Overweight Moms, Children Think They're Thinner Than They Really Are, Study Shows

Actually, to be honest, it's not so much that they make you look fat. You are fat.
Very few women can pull off polyester stretch pants with the word "delicious" emblazoned across the rear end, and girlfriend? You are not one of them.
Don't worry. It's a big club. With plenty of refreshments.
USA Today reports many a big mama and her horizontally challenged offspring are not as svelte as they think.
Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center in New York asked 111 women and 111 children questions about their age, income and body size, and also measured their height and weight. They were asked to identify their body shapes based on silhouettes representing underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity.
Researchers found:
• 66 percent of the mothers were overweight or obese.
• 39 percent of kids were too heavy.
• 82 percent of the mammoth mommies underestimated their weight when looking at the silhouettes; 42.5 percent of overweight women did the same. About 13 percent of normal-weight women thought of themselves as thinner than they were.
• 86 percent of the corpulent kiddies underestimated their weight, compared with 15 percent of normal-weight kids.
• 47.5 percents of moms with fat kids thought their children were at a healthy weight.
• 41 percent of the children thought their moms could lay off the donuts and lose weight.
Pediatrician Claire McCarthy of Children's Hospital Boston tells USA Today roughly half of her patients are fat.
"Parents come in and say that their child is too thin, but on the growth charts, he's a normal weight or even slightly overweight," she tells the newspaper. "There are so many overweight children out there that a normal-weight child looks thin. The norm has become overweight."
As America gets fatter, people could get a warped attitude toward their fattitude, lead researcher Nicole Dumas, an internal medicine resident at Columbia, tells USA Today.
"We're working on accruing a larger sample size to see if it applies to everyone," Dumas tells the newspaper. "The take-home message is that to address the obesity epidemic, we have to address body image misperception."

Having the child eating by himself is not family oriented.

No special meals. No Big allowances to buy Pizza on way home from school. They were taught to save for something good. No big bowls of chips and sweet soda watching TV. TV was a family affair at designated time allowed. We both worked but, we alternated our schedules to allow time to be with the kids, sure homework done, and made sure they had nutricious meals: all balanced. Not all starch or full of fat. It isn't hard, it is just planning and caring love. This article is not well thought out, sorry to say.

helema said...i give my kids a choice between healthy foods!! my kids would rather have a fresh cored apple fo rdesert than cookies and i subbed popcorn and chex 9with extra nuts added to make it more filling) in place of all the chips and cookies they ate before also i use alot of healthy things instead of deep fried in conola oil i shallow fry in coconut oil or olive oil or bake it!! i also choose cereals that are lower in sugar and fat than the generics with all the frosting on them. so it can be a good thing to have them choose between baked chicken or steak with alternative seasoning instead of alot of salt and when i can afford it i use unrefined seasalt when i need the salt or mabey some salad. my kids have no problem with healthy foods!! SO what is this about it being a bad idea to have a two year old choose what they can eat?

Rich said...What people do to themselves is truly a shame. I do understand that it is difficult for many to lose weight. What really bothers me though, is that most fat people don't give a crap if their kids get fat. They feed their kids crap and do not require their kids to get an adequate amount of exercise, so the cycle continues to perpetuate itself. And yes, I do understand that some people gain weight due to medications and medical reasons, but the reason the majority of people are overweight is that they simply eat too much, and they eat too much garbage food rather than healthy food, and they don't do anything that would come close to resembling exercise. It really is a shame and it will not only shorten their lives, but it diminishes their quality of life.

wufs said...rick, what hole did you fall out of? Children of overweight parents may be GENETICALLY disposed to being overweight. Kind of like you are genetically disposed to be like you are due to inbreeding.

GAlina said...to: 'wurf'. Let me guess: fat yourself, fat spouse, fat children and do not want to do anything about it? The more genetically PREdisposed your children are to obesity, the more you, as a consern parent should do about their eating habbits and work-out routine. Nobody talk about super-model figure, just maintain a healthful weight for your body type. It'll help them avoid type II diabetis and all the concequences it entails: high blood pressure, blindness, amputated limbs, frequent infections, kidnie failure.
Those who want to fix the problem, look for a solution; those who do not, look for an exuse.
Obesity may caused by a desease, but it is not a desease itself; most often in this country, it's a result of lazyness.

Kaitlyn said...This is the most idiotic piece of information I have ever heard.
You WANT children to identify themselves as FAT?
You WANT children to be forced into the complex that they must diet until they can't diet anymore?
This America is unhealthy due to eating disorders and disgusting ideals of the "healthy weight" people who think that they can control the size of every citizen.
You are a sick, disgusting being.

Kaitlyn said...You want to call obese people fat?
And mammoth?
My mom is overweight.
She was 98 pounds growing up. After she became pregnant, she developed gal stones. They became so bad that she had to have an emergency surgery.
Ever since, she has had chronic pancreatitis, causing her food to not break down.
She is overweight because of something she cannot handle.
She calls herself fat daily.
SHE CAN'T HELP IT.
You are the most rude person.
Go back to college, change majors, and never become a journalist.
You shouldn't be allowed to have children.

Many overweight mothers are overweight because they work, then when they get home they have to cook, clean and take care of the kids, who are running and screaming everywhere. They are so frazzled and tired, they have no time to prepare a healthy meal most of the time so they fix whatever is convenient, or call out. Usually high fat and sugar loaded meals. Who the hell has time to workout or even make a meal plan for that matter. We're burning the candle at both ends. Walk in our shoes for a minute before you start throwing disgusting names at people, jerk.

GAlina said...Well, teach your children some discipline, then, and have them help you cook a healthy meal. Will come in handy later on in their lives ( both, discipline and cooking). I grew up very poor, in an apartment with wooden stove and bathroom outdoors. My single Mom had to work 6 days a week to provide cheapest food available - and it still was healthful. I was helping her sinse the age of 5.
Those who want to fix the problem look for a solution. Those who do not, look for an exuse. Which one are you?

I just had to say that.
This article was written with an incredible amount of sarcasm, obviously from someone who has never been called fat in their lifetime.
While you may be a "healthy weight," you are definitely full of a brain that is incredibly ignorant.
I know many people that are overweight due to issues with their body. My own mother was 90 pounds until she became pregnant, and her galbladder decided to stop working. Since then, she has had pancreatitis chronically, meaning her food does not break down.
She has to have stomach surgery next week.
This article is THE most offensive thing I have ever read.
You obviously believe that all Americans with weight issues are lazy and repulsive.
YOU are repulsive.
Furthermore, you do not have the writing skill of a worthy journalist. Go back to college, and while you're at it, change majors.
Idiot.

He doesn't talk about those who are overweght due to ilness, only about those who are too lazy to do anything about it. And it's an epidemic in the States. His terminology is provocative, but, if you think about it - so true, so descriptive! Yours, on the other hand, is chosen to attack him personally, and is very offencive.
You sound very stressed. It also another cause of overeating and obesity. Try some yoga; you can do it on your own, without taking classes. And hope your Mom get better.
