The Word 'Retard': Stop Using It

Let's say that in honor of Spread The Word To End The Word Day, which was this week, you decide to do a little project: For a few days you will message people on Twitter who use the word "retard" and let them know the r-word is derogatory to people with disabilities.
You don't actually expect the word to disappear anytime soon or that people will instantly chop it out of their vocabularies. But maybe, just maybe, you can raise a little awareness. You will set up alerts for tweets that contain "retard."
And you will find that there are so many mentions of the word -- thousands a day -- this could be your full-time job. People in the U.S., England, Germany, the Netherlands, and Kuwait say the word. Men, women, teens (lots and lots of teens), people of all races and all spelling abilities.
You will not fault people for their use of the r-word, because the term has become slang. They don't mean to malign people with disabilities. Heck, you used to call annoying situations "retarded" before you understood.
You have no problem with the words "stupid" or "dumb" or worse. Sure, call your friends names if you'd like, it's your conversation. But maybe you don't have to toss around the word "retard." Or say even worse things:
You'd expect some to be defensive, as the very act of tweeting at them is confrontational, even though you try to keep your tweets even-handed: Hi. Mom of kids with disabilities here. The word "retard" is demeaning. But still, you will be surprised by how people dig in their heels:
And because for the first time in your life, you fear how people may one day treat your son when you are not around to protect him. You will feel sorry you started this project. But you will not be able to stop. Those alerts for "retard" will keep popping up. Forty six alerts, 373 alerts, 1,452 when you wake up one morning.
And you will keep tweeting: Hi. Mom of kid with disabilities here. Would u help end the use of the word "retard"? It hurts. http://www.r-word.org. Some people will use rationale ...
But some will inspire you to keep going:
He won't give up either:
And then:
And you will feel a little bit of hope. The day you are done, you will get an email from one Lars who tells you that last week his organization launched The Social Challenge.
Through that site, you can anonymously "challenge" Twitter r-word users. But then, you will feel proud that you did this on your own. For all the times you felt sick to your stomach to see a string of smiling faces jokingly calling people "retard," for all the nasty responses you got and for all the non-responses, you will know that even if you've changed a few people's minds, your efforts will have been worth it.
But you will not be able to stop looking.

Nicole said...If you don't know the difference between the N word and the R word, you need to do your homework. No one ever uses the word retard to harm a handicaped person. They simply use it as a term. A word. The N word, on the other hand, is/was a word of hate. A word which has so much more meaning of an entire era of slavery, abuse and ignorance.

It tore my heart out when other people, mostly her age, called her retarded. She did not understand why they wanted to hurt her because she was always good to others and thought they would be the same to her. And for the record, she made straight A's thru school and college. Only when you knew her would you realize she did not deserve to be hurt like that. The older she got, the more people would come to her defense. But, it would still hurt so much that I know you people don't understand and won't unless you walk a mile in her shoes. Or mine. I applaud what this Mother is trying to do, because I understand the hurt. I will and have done my part and will continue to try to make people understand, as I do, that you can be an unkind person without even realizing how much, just by using that word directed at someone.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, MOM.

You certainly have everything figured out "by the book".
Someday some loved one will be in a car accident and have a brain injury that will make them a "retard". That someone could be you! How would you like to be a "man about town" one day and the next day you are are having someone change your diapers? Are you going to like it when people look at you and call you a retard?

livelywife said...@bjay and desert...Obviously you read no further than to see that I use that word. You did NOT read that I use it in context: ie to RETARD timing on a vehicle. If you cannot read and comprehend any better than that, then I will assume that you are of an elementary school level, and therefore really don't need to be commenting in the first place. However, I will take one more minute to point out, had you followed the entirety of this portion of the comments, I do have developmentally disabled relatives and friends, and would you care to know how they are referred to? AS FAMILY, OR FRIENDS, depending on the person. Or, is that too much for you to grasp. I would NEVER use the word retard in reference to anyone, except perhaps myself in a particularly stupid moment. If you want to take offense at that, it's a completely free country. Just respect my same right to use what words I wish. I guarantee you that you do not have to be developmentally disabled to be stupid...Stupid is as stupid does.

Try doing something real, rather than keeping the illusion alive that you're actually doing something by being insulted. You're NOT. Hug a kid or something and shut up.-

PS. This also goes for the words obese, chubby, plump, & fluffy. ;-)

Mentally challanged didn't seem to fit her disabilities, of which she had many. I did not believe that using the word retarded was derogatory, it described her mental capabilities to family, friends, and aquaintences. People just understood and were just as compassionate, and empathetic as I expected them to be. I am 61, my sister was 65. Is this debate of terminology a generational phenomena or part of this politically correct language that I don't always agree with?

Wendy said..."retard" is, by definition, to slow down or progress slower than usual. It has been stigmatized BY society and, if it were to disappear from the English language tomorrow, soiciety would promptly begin to stigmatize whatever "politically correct" word with essentially the same meaning you applied to people who are slower to process things than the average member of society. However, these "don't say 'retard' folks often get into such a lather about the use that they often attack people who are using the term in a technically correct, no-stigma-intended form.

Retarded is a medical term and indicates an I.Q. of 65 or less. The term helps to stop repeated testing of a individual as they move through life.

Jackie said...As it is defined "retard" is not insulting, it's just informational. The way people use it now is derrogatory, of course i'm not refering to everyone. But seriously, why get so angry about your right to use that word? Why not just be nice, and try to be sensitive to people who have so much going against them in their every day lives? Don't they have enough to deal with, without you getting up in arms about your right to use that word? No one is saying you are going to be banned from free speech, they are just asking that you be sensitive.
