Overweight Moms, Children Think They're Thinner Than They Really Are, Study Shows

Actually, to be honest, it's not so much that they make you look fat. You are fat.
Very few women can pull off polyester stretch pants with the word "delicious" emblazoned across the rear end, and girlfriend? You are not one of them.
Don't worry. It's a big club. With plenty of refreshments.
USA Today reports many a big mama and her horizontally challenged offspring are not as svelte as they think.
Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center in New York asked 111 women and 111 children questions about their age, income and body size, and also measured their height and weight. They were asked to identify their body shapes based on silhouettes representing underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity.
Researchers found:
• 66 percent of the mothers were overweight or obese.
• 39 percent of kids were too heavy.
• 82 percent of the mammoth mommies underestimated their weight when looking at the silhouettes; 42.5 percent of overweight women did the same. About 13 percent of normal-weight women thought of themselves as thinner than they were.
• 86 percent of the corpulent kiddies underestimated their weight, compared with 15 percent of normal-weight kids.
• 47.5 percents of moms with fat kids thought their children were at a healthy weight.
• 41 percent of the children thought their moms could lay off the donuts and lose weight.
Pediatrician Claire McCarthy of Children's Hospital Boston tells USA Today roughly half of her patients are fat.
"Parents come in and say that their child is too thin, but on the growth charts, he's a normal weight or even slightly overweight," she tells the newspaper. "There are so many overweight children out there that a normal-weight child looks thin. The norm has become overweight."
As America gets fatter, people could get a warped attitude toward their fattitude, lead researcher Nicole Dumas, an internal medicine resident at Columbia, tells USA Today.
"We're working on accruing a larger sample size to see if it applies to everyone," Dumas tells the newspaper. "The take-home message is that to address the obesity epidemic, we have to address body image misperception."

Also avoid certain foods that you can't digest such as wheat and white flour because it can build up in your colon. By the way you might want to find out if your depressed from eating wheat and white flour or have an allergy to it. I'm gluten intolerant myself and if I do wheat and white flour I get very bloated and also we need to be careful with vaccine's if your a parent with children because a lot of babies die in this world from strokes from the mercury that can cause a lot of problems like for my self I became a special need adult from vaccine's and have muscle decay and hearing impairment and now I have to get chiropractic treatments childhoodshots dot com

I know that you CAN hide behind the anonymity of your computer and spew venom, but should you? Maybe you should examine why you have just a hateful attitude towards others, and feel the need to demean them through such cowardly portals.

PLEASE be sensitive to the way children hear these messages; that they are not o.k. because of their weight. Teach other children to be kind and thoughtful to all of their peers. We have seen what bullying and nasty comments can do and you are much more than just what you weigh.

Attacking "fat" people is like the last acceptable form of discrimination. Oh no, you can't say any derogatory against blacks, asians, hispanics, gays, etc, because it's discrimination and you're a racist or a bigot. Well, why is it acceptable to attack the overweight, obese, or "fat" people. Yeah, I agree some people should stay away from certain article of clothing. But, hello! Isn't it our right...and the freedom to wear whatever the heck we want to wear. If you don't like it, don't look! And it's messed up how some butthead wrote fat kids under the photo of a little girl. So what if she's chunky, yes chunky, not fat. She's a kid for pete's sake. Grow up people.

NOBODY has the right, to tell someone that they shouldn't be able to wear WHATEVER they please. If you're not attracted to bigger women, than fine... move on with your life. How dare some of you insinuate that ALL fat/overweight people are smelly, etc. Being that the AVERAGE size now is size 14, nobody has the right to say anything. That would be like me saying black people are lazy, or mexicans are all on welfare, which is NOT true. Im sure some of you that are making comments on overweight people, have at LEAST one family member who is struggling with being overweight, how do you think your family member would feel if they heard some of the things you had to say about others? If that's really how you feel, why don't you grow some BALLS, walk up to them, and tell them what "fat slobs" they are. UNTIL then.... hide behind your computers, what a bunch of losers.

Unfortunately children are innocent victims. They rely on their parents to teach them good habbits. I have a 10 month old baby, he decides when he is full from eatting. He reads his body signals. He is in the 15% for weight. I don't force him to finish his food. So many people out there still believe chunky babies are healthy babies. It's sad to see fat babies and kids start out their lives so unhealthy.

joyceafrancis said...Having raised three children, only one of whom is "heavy," I can say that he exercises every day and has since he was a toddler -- he was a wrestler, football player, baseball player, and continues to this day coaching and working out. However, it has always been apparent to me that his appetite is over the wall and no amount of education or carping has done any good. He's solid, full of muscle, and in good health, but it is apparent he should lose at least 35 pounds. He eats a good breakfast and lunch (healthy) but once his day is done after exercising, he eats until he goes to bed. Obviously it is an emotional problem. Neither one of my other children have ever had an eating disorder or weight problem. They were raised by the same parent and had the same meals offered to them. Until he realizes he must eat less, there is nothing anyone can do. Perhaps I failed him by not taking him to a dietician whenhe was a young boy.

It's so funny and sad at the same time. I just love the women that say "but wheres the solution"?- hello-- do you really need someone to tell you to shower brush your teeth slap a little makeup on and comb your hair? What are you like 4? Also I think you can think on your own to take a walk and get some exercise. Stop trying to make everyone feel sorry for you like your a victim all the time. I'm sick of hearing excuses like "you just don't understand" or "you shouldn't be so mean" or my favorite " this is the size of most woman now of days". It seems like fat woman and men need to hear "hey you are fat get out and do something and put a carrot stick in your mouth instead of that hot dog" then maybe you will finally get it. HOPEFULLY. now a bunch of trolls with respond with "leave us alone, what makes you so perfect, blah blah" . Just go back to the beginning of the post and read again and again and maybe something will click!!

Tori said...I have Cerebral Palsy and am about 25 pounds overweight. I know that. I am doing crunches and push ups almost everyday to work on it, but I can't go walking yet because it's still cold and icy here. Even when I can walk, I can only walk a half a mile or so on my crutches before I have issues. I also have tyroid issues that are not very well controlled. Some people that are overweight have medical issues that cause it.

Apparently you are fat, smelly, lazy and disgusting and have no business even BEING (according to the author of this article and parentdish blog which is promoting this crap). I had a relative with no legs --she wasn't working out at the gym and wasn't a perfect size 00. She was bedridden. She had some nerve a=gaining weight and not being buff.
Maybe if all the thin people in the world died, fatter folk would have more room! THere's an IDEA! Hey thin people--you are aparently not enjoying yourselves since you spend your time griping about everyone elese's appearance. Your bitterness is making you all wrinkly and ugly (from scowling at the overweight). Just end it all since you are so piqued by what others do and don;t sem to have happy lives.

FP said...Tori, 25 pounds is something that many can deal with and certainly doesn't make you obese. Good luck losing that weight!
Now WUFs, you don't apparently qualify for the above note to Tori. You are mean and offensive and it unfortunately must go with the rest of your persona. You have called people names and been extremely ignorant in your comments just because they are NOT obese as you apparently are. It might be time for you to get off of the computer, do a review of what you should be eating (Google search) to get rid of the weight (and the nastiness) and spend about 30 minutes doing a little exercise each day. Maybe if you take the chip off your shoulders, you too can lose some weight. You might be a better person for it; you certainly can't be worse!
