Girl, 9, Gets Hit by Truck, Saves Her Little Sister's Life
Filed under: In The News
Sisterly love took on a whole new meaning for Anaiah Rucker last month, when the 9-year-old girl saved her little sister's life by letting herself get hit by a pickup truck.
Anaiah and her 5-year-old sister, Camry, were crossing the street to catch the bus for school when the accident happened, ABC affiliate WSBTV in Madison, Ga., reports.
"I love her more than anything," Anaiah told the station from her Atlanta hospital room. "I pushed my sister out of the way so she wouldn't get hit."
Morning Express reports Anaiah nearly died from her injuries, which included two broken legs -- the left leg was amputated, a broken neck and spleen damage. She also lost a kidney.
Anaiah tells WSBTV it was raining that day, that she looked both ways and thought they were clear to enter the street.
"I saw the truck and I was like, 'No!' " Andrea Taylor, the girls' mother who was watching from her porch, tells WSBTV. "I seen my daughter kinda snatch my 5-year-old back, and if it wasn't for that, my 5-year-old would have ... I don't think she would have made it."
The truck driver was not charged in the incident, according to the network.
WSBTV reports Anaiah is scheduled to be released today, and police cars and fire trucks from Madison will provide an escort home where it will be Anaiah Rucker Day.
Hailed as a hero, Anaiah tells WSBTV her motives were simple.
"I thought she was too young," she tells the network. "She's my sister. I love her."

As for the girl's age, I was old enough at 7 to care for my baby sister at home while my mom was there, some kids are born old.
I was 12 when I walked her a mile to kindergarten. A VW beetle was broadsided, and slowly rolled toward us. I started to hightail it out of there, then remembered my sis! Went back and got her out of the way, the VW landed where we had been standing.
I still occasionally took her hand crossing streets when we were in our 20's, from habit.

Mindy said...Wow, all I can think is what would our world be like if there were more adults with the heart and courage that this child has shown.
For the negative comments about the mother - while I feel it's safer to walk with children across streets, maybe this mother had an infant to watch or perhaps another reason for watching from the porch...we don't know her circumstances. Personally, I think she must have done something right to raise a daughter with so much love for her sister that she would risk (and almost lose) her own life to save her sister. As for the negative comments about the bus and the truck - the bus wasn't there yet, read the article again; and the article said it was raining and the children couldn't see the truck, so what makes you think the truck could see the children...the area where it happened might have had a blind spot, maybe the truck hit the brakes and hydroplaned. The point is, when you don't have absolutely ALL the information then you shouldn't jump to conclusions...just thank God that both these children are alive!

I can't help but wonder why mom didn't help her young daughters cross the street...maybe this tragic incident could have been prevented or maybe not. My mom walked my little sister & I to the bus stop up until our jr year of highschool! (no lol) ..... Very unfortunate but a miracle/blessing that both girls are alive.

That's the problem with kids today. Too many parents are "on the porch watching" instead of parenting
So what do you want? Mom to walk the kid across the street every day til she was 18? Do you think that mom follow the kids around after school when they go out to play with their friends?
Did you parents have any children that actually developed a brain?
