Overweight Moms, Children Think They're Thinner Than They Really Are, Study Shows

Actually, to be honest, it's not so much that they make you look fat. You are fat.
Very few women can pull off polyester stretch pants with the word "delicious" emblazoned across the rear end, and girlfriend? You are not one of them.
Don't worry. It's a big club. With plenty of refreshments.
USA Today reports many a big mama and her horizontally challenged offspring are not as svelte as they think.
Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center in New York asked 111 women and 111 children questions about their age, income and body size, and also measured their height and weight. They were asked to identify their body shapes based on silhouettes representing underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity.
Researchers found:
• 66 percent of the mothers were overweight or obese.
• 39 percent of kids were too heavy.
• 82 percent of the mammoth mommies underestimated their weight when looking at the silhouettes; 42.5 percent of overweight women did the same. About 13 percent of normal-weight women thought of themselves as thinner than they were.
• 86 percent of the corpulent kiddies underestimated their weight, compared with 15 percent of normal-weight kids.
• 47.5 percents of moms with fat kids thought their children were at a healthy weight.
• 41 percent of the children thought their moms could lay off the donuts and lose weight.
Pediatrician Claire McCarthy of Children's Hospital Boston tells USA Today roughly half of her patients are fat.
"Parents come in and say that their child is too thin, but on the growth charts, he's a normal weight or even slightly overweight," she tells the newspaper. "There are so many overweight children out there that a normal-weight child looks thin. The norm has become overweight."
As America gets fatter, people could get a warped attitude toward their fattitude, lead researcher Nicole Dumas, an internal medicine resident at Columbia, tells USA Today.
"We're working on accruing a larger sample size to see if it applies to everyone," Dumas tells the newspaper. "The take-home message is that to address the obesity epidemic, we have to address body image misperception."

Vick said...If the truth hurts then deal with it. I own a shop in a mall in a resort area of Tenn and I cannot even begin to tell you about all these huge gargantuan MAMMOTH MOMMIES I see hauling their baby hippos around and there is dad, an average looking guy stuck looking all dejected because he has a wife who wants to spend her life as a fat slob. Whats even worse is when you get close to mammath and her kids and have the misfortune to smell them. Its enough to make you retch. I guess obesity causes a lack of even minimal personal hygiene like bathing or wiping your a$$

wufs said...right on--Mammoth mommies says alot about the bias in this article. How often do I see pot-beliied, droopy drawed dads out trher (often unkepmt and smelly). So, where is the criticism of those dudes? IT seems always to hang on the chicks-if you can;t be thin, ladies, be dead. Obesity is a disease affecting only females and female children. How many anorexic BOYS do we read about? Never. Boys are perfect--they are clean, neat, well-dressed and coiffed, gentlemen with thr bodies of adonis: NOT. WHen Special K shows me a commercial with some freaked out man wagging his bone butt in last season's jeans for his neighbor, I will pay attention to this crap. Meanwhiel, goF yourselves, you whining, bigmouth a-holes who complain about spandex and overweight moms. Your whole issue is you know that it is soooo easy to gain and you fear it--so you attack the overweight. I mean, why do you care? No one complains about those sad scrawny mall rat gals whose space bertween their legs is so wide you can drive a mac truck thru them. They have NO asses and no meatr--they look like freakin biafran victims-skinny ugly chciks ought to get the hell out of the mall--thye are scaryry, man!

Being disgusted by people who are fat? Wow. Just wow. Must be really great to be that stunningly shallow and ignorant.

Lisa said...I think that the terms you used in the article "Overweight Moms, Children Think They're Thinner Than They Really Are, Study Shows"
was degrading and entirely unacceptible. Having been one of those overweight moms, I found it extremely offensive that you used the following terms: mammoth mommies, big mama and her horizontally challenged offspring, corpulent kiddies. As a person who has struggled with self estem and weight issues all my life and who finally did something about it by getting the lapband. Terms used like that to define the obesity are very demeaning. Not all women who are over weight are that way because of food issues. Some have become that way because of medications....ie. diabetes medication actually may make you gain weight as well as the DEPO shot. Did you research any to see if they have been that way all of their lives or were on medications that could induce weight gain. Please refrain from using those negative connotations. It doesn't help anyone who has weight issues.

emma said...A lapband? Seriously, are you mad or just on the other side of denial. You are looking for a quick fix, that will not show you or children good diet and discipline. Try therapy first, then the bloody diet. You are setting yourself up for failure if you dont try to get to the bottom of why you put hand to cookie to mouth. If you dont you are throwing your money away.

??? said...Have a weight problem? Go to a gym and stop eating bread. Can't afford to go to a gym? It's called a park, they are these magical places outside of a constructed building where you are actually allowed to walk and run around. Surprising isn't it? There are so many things one can do to stay healthy that its just plain silly that we have an obesity problem. And don't blame medications, because that's just an excuse. Now genetics are not an excuse, but that doesn't mean you can't talk to a doctor about staying at a healthy weight. Also we have this perception about sudden weight loss. THE BODY DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY. Do you even know ANYTHING about human anatomy? Speaking of which, medications have nearly a different affect on different people. If you know sooooo much about medication, you should have known this as well (remember results may VARY).

Jane said...When my daughter was 2 I took her to get a health checkup and in the office was a morbidly obese couple with their 2-year-old child who was so fat she waddled like a penguin. The nurse ripped into the couple for it, but I'm sure they could have cared less.
To me, this should be child abuse. This poor little girl couldn't even walk right at the young age of 2 for all the fat on her body already. How could parents not see this atrocity? They, and other parents like this, are killing their kids and getting away with it.

Mike said...Jane, are you in top physical shape yourself ?
There are genetics involved as well, people are overweight for a variety of reasons, of course there are some who eat themselves to to oblivion, but not all.
Your child abuse comment is a bit much don't you think ?

Pam said...No, abuse is not too strong a word for it. These examples of poor parenting should be held accountable for the pain and suffering that their very bad examples and teachings inflict on these innocent children. The lack of self control, and attitude of total entitlement often spills over to all aspects of their lives, crippling the child in so many ways, not just the inability to stop overeating.
This is a continuing cycle of abuse, often the poor parents learned it from their own parents. There is no excuse.Extremely rare medical conditions aside, it is simply a matter of self control. Learn to say no to impulses, learn that one is not entitled to that extra cookie. Solving the psychological reasons for overeating is essential.
