Does It Bother You When Celebrities Have Children Out of Wedlock?
News that actor Ryan Phillippe might be a father again (he already has kids with his ex-wife Reese Witherspoon), reminds us of how many celebrities have children out of wedlock.
It's true: Unexpected pregnancies happen. But, unmarried celebrities seem to have children more often than us regular folk. One prominent recent example is Natalie Portman, who walked the red carpet at the Oscars while pregnant, and then won Best Actress.
Does it bother you, as it does Mike Huckabee, when celebrities have children out of wedlock? Do they set a bad example for our kids? Or is it just none of our business?

Alicia said...It's 2011. You know longer need a marriage certificate in order to be in a longterm committed relationship. In fact, considering Hollywood track records of divorce, it's cheaper in the long run to just forgo the wedding entirely, because the ceremony doesn't make a couple permanent.
The majority of kids really don't model their life off Hollywood. They'll make their own decisions about whether or not they believe in marriage or want to get married or have children or adopt. By the time they're older teens/adults, they won't care what Natalie Portman did anymore. They'll either base their lives off what you modeled or come to their own conclusions about how to live. Celebs don't factor into it.

They send lots of messages we eventually adapt to, even if we didn't believe in them at first. That's why we should be more careful what we watch or listen to.
That fact that out-of-wed pregnancy bothers me isn't the main issue for me. Its the idea of "having it all." Let's face it, the reason why most of these women continue to have a career is because they have nannies. I can't think of any mom who could BOTH work full-time AND be home to take care of the kids. So the working moms miss spending more time with their kids, and stay-at-home moms miss adult company. The idea of having it all is very tempting, but not realistic.

I'm so sick of reading things like this. If you're worried about what kind of example celebs set for your kids, get off your lazy butt and set your own example. I know this is a new idea and all but you should parent your own children. Why do you expect celebs and the media to do it for you?
