in and their lifestyles. They're selling it to the younger generation. You're foolish to think that the woman is never to blame int he case of incest or rape. The way you dress and act contributes to the possibility of you being raped. You can't advertise yourself and expect to not get the attention that goes with it. As a 17 year old, bothering to take time on a parenting site like this, says you've probably already been "sold".

rosedarlin said...appalling...Your names suits you well. You are appalling and your views dangerous and ignorant. The media has been selling sex as long as the invention of the printed word. Look at Elvis, a very recent "sex-seller", as you like to call them.
But to claim that a rape or incest victim is to blame by the way they dress is so completely outrageous and disgusting, that I can't even respond. Rape and incest is not about the victim or the way they dress, it's about power and a deep rooted disregard for anyone but oneself.
Get a grip!

AnnaRain said...@appalling...you are disgusting. How dare you say that a woman can contribute to rape and incest by the way they dress. I guess you think that all women should walk around in Berka covered head to toe? That a short shirt or low top gives a man permission to do what he wants? If you had a nice, expensive car (although I seriously doubt that you do) and it was stolen then it would be your fault. After all you shouldn't have been out driving such a beautiful car. And how do you justify incest? Did that 5 year old wear pajamas that were too sexy? You make me vomit. A rapist chooses to rape and do violence. it is his fault and his fault only anyone that blames the victim should be locked up in the general population in a maximum security prison. Make sure not to do anything to look to good to the other inmates. Not that that will help much. I am sure you will gain a whole new perspective on the subject.

Of course if we don´t expect it of them, and never teach them, they never will. I know plenty of men that were raised to think about their actions too, and they do, more than some women I know.

Lauren said...I agree that the boys should be held equally responsible, but I really resent the idea that these girls "don't know how to say no." I mean really? They're actually physically incapable of saying no? Of course not. Whats happening is either the girls don't care about it, allow themselves to be pressured into it or are pressuring the guys. By all means, teach away, but don't take away their accountability for their actions.

Alicia said...I hope this "No Baby" shite applies to guys as well. Teenage girls tend to not realize it's smart to carry a condom at all times and teenage guys should certainly learn to wrap it right away and everyone needs the power to say now, including guys.
But good, at least they seriously realize that teaching contraception is as important as teaching abstinence.

The more you have the more you get from the state. Mama leaves her children, gets involved in drugs or worse and the state ends up with the kids anyway. Thsy know how work the system. It's gone on for generations.

Okay to have children in HS because we are now entering the 4th (count em) 4th generation of black americans who have never worked. Don't need an education because you got 1. welfare; 2. SSI disability; 3; section 8 housing; 4. medical assistance - state; 5; medicare/medicaid - federal; 6. food stamps and if all else fails - THE PRISON SYSTEM.

Merinas van der Lubbe said...It's exactly the same where I live, but the welfare sluts are *white* - and there are 3 and 4 generations of them. Just as you say they learn to work the system from their mothers, grandmothers, and peers.
The solution is to simply take their babies away from them - ALL of them - if they can't afford to care for them without public assistance, and give the children to families who can afford them. Once the message gets out that that's what will happen, the pregnancies and the parasitism will stop - overnight - as if by magic.

I know a woman hose mother was mad at her for going to college and getting a life. the womangot married and moved in with her husband and the mom was going to lose her government housing because she refused to just have kids and be on welfare and live with her like her sisters did. This woman's grandmother was on welfare. as soon as the government started providing it her family was on it.
I know a woman who is became a grandmother at 32 and at 48 is now a great gandmother! All of them are on welfare. I know families where of the 9 kids raised on welfare 2 have jobs. It isn't just a southern black cultural thing it is a problem here in Canada too, it is an issue in the UK as well. Where ever there is welfare there is this issue.

I work a full time job as a case manager at a recovery home. After paying all of my monthly bills, which doesn't inclued cable because I can't afford it, I have only $100.00 left which goes to gas. I'm paying rent, electric, car insurance, day care, gas heat, phone, and college loans. I've tried to get food stamps, but because I make so much money I only get $80.00 a month which doesn't buy a lot of food. I make too much money to get daycare vouchers. I might be able to get some help with housing but the waiting list is like 8 years because of all the lazy people who don't want to work and get to live for free as long as they keep having babies. I am really struggling and there is no help for me because I choose to work.

biosmiles said...Of course it has to do with race, because race is related to poverty, and poverty is related to education, and amount of education is related to number of children overall, and particularly at a young age. This isn´t to say it is related to race because black girls are just looking for a welfare check, but rather let´s start funding these schools well, and actually give them REAL opportunities for other options, better options.
