Try This: How Do You Deal With Nightmares and Monsters Under the Bed?
For some kids, sleep is a peaceful time to snuggle up with a good stuffed animal. For others, sleep is a time when the monsters come out from under the bed. Scary nightmares seem real and can be traumatizing to kids.
These New York moms share some tips on how to comfort kids after nightmares. One creative mom suggests squirting "monster spray" under the bed to kill the creepy imaginary creatures.
The experts at KidsHealth recommend a few practices to prevent nightmares:
1. Develop a routine. Put your kids to bed at the same time every night and try to limit naps during the day.
2. Sleep with a favorite stuffed animal.
3. Use a nightlight so that if they wake up afraid, they will immediately see familiar things.
4. Keep your door open so they know you are close by and accessible.

Grace said...I did this with the original Lysol aerosol can because I hated the scent so I never bought it. When I did, I put a label on it that said "Monster Spray" and it worked wonders every time. That was over 25 years ago. Now, when I do use Lysol, my kids say that it smells like the "Monster Spray."

But we would open a book and read a recipe - a dash of salt - 12 oz warm water - 1 squirt of lemon juice - etc. My son sprayed his monster spray on his window sill, around his bed and at his door! He's 22 now and normal! LOL - he still remembers his monster spray and how much it comforted him! :)

After that, all I had to do was be certain I left the door opened slightly which became "just like last night",... and he was cool. He hates for me to remind him of that event. He is now 22 years of age!

I told her, and her brother and sister that monsters were afraid of smell of mint, especially the type in toothpaste. They took up brushing their teeth regularly......the girl did tend to smear it on the door handle of her bedroom at night. I heard years later that it worked real well at keeping them out of her room. I gave her a defense against the unknown. I feel proud!

I remember when my kids would have nightmares, I would simply let them get in bed with me and we would cuddle until they fell asleep then I would put them back in their own bed.

Karen said...I cannot believe how everyone is using Monster Spray. My children are in there mid-40's now and I used to make up a spray bottle of water with a few drops of green food color and used a marker the label as MONSTER SPRAY. I wish that I had patented it back then. I have actually seen spray cans of Monster spray in stores. I could be rich. Well such is the story of my life.

Works also with grandchildren and great grandchildren

John said...We solved the problem by getting our daughter to help grab the monster from under the bed and throwing it out the front door. It became a fun game and eventually she told us to let the monster sleep there.

Gnc said...Taibi, disembodied spirits are not monsters. I saw disembodied spirits and still do from time to time. I used to tell them I was sleeping and they needed to go someplace else. They usually did.
If they are the intimidating kind, smudge sticks bother them. Not sure why. But a lost soul is not a monster, it's a lost soul. This is a great time to teach your children that they have the ultimate control and don't have to allow them access.

Gnc said...My sister would get scared so I'd come into the room like a bull in the china closet, turn on the light and yell at the monster by getting on my knees and chastizing him.
My sister would laugh. Then I'd say, Okay, you know what, there are no monsters. There's only one window and one door and they didn't open or close. I also told her that they make them up on TV just to scare people for MONEY!
Then I sad and if you think they get bigger and smaller, just to get around me, they couldn't do that on TV so how can they do that now! SHe just giggled and went back to sleep.
Never complained again. Some logic, some fantasy, some humor. IT worked.

AR said...I would never validate we have monsters in the house. My personal opinion is, you say to your child, "we do not allow monsters in our house so no reason to check under the bed or closet......" In doing
so - checking, etc... and only again in my opinion only validates there could be one! After a few times of not giving in just might work. That is just me another parent's view point. Think it through, does it not make sense? Good Luck!

sally said...Oh, AR...a little fun with fantasy makes a more interesting childhood. I don't see it as a big thing to giggle with your child while you spray a little "monster spray" around their room. Kids are so filled with stress these days, having a few moments of frivolity with Mom or Dad before bedtime to tame their fears isn't going to validate their belief in monsters any more than giving them a basket of candy and eggs at Easter validates that a male rabbit (Peter) lays eggs.
My kids are 37 and 40 and grew up healthy, normal and responsible even after having experienced the wonder of monster spray...which they are now using for their own children to chase away their fears.

Mosh Mann said...I understand your point, but on the other hand, maybe the monsters are in the childrens head. Meaning nightmares. If some nice smelling air freshener can chase those monsters away it is worth the cost.
