Overweight Moms, Children Think They're Thinner Than They Really Are, Study Shows

Actually, to be honest, it's not so much that they make you look fat. You are fat.
Very few women can pull off polyester stretch pants with the word "delicious" emblazoned across the rear end, and girlfriend? You are not one of them.
Don't worry. It's a big club. With plenty of refreshments.
USA Today reports many a big mama and her horizontally challenged offspring are not as svelte as they think.
Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center in New York asked 111 women and 111 children questions about their age, income and body size, and also measured their height and weight. They were asked to identify their body shapes based on silhouettes representing underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity.
Researchers found:
• 66 percent of the mothers were overweight or obese.
• 39 percent of kids were too heavy.
• 82 percent of the mammoth mommies underestimated their weight when looking at the silhouettes; 42.5 percent of overweight women did the same. About 13 percent of normal-weight women thought of themselves as thinner than they were.
• 86 percent of the corpulent kiddies underestimated their weight, compared with 15 percent of normal-weight kids.
• 47.5 percents of moms with fat kids thought their children were at a healthy weight.
• 41 percent of the children thought their moms could lay off the donuts and lose weight.
Pediatrician Claire McCarthy of Children's Hospital Boston tells USA Today roughly half of her patients are fat.
"Parents come in and say that their child is too thin, but on the growth charts, he's a normal weight or even slightly overweight," she tells the newspaper. "There are so many overweight children out there that a normal-weight child looks thin. The norm has become overweight."
As America gets fatter, people could get a warped attitude toward their fattitude, lead researcher Nicole Dumas, an internal medicine resident at Columbia, tells USA Today.
"We're working on accruing a larger sample size to see if it applies to everyone," Dumas tells the newspaper. "The take-home message is that to address the obesity epidemic, we have to address body image misperception."

VickieLyn said...The solution is common sense. Come on people..if you are looking for the magic word, pill or exercise, you are an idiot. Stop feeding yourself and your kids/family soooooooooooooooo much food. 1500 to 2000 calories daily and routine exercise......

ezmerasi said...Okay, I just gotta say something now. Firstly, yes, calories and exercise are very important. However, THEY ARE NOT EVERYTHING. As others have said, medical conditions, medications, genes, etc. also play a role. I know this for a fact because even though my diet is 1200 calories, only drink water except for special occasions, exercise at the gym at least 3-4 hours Mon-Fri (not counting just plain exercising by playing softball for years, walking pets, bicycling to stores) I was still a size 18 and at least 180 lbs. However, the moment I went off a medication and found a therapy for my chronic depression, I dropped to a size 4 within about 4 months. Once my depression came back, I went up to a 12 and am still working on it (recently became 10, yay :) but the point is, there is so much more to weight loss than just the normal stuff like exercise and calories. I firmly believe happiness, stress, medications, etc. play a much bigger role than people realize.
Also, diets do not work, what is needed is just a plain lifestyle change. Park at the end of the lot and walk, do cut your calories down a bit--these little changes make a huge difference over time. Processed foods are a huge problem, but I’m surprised no one has said anything about salt/sodium--this is the cause, as it is impossible to eat healthy when everything, even those "light" soups, have 30-40 percent salt--not to mention it's one of the biggest causes of the nations heart problems. It is alright to have processed foods, just not if they are your whole diet. Portion control is another problem, as many of us have simply gotten used to the bigger portions we're given at restaurants and fast food chains. Seriously, cut yours meal in half or even by a quarter and I bet you've already eaten your fill. If you're still hungry after 20-30 mins, then eat the rest.
Lastly, yes, this article is pretty mean to those overweight and does completely ignore the men. But that is actually the reason why you shouldn't take it all too seriously. Real news/articles, especially about science, are to be completely objective (without emotions/stereotypes/bias). True science articles only present the facts and what those facts imply/further research. By using such terms as "mammoth mommies" either this writer is working in an unfamiliar field or is simply failing at his job. If you really care about what this article says, then do some research yourself, because the author of this is far too biased to provide correct information. Also, I'm very curious as to where the information even came from (I highly doubt the article where the author got this information truly said "lay off the donuts"). The author mentions USA Today, but a sample of 111 moms and 111 kids is far, far too small for researchers to ever gain any valuable information, especially when taking location into consideration, as states vary greatly in the average weight of the people. To the author, your "research" is an insult to science and statistics and I truly hope you go back to school for some real journalism courses, because you need them.

VickieLyn said...ezmerazi, I know there is more to it. And you being depressed is an excuse. Pour yourself into exercise instead of sitting down and stuffing your face. I work very hard to stay healthy despite the hurdles. the amount or kind of Food, whether it is your addition or happy past time is still your choice. People are not just 10 to 15 lbs over weight---they are obese and are fostering obesity as the norm-----haven't you people seen Wally.

Mariana said...I'm Mexican. 17 years old, 5'5", 125lbs. I'm sure that the majority of the fat kids you see are not Mexican kids. I am far more healthy than many of the American kids I go to school with. Mexicans make meals at home because of our hardworking stay at home moms. A lot of American kids depend on fast food every day because mom can't cook much more than mac and cheese and burgers. Never in my life have I been obese and neither has my brother, father, mother, or cousins. Mexican kids can actually have healthier diets than American kids.

Melissa said...Why do all of these articles about overweight people have to be so offensive? Calling someone "mammoth" certainly isn't respectful. Why not just call them ugly and tell them they have no right to be treated with respect? No, being overweight isn't healthy, but that doesn't give someone the right to look down on them and call them degrading names.

Jean said...FAT is fat. Mammoth and disgustingly obese are a nice way of saying you are too fat to be human. I knew I was overweight (being in a 2x and 3x) but it wasn't until I saw my medical report where it said MORBIDLY OBESE that it hit home. Sometimes truth hurts. I am now a healthy size 12.

Felton said...At what point do we stop being nice to these kids. Do you realize the kids today will have a shorty life span than their parents? 1 st time ever. Why? because they are fat. Use whatever terms you wish. Stop being so nice. Im a Personal Trainer and Im so tired of seeing my clients going to a drive through after a workout, like it was earned.
I trained each morning at 5am. I dont feel bad for those that are too lazy to get out and workout, I do feel bad for people like myself that have to pay extra Insurance to off set the high medicial cost of the fatpeople

Babbling Brooke said...This article is ridiculously biased and the writing is almost laughable. Who approved this? Why must we condemn one section of society by telling them to "lay off the donuts" while patting another half of society on the back (to be honest, I almost regret being part of the 'skinny' group this author so clearly values). Tom Henderson also neglects to mention an entire group of people: the fathers! As he obviously doesn't fall into the "fat" or "skinny" mom group, he happily dishes out ridicule and derogatory remarks. Henderson, before you put down another group of people with biased comments and ill-considered remarks, find an author who can actually write and who knows what it is like to be part of that group. As a college professor and lifelong reader, I'm devastated at what our society now takes for "journalism."

Karen said...Babbling Brooke, I am so glad a woman of your education and updated knowledge spoke up. I am not an obese person, but I have seen how badly these people are treated and judged. Do you other mean spirited people think that they want to be this way. It is the same situation as a drug addict. Noone growing up thinks I want to be a junkie or obese. There are so many reasons for obesity. People assume it is due to over eating. Yes sometimes it is. Just like a person who is a drug addict or alcoholic there is a reason they abuse themselves. Another reason is that people who live below the povetry level can only afford food that is high in carbs and fat. I am sure their food budget only allows foods that are not good for them, but they have to survive and buy what can last them. Another reason some children and adults are overweight is due to organ transplants. They have to be on these anti rejection drugs that cause weight gain. Being in nursing I have seen it time after time.again. Be grateful you have healthly organs, however I am not sure your brains are up to par. I am appalled at the language used to describe obese people. I am sure that most of you have flaws, but educated people don't call them out to you. See how it feels if they did like comb over, buck teeth, balding, zit face, flat chested, needle dick, one pump chump, smelly snatch, big nose, four eyes, dumb blonde, nappy head, hairy nipples and arms on a woman, camel toe, tripod, nose hairs, death breath, sweat stains, loser, whore fag, dike and only a face a mother could love. How would that feel? Just because we can't always see it we know it is there. These people show their lack of knowledge, yet show their ignorance.
