New Drug Approved to Give Lice the Heave-Ho
There's a very quick way to get rid of head lice.
Shave your kid's head and take a scouring pad to her bald scalp.
But if you're worried about how this might affect cheerleader tryouts, you can always try this new stuff just approved by the Federal Drug Administration.
The makers of Natroba Topical Suspension 0.9% boast that the product, which you apply directly to the scalp, can get rid of lice in 10 minutes.
The website WebMD reports that the drug's safety and effectiveness have been proven to the FDA's satisfaction in two studies, in which some 500 people received a 10-minute treatment with Natroba.
If the wee beasties were still milling about a week later, another application was tried. Almost 90 percent of the participants were beastie-free within a week.
About 55 percent of members in a control group who didn't get Natroba were still subletting their scalps.
Side effects, according to the FDA, included redness and irritation of the eyes.
Head lice are generally considered icky. They feed on human blood, but, not being as photogenic as Robert Pattinson, there are no movies about angst-ridden teenage lice. However, they are more like real teens than the vampires on "Twilight."
Think of the scalp as a shopping mall. Lice aimlessly hang out there all day. They don't cause trouble or spread disease. They're just hanging out. They'd text each other if they had the technology.
They're more annoying than anything else.
"Natroba provides another option for the topical treatment of head lice infestations, which are especially prevalent in the pediatric population," Julie Beitz of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research tells WebMD. "Head lice is a common problem among school children in the United States."
The makers of Natroba -- ParaPro LLC of Carmel, Ind. -- tell WebMD their new stuff should be available by June.
Oh, just one thing.
Natroba has not been approved for children under age 4. So you still might want to shave their heads.
