Try This: How Do You Deal With Nightmares and Monsters Under the Bed?
For some kids, sleep is a peaceful time to snuggle up with a good stuffed animal. For others, sleep is a time when the monsters come out from under the bed. Scary nightmares seem real and can be traumatizing to kids.
These New York moms share some tips on how to comfort kids after nightmares. One creative mom suggests squirting "monster spray" under the bed to kill the creepy imaginary creatures.
The experts at KidsHealth recommend a few practices to prevent nightmares:
1. Develop a routine. Put your kids to bed at the same time every night and try to limit naps during the day.
2. Sleep with a favorite stuffed animal.
3. Use a nightlight so that if they wake up afraid, they will immediately see familiar things.
4. Keep your door open so they know you are close by and accessible.

Flyer said...When I was little (around 3) my nanny decided to take me to the mummy movie. It traumatized me and I was sure mummies and the scarab beetles would come for me I could barely sleep and would wake my parents up so they could protect me. One day my mom came across this "anti monster spray" It was just bubblegum scented perfume but i sprayed it everywhere i thought there were monsters. It made me feel alot better sleeping in my room, i recommended this to my older sis & it has worked for her really well.

When my daughter did have a nightmare, I told her the dreamcather must be full and would take it down, take it outside and shake it out. she would go back to bed with no problems!

janette said...when my daughter was afraid of night-time monsters, i told her that they had all gone home to bed for the night so they could get up in the morning to go to monster school just like she gets up and goes to school. and of course all the monsters we ever allow in our house are nice monsters anyhow and they are not scary. it worked for us,.

D said...When my son started having monster fears, I firmly insisted that monsters were not allowed in the house because they made a mess. When he questioned or objected, I listened to what he said, and again firmly reminded him that I simply did not allow monsters in the house so there was no way they could be hiding under the bed or closet or anywhere else. It worked.

sue ellen said...In our house we would do a "monster search" together 1st with monster spray (water in a sprayer bottle with a few drops of my husband's aftershave). The kids would spray the bottle while I assisted by going holding up bedskirts and opening closet doors. Then I left the bottle on the nightstand just in case. Then we read a book and it was lights out. Worked great! Neat to see many folks also had Monster spray.

It's cheaper than getting a shrink for your traumatized child. Leave the closet door hang open. If you and the rest of the family can afford the loss of sleep go ahead and make yourselves miserable.
In addition to leaving on the light, I sprayed the sides of the bed and the rugs with lavander water and called it angel spray. Angels love that smell and they watch over the room all night.

He really was scared and mommy had to reassure him that it was "just a movie". After he fell asleep-with the light on, my brother and myself went in his room with white T shirts stretched over heads so we looked like ghosts. We made some noise and woke him up. He was scared -hitless and he wet his pants! We still laugh about it to this day. Even my father thought it was funny!

cja4jc said...When I was little I wasn't ever scared of monsters in my room, but there were A LOT of monsters chasing me in my dreams (and no, I didn't ever watch scary movies!). So, one day my mom gave me a "magic (invisible) ring" and told me all I had to do was say "stop" to the monsters and turn my ring, and that would turn my "dream monsters" into jello or marshmallows, or whatever I wanted them to, and then I could eat the monsters. And the funny thing is, it actually worked. I think the "magic ring" helped make me aware of my dreams and that I could control my dreams even while I was dreaming.

Bethany said...When I was a little girl, my brother (older by 2 years) and I were always scared of monsters. my parents took an old spray bottle and put a picture of a monster with a big red "X" across it on the bottle and they said it was monster repellent. What it really was is Odo Ban. It "kept the monsters away" and made the bedroom smell good. We sprayed it around the room and under the beds. It was a win-win.

Mark said...When my twins were very young, 3 or 4, they told me one afternoon that they were afraid of monsters in their room. I responded with "WHAT, there are monsters in your room?" And they shook their heads yes. I charged down the hall to their room, slammed the door and proceeded to beat the monsters to a pulp. Slamming pillows on the bed, yelling at them telling them, to get out....Lots of noise...finally after I had beaten the monsters to a pulp I came out of the room covered in sweat and my boys were waiting in the hall. I looked them in the eye and told them "Daddy took care of it, if you have any more trouble let me know." I got to big hugs and the monsters never came back. Children just need to know that you will protect them from any monster...and monsters go away.

1. made the dog sleep with me
2. lock the closet.
3. took the legs off the bed.
and finished it up with, "Now, you know nothings under the bed, and if there's anything in the closet, I sure hope it can hold it till morning, till I let the dog out..... worked for ME.... :)
