Overweight Moms, Children Think They're Thinner Than They Really Are, Study Shows

Actually, to be honest, it's not so much that they make you look fat. You are fat.
Very few women can pull off polyester stretch pants with the word "delicious" emblazoned across the rear end, and girlfriend? You are not one of them.
Don't worry. It's a big club. With plenty of refreshments.
USA Today reports many a big mama and her horizontally challenged offspring are not as svelte as they think.
Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center in New York asked 111 women and 111 children questions about their age, income and body size, and also measured their height and weight. They were asked to identify their body shapes based on silhouettes representing underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity.
Researchers found:
• 66 percent of the mothers were overweight or obese.
• 39 percent of kids were too heavy.
• 82 percent of the mammoth mommies underestimated their weight when looking at the silhouettes; 42.5 percent of overweight women did the same. About 13 percent of normal-weight women thought of themselves as thinner than they were.
• 86 percent of the corpulent kiddies underestimated their weight, compared with 15 percent of normal-weight kids.
• 47.5 percents of moms with fat kids thought their children were at a healthy weight.
• 41 percent of the children thought their moms could lay off the donuts and lose weight.
Pediatrician Claire McCarthy of Children's Hospital Boston tells USA Today roughly half of her patients are fat.
"Parents come in and say that their child is too thin, but on the growth charts, he's a normal weight or even slightly overweight," she tells the newspaper. "There are so many overweight children out there that a normal-weight child looks thin. The norm has become overweight."
As America gets fatter, people could get a warped attitude toward their fattitude, lead researcher Nicole Dumas, an internal medicine resident at Columbia, tells USA Today.
"We're working on accruing a larger sample size to see if it applies to everyone," Dumas tells the newspaper. "The take-home message is that to address the obesity epidemic, we have to address body image misperception."

Carl Johnson said...Besides us American's being physically fat...... there seems to be a sharp increase in Americans being "attitude fat" ego-wise too. America seems to be a much more cocky culture today and perhaps that has something to do with our general lack of concern about our appearance.

BillBT3 said...I agree with your comment. It has become "ok" in our culture to accept obesity as the new norm. This was not the case 20 or 30 years ago when fat people were shunned and made fun of.

eyes wide shut said...Today's parents were the generation that was brought up on fast food. They are of the culture that shops for junk food and goes out and dines on junk food. It was how they were brought up. Ever wonder why you don't see a Burger King, MacDonalds, Wendy's, Jack in the Box go out of business? They have been seducing that generation for years..Ever see a Dunkin Donuts fold up? Lazy people eat JUNK.....The people that exercise are the ones that eat right...Parents that don't exercise can't expect to have their kids exercise...But they will go out and buy their kids an Xbox, sit them in front of the TV with it and serve them pure CRAP...If the sun is out, the kids should be outside regardless of the temp. Wonder how many of these families sit around to a good healthy dinner come super time...Food shop and cook seem to be a thing of the PAST.....

Some say "oh I can't afford healthy food" well, maybe it's hard to afford the organic places that charge a lot, but if you stop buying the fast food and junk food you'll find that buying chicken instead of chicken nuggets, or vegetables in place of chips and cookies becomes affordable.
Also I wish the clothing industry would stop changing sizes on the clothes. Some go one way and some go another. Especially in womens clothes

Wearing tight Black colored polyester stretch pants that makes your fat folds hang out over the top or makes the legs look like overstuffed sausage about to burst DOES NOT IN ANY WAY MAKE YOU LOOK SLIMMER.

Plus, they are the only thing clean on the last day before wash day. Further, who knighted you as a Brad Pitt or a Denzel look a like? Why do they ugliest males always want to bad mouth women? Oh yeah. Misdirection. Tomorrow just for variety the blue spandex and Vic I'll be thinking about you NOT! LOL

Like it matters to you- clearly you think fat people are disgusting and hideous, regardless of what they wear. The good news is that fat people are spared having nasty people like you in their lives. JENN- you should get counseling, becasue if you hate yourself that much as a fat person, you're not gonna like the skinny you either.

Danielle said...Funny you should mention this! I'm wearing black spandex pants right now! I love them! - BUT - I'm also heading to the gym in about 10 min and weigh 110 lbs.
This also has a flip side that most people don't consider. I'm in the healthy weight range for my height (5'4") yet people look at me and think I'm anorexic/sick. People I don't even know have even said something to me. Ww all pass judgement on each other, regardless of shape/size. It's something we all need to work on, myself included. Unfortunately, we live in a type of society that encourages this judgmental behavior.

Laura said...sounds like you fat chicks are a little offended by what Vicki is saying. Lets face it ladies, stop wearing clothing that doesn't fit. Whether or not you agree with Vicki, she is right, you look disgusting! We thin people don't even wear that stuff because even we don't look good in it. Comfort you say? Not believing that one either. We ALL know that the looser the clothing the more comfy it is, so.....

Laura said...Danielle, I hear that all the time too.... I'm 5'2 at 108lbs. I'll be munching down an ice cream and people say "don't you ever eat" Ummmm.... What the hell is this ice cream cone in my hand. I've never had anyone of a normal, healthy weight say anything, but always and constantly obese people have a rude jab.... I think it's to make themselves feel better about their eating habits or whatever.

KittyKat said...to all of you overweight people who want to bash on those who think being fat is disgusting.... it IS. being overweight runs in my family and so far, im the only one who has stayed a single digit pants size. honestly, its sad to see people EAT themselvs to death. like really... its not about looking in the mirror, its about having self respect for yourself enough to take care of your body. sooo dont get mad at us for saying these things. its true. get a reality check my friends, your body will thank you.

Paul said...Vicki, could have said it...differently. But the point being, what she says is true. I have some plus sized friends, some of them wear clothes that suit their body type, and they look good. They are confident and comfortable with their body type, and carry it well. Not to say they aren't striving to be slimmer, so that they are healthier. Then there are those friends who are still in complete denial. Saying that they don't feel and aren't that much overweight. When your about 5'4" and weight 180lbs, your overweight. That's not a jab, that's not being mean, that's just fact. I've even had some of these friends confess to me that wearing smaller sized clothing (like spandex), makes them feel slimmer and ultimately better about themselves. It's not comfort, it's psychological.
I don't blame those who's response to vicki's overly blunt comments as not exactly friendly. People do have feelings. But to harp on her about telling it like it is, as if it wasn't, isn't helping your cause any. You can wear all the smaller sized clothing you want, tell people your lighter than you really are. But what it comes down to, is your health is at a risk by being overweight. Try not to think of it as appearance. Think of it as life and death. Because it will be sooner or later if nothing is done about it.

Dharmalynn said...Nowhere in that article was the word "Dad", or any of it's various incarnations mentioned. And CERTAINLY not with anything as incredibly insulting as "Mammoth Mommies". Any child with two parents is bound to be influenced by both. It is sexist and mysoginistic to leave fathers off the hook like that.
