How Important is Middle School?

According to the Associated Press, Bush feels strongly that middle school is a very important period of a child's education that is not getting enough attention. The program, Middle School Matters, "will develop, implement, test and scale a school transformation model that enables middle schools to achieve their mission of ensuring students have the required academic foundation to successfully complete high school," according to the George W. Bush Presidential Center website.
"We know now from research that a lot of kids that drop out in high school really drop out in middle school," the former first lady tells the AP. "They just leave in high school."
What do you think? How important is middle school?

Good luck trying to bring a female child to full term in China. Scary what goes on there. Be thankful you live in this land, or do us all a favor and move :-)

It was said that history would be kind to President Bush, and after the election of Obama, one can certainly believe this to be true. Best wishes to President Bush and Laura for being sensitive and caring, not something that can be attributed to the guy who sits in the Oval Office and dictates.

Now in my state ( born here ) what about our governor Rick Perry and the politicians who use our lottery ( general funds ) for hip pocket money when it was voted in for SCHOOLS, TEACHERS, and ROADS. What the hell is going on when our schools or either closing or fireing teachers, granted some need to be run off, but the ones to go will be our better teachers because they make and earn more money ??????
Look at this Larua Bush in your quest for answers and another article I read about Michelle Rhee who will be good help and should know and understand what our lottery was intended for in Texas.
What about it Governor Perry ???
What about it you political idiots with greed in your vains ????
What about using the funds for what they where voted in for and intended for ????
Thats my story, that is the truth, so what is your problems ?????

I feel the government needs to stay out of it for this reason.

The only difference between her efforts and that of our current first lady is that she never had the moronic response by Sarah Palin going behind her and trying to undermine her message and promoting a platform that illiteracy is patriotic. Michelle Obama wants to bring awareness to childhood obesity and Sarah Palin shows up at an elementary school with sugar cookies, since being obese in America is somehow patriotic. Laura Bush never had to contend with the moron crowd arguing against her efforts.

Patricia said...I agree with the thinking that middle school being a crucial educational step. Many middle schools have seperate classes for seperate subjects which potentially provides a different routine than grammer schools. For many students the shift in routine might seem overwhelming. I think that if there were some type of prepareness given and required prior to the school year starting, that alone may be helpful. Sort of a meet and greet, walk around, get to know your classes, teachers and learn what is to be expected prior to chattling the kids through their first day of school and new routine.
Just a thought.

tara said...So, since first ladies are fascist for suggesting our youth do anything these days, I wonder how long will it be before Sarah Palin shows up at her local middle school with "ignorance is patriotic" handbooks to counter this unconstitutional push by the former first lady to get kids learning. I mean, Michelle Obama suggesting that kids should go out and play to help combat obesity prompted free sugar cookies supplied by Sarah Palin....how will she combat Laura Bush's interference with our middle school kids?

A Mother said...When will parents start acting like parents, rather than wanting their child to be their "buddy" and to be allowed to do whatever he or she feels like doing, since it is their "right"?
Bull!
Children are being raised without having restraints of any kind on behavior and wind up thinking the world revolves around them. Thus, they have no respect for authority and rules, since they have not received training from their parents in following rules and, many times, civilities.
Is your child one of those who run around in the stores, playing with and bothering things that they should not even be allowed to touch? Maybe you are one of those parents who says, "Now, honey, don't do that," yet who makes no effort at making sure the child "stops that." After all, these actions are what the undisciplined child WANTS to do, and so must not be restrained by the parent--or, especially, by anyone else--or so the parent seems to think.
Middle school teachers have to contend with these undisciplined children, who cause disruptions throughout the school day, stealing teaching and learning time from the teacher and other students.
When, oh when, are the children going to be made to respect others and to behave like humans should behave?
It's time the rest of us no longer have to be surrounded with rude, unruly, undisciplined, self-centered children. Those children who do know how to behave in public places, such as the classrooms, are a joy to the rest of the people around them.
So much for my two-cents worth...
Signed,
A Mother

Evi said...Very well put! I feel sorry for many elementary school, middle school, and even high school teachers who have to contend with the spoiled, undisciplined, and egotistical children whose parents never corrected them either at home or in public. They steal precious time from the students who know what acceptable behavior is and who are at school to get an education, not just to show off and hog the precious classtime for attention.
