Girl, 9, Gets Hit by Truck, Saves Her Little Sister's Life
Filed under: In The News
Sisterly love took on a whole new meaning for Anaiah Rucker last month, when the 9-year-old girl saved her little sister's life by letting herself get hit by a pickup truck.
Anaiah and her 5-year-old sister, Camry, were crossing the street to catch the bus for school when the accident happened, ABC affiliate WSBTV in Madison, Ga., reports.
"I love her more than anything," Anaiah told the station from her Atlanta hospital room. "I pushed my sister out of the way so she wouldn't get hit."
Morning Express reports Anaiah nearly died from her injuries, which included two broken legs -- the left leg was amputated, a broken neck and spleen damage. She also lost a kidney.
Anaiah tells WSBTV it was raining that day, that she looked both ways and thought they were clear to enter the street.
"I saw the truck and I was like, 'No!' " Andrea Taylor, the girls' mother who was watching from her porch, tells WSBTV. "I seen my daughter kinda snatch my 5-year-old back, and if it wasn't for that, my 5-year-old would have ... I don't think she would have made it."
The truck driver was not charged in the incident, according to the network.
WSBTV reports Anaiah is scheduled to be released today, and police cars and fire trucks from Madison will provide an escort home where it will be Anaiah Rucker Day.
Hailed as a hero, Anaiah tells WSBTV her motives were simple.
"I thought she was too young," she tells the network. "She's my sister. I love her."

I see them running threw parking lots, accross streets, etc with the parents not even paying attention. Years past I can remember holding my parents hand or getting yelled at or smacked for trying to run ahead or tail behind. Parents need to look after the children, it is a mean world. Love your children and worry about them shows that you care as a parent. I pray for both little girls and their parents. God bless.

Alicia said...And then miss the bus? I realize you were trying to be helpful, but that is a silly comment. The girls did everything right before preparing to cross the street and if the truck hydroplaned or something, having the bus there wouldn't've saved her. After all, mom had already taken the precaution of watching from the porch while allowing her (almost pre-teen) daughter, who is obviously a mature and intelligent child, have some independence and responsibility. It's heartbreaking that in this case, that good bit of parenting ended horribly for this sweet and compassionate little girl. I hope she recovers and applies the same heart and wit to overcoming her new hurtles that she used to save her sister.

Kathy said...Several comments about the story...
1. Anaiah is too young to be walking across the street. Where's mom and why wasn't she out there with them.
2. Why wasn't there a school crossing guard?
3. Was she crossing the street with a crosswalk? and if she was, did it have blinking lights to alert drivers?
She is a very brave 9 year old, and I wish her all the best in her recovery. More than likely, something will change because of this accident.
We live in a society where we drive as fast as we can, we talk/text while driving, and we are always late no matter where we are going. Now is the time to slow down and think before we act. This situation could have been prevented. And it is unfortunate that this little girl was critically injured.

MissKari said...READ the flippin STORY. The mother was outside as they crossed the street from THEIR HOUSE. School crossing guards don't come to your house. There are no "flashing lights" outside of their house. It was a bus STOP. Meaning: a place you go and wait for the bus to pick you up and transport you. (rolling my eyes) Here you are in this tragic story quick to point the finger and blame, all the while having no facts or idea what you're talking about.

Marie said...What a great, encouraging, refreshing story for a change!!! God Bless this brave little angel! Such a beautiful thing to do! Having 3 sisters I know exactly how she felt!
For the geniuses who comment about their mom standing on the porch.....please, save it! You don't have all the facts, or the details! Damn....so many are too quick to judge!! For all you know, she herself was sick, or maybe inside with someone who was sick, etc. Or, maybe none of the above! Bottom line, who the hell cares? It wasn't the point of the story. ...2 innocent sweet little sisters are alive!!

Jeff MacKay said...Very well said Marie! When situations like this occur, it immediately causes many people to scramble around pointing fingers in order to give reason. Instead, why not just pause for a moment, close your eyes, take a deep breath and rejoice in the beauty of such an incredible act of love and heroism!

It's only in the past decade that parents have become so paranoid that they won't allow their children out of the house alone until they are old enough to drive--and then wonder why they go off the rails.

Patricia Laman said...I'm sorry to say this, but the Mother is to blame allowing a 9 year old to escort a 5 year old across a street. Unfortunately, so many young parents today are just like Aniah;s Mom.

Marisol said...Patrica, Patrica, Patrica, why are you blaming the mother? I'm sure this was a daily routine for these children. Nine year olds in NYC takes the subway alone. Nine is indeed old enough to know how to cross the street. It was just a bad day. You can't blame their mother for God's work (meaning the rain). For this little girl to have that kind of love in her heart for another human being saids a lot about how she is being raised by her mother. Stop pointing fingers.

What an amazing story. The love that she must have for her sister, and the mindset she had in that moment is beautiful.
Just remember Anaiah, when you two are older and she's getting on your nerves or won't share, you can remind her what you did for her ;-)
I have no doubt that all of your wounds will heal over time. There is obviously a lot of love in you family and community. You're amazing!
